cannons on the crowds. more than 400 people were injured in the weekend violence. our senior correspondent nicksh has the latest for us. nick, what is the latest there? >> reporter: as you said, over 400 injured. the lebanese red cross said that. the government came out and stamping their authorities bringing an end to the clashes between the police and frpropetr protesters. there is a sense of clean up and almost getting back to normal. there was a debate if they should call people back out in the streets. at the same time, 6:00 today. they called that protest off. there is social media backlash. the trash is just the tip of the iceberg. it is the dysfunction of government here and years of corruption and parliament unable to decide who they want to be president. and deciding to renew their own term because they could not pass election laws. a new sense of dysfunction in the elite and that is like electricity, water and trash collection. it became too much. they were met by a tough response. that marked a large number of people on the streets. a small minority clashed with protests which clash

cannons into the crowds. anti-government protests are at the heart of this dispute. nickoins me now live from central beirut. it is just past midnight there, nick. what are you seeing? >> reporter: as you join me we have just heard the rumble of what sounds like heavy armor being brought into the city center. i saw myself two vehicles that looked like they were carrying the military here. the significance of that is it corroborates some reports in the media that the lebanese army has moved into the city center to try to contain the situation. that is now six hours after this protest began. it began thousands strong, peaceful, minority at the front seemed more interested in clashing with police than many others did. it was pretty clear this was going to escalate. police fired water cannons and they got pelted back with rocks, bottles, whatever they could lay their hands on. protesters tried to get over the barricades and finally the police had enough and fired tear gas. it has pickkicked the protesterr back. then the question of what will bring this to an end. we are heari

cannons and tear gas on the crowd. demonstrators in the thousands calling the piles of refuse an example of government dysfunction. nick patton walsh is live for us. nick, this is an incredibly volatile-looking situation. >> reporter: the pictures you're seeing are live images of basically pretty much outside the white house, a comparable thing for lebanon, outside the prime minister's residence. there's been this clash unfolding for three to four hours. it began a long time ago but the seed of it was begun when the government failed to collect trash for well over two to three weeks. it piled up, it stank, it rotted and began #youstink on twitter. they brought out thousands of people today after violent reaction from police to another protest last night in which live ammunition was fired in the air. that got a lot of people angry here. now we're seeing on the streets down here a lot of tear gas being used. and the chants you may hear from the protesters is in arabic, which means revolution. they are wanting the prime minister to resign. he wants a cabinet meeting on thursday and the possibility that maybe they can get

cannons and tear gas on the crowds there. demonstrators calling the piles of refuse an example of government dysfunction. nick paton walsh is live for us in beirut. nick, have things calmed down? i know you said the piles of trash, that's really just the beginning of the problem that people are upset about. >> reporter: well, i mean have things calmed down? hard to tell more broadly. the police have taken the move now to head toward the remnants of the protesters who are behind me further down that road here and they fired a lot of tear gas at them. at one point charging towards them actually. i can see, i think it's police, now making another rush chasing protesters away from a side street too. they're very much on the advance using tear gas to assist that. how do we get here? lebanon has been a mess politically for decades many argue. the last month or so the dysfunction began to be visible on the streets. you could smell the rot at the heart of government because the government wasn't able to organize trash collection. it piled up and began to stink. i can stand on my balcony and smell trash wafting in. a

cannons into the crowd. a trash crisis was the catalyst for this anger. behind it all, though, is fury over government corruption and political paralysis. cnn correspondent nick paton walsh is live for us this evening in beirut, bob baer, also back with us for some analysis. nick to you first, the army has rolled in? >> the army has rolled in in pretty substantial numbers. we've seen a column of their army rolling past here where all the protests began earlier today. their presence seems to be in very substantial number, often providing security, but never in this kind of presence. that will tap down that sense of anarchy we've seen in the past seven hours or so. let's wind back to how we got here. why the center of this city, beirut, turned into street battles in just the last few hours. it started really with an inability of the government to collect trash. basic thing you expect the state to do. they couldn't for weeks. piled up in the streets stinking, catching fire, causing people to realize how dysfunctional the government is here. 50 months they've been unable to do something as simple as decide who the president is supposed to be. parliament elects hi
