petro persian co joining us from selenski za lection event in kiev his job your correspondent nick connelly nick thanks for joining us we have been hearing all about. this this these results what's the feeling where you are tell me a little bit about the atmosphere. it's incredibly atmosphere is buoyant i mean they were expecting this but to see that confirm the scale of the victory if these exit polls proved to be right in the first round they were very accurate almost three quarters of the votes even in regions that were expected to go fetch a pushing for over fifty percent of the voters seemingly voting for as alinsky this is someone who only announced his run for the presidency on new year's eve so in the space of few months he really has turned the political landscape on its head. can you give us the actual figures or do you not have the actual numbers at this point. so so far the polling stations are just close we just have those exit polls we expect to get more reliable numbers in the course of the night but a final count out will only be probably tomorrow tomorrow isn't it but as i said

nick connelly nick given how how big this victory is for selenski are you surprised at all by this margin by this result. is not just me that surprised lots of selenski supporters seem pretty surprised when it eight o'clock local time the ballot boxes were closed off and suddenly we had the first exit poll there was two or three minutes shouts of kind of excitement a real shock here at selenski selection party this is something that many people have called off in ukrainian politics especially if you consider that just a couple of months ago zelinsky wasn't even in the running here in the announce that he'd be running for president on new year's eve so this is really something that has showed that is shaken ukraine politics to its core and he really has pulled up through that not many people thought he could. how is the political world in ukraine reacting to that big victory. what we heard from solecki himself at the beginning he was very brief is that something that's been a characteristic of all his campaign a kind of reluctance to engage with journalists he just thanked his team and his family he came to the stage once more and again he was pretty if they sit when it came to talking about who he would make his advisors who would be in his government how he would make that work. ask a pitch for shake a well he very soon can conceded defeat i guess the polls also of such a did that the caption of the two candidates is so pronounced that there isn't much chance even if those polls are quite hundred percent accurate that gap can still be closed he we understand holds alecky and congratulations on his win let's have a look at what's actually pushing that say. he said to you next month i will leave my post as president of the country. this is what was decided by the majority of ukrainians faves. and i accept this decision because of his i will leave the office of the presidency which but i would like to emphasize i am not leaving politics. supports and go there saying that he does accept that decision let's go back though to selenski in a debate last week we heard him say that he would seek to quote break the system what exactly does that mean what can we expect from selenski now as president. will call this is about two things first it's about generational change so petro poroshenko and third place units in washington selection of figures that have been at the forefront of ukraine's politics for decades selenski someone who on the one hand is known to almost old ukrainians through his work in show business in act as a comedian who has no baggage of that kind who hasn't been involved in frontline politics or politics of any kind for that matter so he's promising at least basic and a generational restart and his major concern he says is corruption the thing he says is holding ukraine back on realizing on its immense potential this after all is ukraine's is europe's rather poorest country still and he says by fighting corruption bringing people even people with top level involved in politics to account for their corrupt dealings he can help release that you cannot potential and really help ukrainians decent living at home rather than being forced to leave the country as millions of ukrainians have been in recent years leaving the country in the hope of finding decent wages and the ability to provide for their families. what about internationally and in terms of geo political relationships but selenski stance on russia clearly a country that plays a big role in ukraine. and i think it would be wrong to cool to lead and openly pro russian candidates they would have any other candidates in this race who travel to moscow during the campaign that was something that was considered normal. so in the past before the war in basketball the next issue crimea but as we saw in the first round that doesn't pay off at the ballot box in today's ukraine that was something that didn't do them any favors selenski is certainly in no hurry to show himself as a friend of the kremlin on the one and the other hand he is culturally someone who speaks russian in his private life rather than ukrainian who mixes both languages in his public appearances that something goes down well in more russian speaking parts of this country it's observed europe while he says that personally he is in favor of closer integration and membership of nato in the e.u. but he will put this