american astronaut nick hague was headed there in october, but a rocket booster malfunctioned minutesoff and his dream of traveling to space was grounded. as mark strassmann reported, hague will soon get another chance. how high are you at this point. >>> right at that edge of space, you know, 50 miles. >> reporter: this photo, taken from the international space station, captured how close astronaut nick hague got to his dream before gravity pulled him back. what goes through your mind when you look at that photo? >> life doesn't always work out the way you planned it. and, more often than not, what defines you is how you bounce back from that. >> reporter: 31 miles up, a faulty sensor had cost him his mission, but he was alive. you were supposed to go up for six months. you were back on earth in 20 minutes. >> yeah. >> reporter: what was that like? >> looking out the window and seeing space and seeing the curve of the earth, and just this split second of just utter disappointment about "it's not going to happen and we're coming home." >> reporter: his shot at space was also the dream

it was a tough week last week when we had a failed rocket launch and as you correctly noted, nick haguend alexi are home safe and we are very grateful for that. sir i am also grateful for your attention to the issue. your immediate care for the issue, clearly this is something that is important to you personally. and nasa recognizes that and for that, we are all very grateful. i will tell you this, while our astronaut and there cosmonaut are home safely, they are not happy. they want to be on the international space station and they cannot wait to go again. so we are grateful for their enthusiasm and nasa is regrouping, we are replanting and we are getting ready to go again. we have a number of russian so use rockets in the next month and a half and in december we anticipate putting our crew on a russian rocket launch to the international space station again. we have a really, really good idea of what the issue is. we are getting really close to understanding it even better so that we can confidently launch again. it is important to note that while this was a failed launch, it was proba