down to referendums allow the ukrainian public to decide on that the trouble is having more rather than the geopolitics is actually accusations that he's too close to his call a mostly an oligarch who owns the channel that made selenski famous that is a link that has been causing him considerable trouble in recent weeks and something that doesn't seem to be going anywhere away anytime soon. all right nick connelly reporting there in kiev from selenski headquarters thank you very much. turning now to our other top story in sri lanka where devastating wave of easter sunday bombings has killed at least two hundred seven people and wounded more than four hundred fifty or leaders of condemned the coordinated attacks that targeted buggery hotels and churches where worshipers had gathered for easter services police say thirty two foreign nationals are among the dead most of the eight bombings appear to have been suicide attacks the government is blaming religious extremists and made several arrests but no proof has claimed responsibility so far. just hours after the series of bomb attacks on churches and luxury hotels sri lankan security forces carry out a raid on a house in the capital colombo a further explosion rips through the building killing three police officers along with the police special task force the sri lankan military has been deployed in the search for the perpetrators of sund

nick connelly nick president bush and co is under threat of losing his job to a political unix periods a lot in near selenski where the opinion polls tellings. well the last poll we have is from the end of last week no more polling was allowed after that on the election rules and that doesn't look good for the incumbent he looks to be trailing a limousine lengthy by about two to one selenski all around seventy percent or shank around thirty percent that's basically the same pattern we saw from the first round so nothing much changing if anything zelinsky increasing his lead in the last few days before that last poll. this is been an election that is really taking everyone by surprise just a few months ago. he wasn't a little scene here in the announce his candidacy on new year's eve on live t.v. and now you see the poor the incumbent president doing his darndest to try and talk to people who maybe are disappointed with him who are frustrated about corruption the slow pace of reform and get them to pull back from the brink of the last moment and to go for him as a safe pair of hands because as as the polls have it and as the kind of feeling on the street here and here on this beautiful spring day seems suggest it's not working there's been some discussion about how the candidates have been light on the issues one of the candidates focused on in their election campaigns. so petra pushing his campaign has been all about positioning himself as the commander in chief of the army a father of the nation figure a kind of conservative campaign reminding people that he came to power in twenty fourteen when russia had just an excuse me and the separatist conflict in the east was just getting going basically telling people had it not been for me that conflict would have spread and you would have seen fighting and maybe even here in kiev so really pushing that national security agenda telling people that only he can stand up to russia whereas selenski has really gone for a bit more of a positive optimistic campaign talking about a change of generation the opportunity to fight corruption really shake politics up and also talking about people's incomes let's not forget ukrainians incomes have taken a real hitting and people still have less money at the end of the month than they did five years ago before the war so that is really something despite the war that is on everyone's minds and corruption fighting corruption as a way of helping people to get a better son a living is something that seems to be dominating people's agendas so let's he certainly has name recognition but it's because he was a comedian he's a political novice a neophyte what would his alleged he win mean for ukraine. well that's the million dollar question he's come in for a lot of flak for not speaking to the media very much choosing instead to talk direct to voters through social media through instagram in a way that he can control and avoid or what questions he has been a bit more of in the last few days and has presented his team. some of those people have government experience as a former finance minister there bringing in a bit of a bit of credibility in terms of the detail of policy but he also faces problems over his links to the owner of the channel that made him famous he's one of ukraine's richest men the former owner of the biggest bank in the country someone who's now living out of ukraine because he's in bad relations with petro poroshenko suggestion being that incidents he comes to power he will favor. he's business helping to return his assets that he's lost in the past few years that's aligned to petro poroshenko has been very aggressively pushing but it doesn't seem to be working people often give you the sense that they feel they have nothing more to lose and they're willing to take this risk and vote for someone with no experience that's. only in kiev thank you. two football in the bundesliga now biren kicked off their match nick connelly nick president poroshenko is under threat of losing his job to a politically an experience a load of mirrors the landscape what are the landscapes chances well they're looking very good at the polls last polls polls we had off from last week there's no polling allowed now in the run up to the election that gave selenski about twice as much support as incumbent petro poroshenko about seventy thirty and definitely speaking to people here where i am now in front of a polling station in a middle class suburb of kiev you really get the sense that there is a lot of frustration with the incumbent president people maybe not always saying that they want to vote for selenski specifically saying they need new faces they want something new and seemingly willing to take that risk take that jump to someone who doesn't have experience of politics one of the candidates focused on in their election campaigns. so petro poroshenko led a very defensive election campaign basically put trained himself as the commander in chief of the army the man who brought ukraine back from the brink back in twenty fourteen when that conflict with the sore about there in the report there and twenty. threaten to extend to the rest of the country saying that only he can stand up to russia and he was able to provide a slightly more positive picture portraying himself as the face of a new generation someone who'd shake up the corruption that has made this one of europe's poorest countries and saying basically trust me i don't have any experience but i can bring the people with the expertise in my team and only by really starting from scratch can we change this country that's his message and it's one that seems to be doing very well and sort of doing pretty well what does a lengthy mean for ukraine so this has been the consistent criticism of the lenski that he has been very light on the detail his critics say he's promising all things to all people to try and maximize his appeal but it doesn't seem to be doing him very much harm he has in recent days been speaking to the press more talking a bit more in detail on the big questions joining nato or the e.u. for instance he says he'll put it to the people let them decide in referendums and start with taking immunity away from members of parliament to try to fight corruption better but the experts that has been quoted expert criticism that it is all kind of fuzzy but this doesn't seem to be something that many ukrainians are too concerned about they seem so concerned about their economic position living standards are still low and now than they were before the war that they're willing to take that risk and to vote for someone who has no track record and hasn't even been in taking part in any elections before but he is a face that everyone knows from t.v. he's been all over ukraine show business for the last ten years so there is great familiar hour to you know what he does need to explain who he is and that seems to be really paying off in. following the ukrainian presidential elections for us thank you. several thousand people turned out for a new anti-government protest in the serbian capital belgrade on saturday they demand more democracy and media freedom in the country the fresh protests come just a day after president aleksander rule change held a mass rally in an apparent bed to counter months of street demonstrations against him. saturday after saturday tens of thousands have gathered in belgrade to demonstrate against president. critics accuse him of being corrupt authoritarian and gagging the media and the civil service there protesting under the motto one of five million a reference to a claim that footage once made insisting he would not respond to these accusations even if five million people showed up to protest on friday through to tell to rally for his serbian progressive party in the capital supporters came from all over serbia state media said that a hundred thousand joined the rally but it's unclear how many of them made the journey voluntarily reports like that of nineveh to love it are piling up the nurse said her superiors at work repeatedly pressured day of the year. at first glance woods looks just like any other place you pay to park your car it's fairly cheap and only charges seventy five cents an hour. but about this is a private parking lot so you have to pay for it. or start roche's up or i'd keep. this is also a private parking lot but it's free with god's blessing you can leave your car in the parking lot of the parish of st mary of wants to pray on camera even here in catholic poland. top should end up as a sacred truth that applies to everyone who parks here after all this parking lot belongs to us the church and the priest built it so everyone who parks here should come inside the church and pray properly invade. each need if someone refuses i say to them don't you even want to pray for your own parents but no one nick connelly nick thanks for joining us president poroshenko is under threat of losing his job to a politically inexperienced volodymyr zelinsky what are the opinion polls telling us at this hour. well the last opinion polls we have off from the last stand last week where there were no opinion polls allowed to be held the day before and on the day of the election but those do seem very decisively in favor of this insurgent candidate for the most alinsky putting him or over seventy percent on almost double as many votes as the incumbent petro poroshenko that looks to be a position and a very difficult to come back from for the sitting president petro poroshenko out on the streets of kiev today to turn out seems pretty big we were in the suburbs of kiev earlier on in the middle class district lots of support from zelinsky there here in downtown kiev a lot more sympathy for the incumbent people telling us that they think you know they have something to lose and don't want to risk putting someone without experience in the top job voting now taking off a bit most people seemingly having posted already in the early hours but polling stations will still be open for another four hours. what are the candidates focused on in their campaigns. petro poroshenko was very clear about his pitch he was selling himself as the commander in chief as the father of the nation as it were the man who stopped the conflict in the east of ukraine spreading to the rest of the country who pulled the country back from the brink back in twenty fourteen when as you remember in the space of months crimea had been annexed by russia the separatists had got going in the east of the country the country was virtually bankrupt so he selling that legacy is the person who can keep the country together now lots of his critics would say he hasn't done enough to make life easier for average ukrainian standards of living us to lower than they were before the war people's really incomes have really taken a hit and there hasn't been enough decisive action against corruption no significant convictions none of the big figures in prison and that's and it's alinsky is really been able to profit from someone who was known to everyone by being a star of t.v. from comedies from stand up but equally not having been part of a political elite that has been in charge of this country for the past decade so he's coming in as a fresh face as the face of a new generation you want to shake things up and to really challenge the status quo the question is will ukraine's take that leap are they willing to take that risk you mentioned zelinsky is a fresh face not only a fresh face but obviously a new a novice. what would designs when mean for ukraine. well that's the question he's coming for a lot of criticism that he's been very vague on the detail of his policy selling more of a hope and a vision rather than concrete policy suggestions in recent days he has been a bit more concrete and presented his future team including some experts a former finance minister to try and give himself a bit of credibility there but he's also coming in for a lot of criticism because of his links to the oligarch. this is someone who's living outside the country and is an enemy of the current president poroshenko suggestions there that if so let's give makes it to the presidency he'll be trying to favor the business interests of that's something that pushing through the current president is pushing as a line but seemingly it's not doing him much much harm if anything the poll ratings in the last days before this poll seemingly showing him increasing his lead over the incumbent and people time and time again when you speak them saying they're just tired of the rhetoric of war tired of low incomes and hoping for change feeling they don't have much to lose that's our nic connelly in kiev nick thanks so much. this easter christians around the world or attending church services in praying our next report comes from poland where one priest has found a novel way to encourage people to pray any day of the year. at first glance woods looks just like any other place you pay to park your car it's fairly cheap and only charges seventy five cents an hour. and this is a private parking lot so you have to pay for it. but first start roche's up or i'd keep. this is also a private parking lot but it's free with god's blessing you can leave your car in the parking lot of the parish of st mary of the perpetual help. yesterday but whenever i park here i never forget to pray the rosary prayer is part of our daily life so you can easily do ten how mary used to you going home yesterday it. was that you got. the priest does not charge money he requires you to pray in order to park here but parking your car long term comes with a warning the price goes up. in minutes and i charge ten hail marys

nick connelly nick president poroshenko is under threat of losing his job to a politically an experience a load of mirrors the landscape what are the landscapes chances. well there looking very good the polls last polls polls we had off from last week there's no polling allowed now in the run up to the election that gave selenski about twice as much support as income of petro poroshenko about seventy thirty and definitely speaking to people here where i am now in front of a polling station in a middle class suburb of kiev you really get the sense that there is a lot of frustration with the incumbent president people maybe not always saying that they want to vote for selenski specifically but saying they need new faces they want something new and seemingly willing to take that risk take that jump for someone who doesn't have experience of politics one of the candidates focused on in their election campaign so petro poroshenko led a very defensive election campaign basically put trained himself as the commander in chief of the army the man who brought ukraine back from the brink back in twenty fourteen when that conflict with a sore about there in the report there and twenty in the us threatened to extend to the rest of the country saying only he can stand up to russia and so let's he was able to provide a slightly more positive picture portraying himself as the face of a new generation someone who'd shake up the corruption that has made this one of europe's poorest countries and saying basically trust me i don't have any experience but i can bring the people with the expertise in my team and only by really starting from scratch can we change this country that's his message and it's one that seems to be doing very well and sort of doing pretty well what what does a lengthy when mean for ukraine. so this is been a consistent criticism of the lenski that he has been very light on the detail his critics say he's promising all things to all people to try and maximize his appeal but it doesn't seem to be doing him very much home he has in recent days been speaking to the press more talking a bit more in detail on the big questions joining nato the e.u. for instance he says he'll put it to the people let them decide in referendums and starts with taking immunity away from members of parliament to try to fight corruption better but the experts that has been quoted expert criticism that it is all kind of fuzzy but this doesn't seem to be something that many ukrainians are too concerned about they seem so concerned about their economic position living standards all still lower now than they were before the war that they're willing to take that risk and to vote for someone who has no track record and hasn't even been in taking part in any elections before but he is a face that everyone knows from t.v. he's been all over ukraine show business for the last ten years so there is great familiar out you know what he does need to explain who he is and that seems to be really paying off and nick calio following the ukrainian presidential elections for us in kiev thank you several thousand people turned out for a new anti-government protests in the serbian capital belgrade on saturday that a man wore a democracy and media freedom in the country a fresh protest i'm just a day after president aleksander voters held a mass rally in an apparent bet to counter months of street demonstrations against him. saturday after saturday tens of thousands have gathered in belgrade to demonstrate against president george h. critics accuse him of being corrupt authoritarian and gagging the media and the civil service there protesting under the motto one of five million of reference to a claim that footage was made insisting he would not respond to these accusations even if five million people showed up to protest. on friday footer told a rally for his serbian progressive party in the capital supporters came from all over serbia state media said that one hundred thousand joined the rally but it

nick connelly who's in the olympic stadium at the debates is just about to welcome nick i was it like. to feel well in a word noisy at the beginning it seemed like nothing really was going to be understood at least by us here in the stadium with especially pitch pushing those supporters who seem to be the majority if they doing their best to drown out the will of the residents if you had to say but eventually it did all we had. initially be worried that the two candidates would actually be on the same stage they would choose they just set up behind me but had to pushing their march over to the stage because let's be was that it warmed up and eventually it was pretty story going to head on head battle with the two candidates setting the questions to each other the journalists the moderates present basically didn't get involved and it was a blow for blow between the two over the now it's just past. having said that we've had so typical of the way face to face contact the last three weeks i think expectations it was going to be a bit higher than the south that actually delivered thad who do you think had the best of us and in front of us potus on crowd. i think both quavers play to their strengths the question is how big those are the audiences of those respective approaches amongst ukraine's forty million people so you definitely saw petro poroshenko up think his game coming out fighting really doing his best not just to show that initial shock that you really did see in his face in the first days after that first round elections where the scale of his defeats to so let's get really was quite striking is the let's go to the hand trying to get a count for shakos would like rhetoric being ironic being more relaxed making most of attack attempts to really appeal to a younger audience with a different kind of stylistics so. as for now the poll seems to suggest that it's really not within portion has reached the gap between the two is too big but portugal putting up a good fight and showing no sign of getting inside. the housing market where so let's figure out how the day with questions about his his inexperience and the danger his powerful backers. by. the but in terms of experience he makes no secret of fact that he is and you can the politics he says that he can stay in office for one period for five years and then leave. leading the way for new people in terms of his powerful back is the people who put him on t.v. he says there is no other option if you want to be on t.v. in ukraine the channels are all owned by oligarchs and one of those oligarchs he points out is that you're pushing to he does indeed own a popular t.v. channel so you came out fighting very much and said should there be peace to make you feel it would be the owner of that t.v. channel or which is it can make his career then he will face charges and will go to jail no special deals for friends no exceptions to the rules so that his line he seems to be to have basically made his peace with being accused of being a puppet of call them whiskey and they both play to their very different audiences i think there's not much in the way of a crossover now. that's for nick nick connelly and kim thank you. but learn a sport now that tennis rough and the dow has made it to the semifinals of the monte carlo masters by facing argentina's guido pella in straight sets however world number one novak djokovic won't be challenging for the title this time the two time champion crashed out of the tournament in the quarterfinals. danielle medvedev it was a day to remember the russian had lost all three of his previous matches against know that joke of it but in the monte carlo sun medvedev gave his more illustrious opponent the runaround this point helped him break djokovic she said for a second time. and claim it first said i he must have known it wouldn't be smooth sailing throughout the in the second set djokovic she's quality showed and the serve level discourse at one set age. was but that was as good as it got for the reigning champion of three of the four grand slams medvedev dominated the final set on match point he maneuvered joke of it around the court an

nick connelly is following this for us nick i mean when you look at your report you have to ask yourself why would i ever agree to the drug test or to do this debate in a stadium these are these are definitely things that zelinsky holmes so why did he agree to do this good evening brand well it seems that he's team decided that the risk of being seen to be cowardly to be pulling away from this challenge was just too big obviously stylistically this is difficult for him he all through the campaign is being selling himself as a safe pair of hands the commander in chief a serious. conventional politician who can stand up to russia and using any opportunity has to. say this is someone who's not serious about politics but given the extent of his loss i mean zelinsky picked up almost twice as many votes in the first round as did he surprised us all yesterday with his his agreement to this to this test and he's willing stood up this morning to give not only blood tests but also have another test to prove his health and his fitness for office to the ukraine nation i mean do we know how these images and the blood says how that's going down with ukrainians who will be voting in the run all. well this definitely has being the number one topic of discussion today it's been all over social media in ukraine people barely been speaking about anything else it's definite dividing people there's a real group people who feel this is not appropriate this is not what the president should be doing all those seemingly intrigued by the whole prospect i spoke to people on the streets let's have a look at what they have to say. never seen anything like this before so it's something new it's really cool to follow it's also. it's an issue this is a show it's meant to be a debate where people can see who has what it takes to lead ukraine into the european union. so. we can't wait. they've got popcorn for the debate i mean that speaks to the fact that he is a disrupter in this election and he's hoping to make gains by by disrupting the process the incumbent president. how is he dealing with all of this. well bred the thing is we're ten days away from this debate and we are still talking about the ins and outs of the debate where it will be who will be in charge who will be presenting rather than the issues not overtly shows that selenski has dictated the rules of the game and that's something that you can't be interested in as the incumbent does someone who is over the policy detail by dint of having been in office for the past five years he is really struggling here and he's being forced to leave his comfort zone that video we saw from your staving without a tie on trying to be a bit more informal it's still great it's a little awkward it's a long way for him to get to zelinsky his routine. he'd routine relaxation relaxed atmosphere in front of the camera so definitely zelinsky is doing all he can to make this about personalities about the details about kind of holding one's nerve rather than about the nitty gritty of how ukraine is going to be ruled the next you know an economy in the ukrainian capital of the night with the latest on what is definitely an interesting campaign to say the least nick thank you or to new zealand now we're in court has ordered the suspect in the christ church mosque shootings in which fifty people were killed to undergo a psychiatric evaluation the assessment will determine whether he is fit to face trial for mass murder. around twenty five relatives of victims and some survivors of the massacre travelled to the cool truman christ church. the accused twenty eight year old australian brenton tyrant appeared by video link he's being held in new zealand's only high security prison in oakland. he looks all right he doesn't he doesn't wear anything he looks very fit. and eventually i don't think so he. rules for evolution loss. the family the victim the family here a bit i want to go through that then i. can but i want to do it anymore the alleged shooter is facing fifty charges of murder and another thirty nine of attempted murder experts say the case is unprecedented in the country's history. as far as nature is concerned with saying nothing like this
