we want to check the forecast now with meteorologist nick o'kelly. , nick. >> good sunday morning to you. this is meteorologist nick o'kelly and we start things off on this sunday morning a lot like what we saw yesterday and the day before. that meaning a lot of marine cloudiness. that marine layer is about 2,000 feet deep and we've got a strong onshore wind flow, thanks to a trough of low pressure that's been hanging out to our north for the last two or three weeks. temperatures have been below the average to be sure, but very comfortable inland. we have not seen that strong summer heat that's so common for this time of year. high temperatures will start to rebound as we go through time. in fact i think we're looking at some 90s in the seven-day forecast as you'll see. here's a wider perspective of the satellite and the radar picture. now, what we've seen is this trough across the west coast, pretty much throughout the last two weeks, maybe even a month. temperatures have been below the average. high pressure and the warmest temperatures remain down

meteorologist nick o'kelly who's in for rob mayeda this sgloerng good morning. this is meteorologist nick o'kelly. starting off with patchy fog and drizzle towards the coast. that's going to end by, let's say, 10:00 or 11:00 this morning but do watch out for the wet roadways. perhaps highway 1 wet a little early on this morning. the rest of us looking for abundant cloud cover. with the strong onshore wind flow, temperatures once again a bit below the average but very comfortable inland. highs approaching the lower 80s, mainly 60s to low and mid-70s right near the bay and hard pressed to get out of the low 60s if your headed toward the coast. not exactly the best beach weather. but we a looking for a shift in the weather pattern. it's going to take about 48 hours to arrive. thwe extended forecast does sho some changes. high pressure, it's been stationed across the desert southwest, finally lifting to the north and we've got a warming trend in your seven-day forecast. that's coming up. >> thank you, nick. >>> new this morning, we are following a deadlygin itan in

let's check in with nick o'kelly. i love the weather as well. >> no word on weather taste tips or coins. we all won out except right at the beaches where the marine layer hung tough, this view from oakland toward the bay bridge. san francisco, you can't quite see it in the distance. look at current temperatures. 93 in livermore. we did see the heat return. 89, concorde, 80 san jose, very comfortable near the bay and marine layer and afternoon sea breeze keeping things cool, 64 degrees. here has the top-side view, satellite picture and never really burn things off down the san mateo county coast, a few breaks in the overcast, the same story tomorrow, a repeat performance, warm inland, cool at the beaches, something you would expect this time of the year but there are changes this week and a definite cooldown. really not all that much going on, a high pressure ridge anchored over the desert southwest. no change there. another dip in the jetstream. we have seen a lot of these this summer. will anchor itself over the west

meteorologist nick o'kelly will have an update on the storm later on in the newscast. but first, nbc's steve handelsman has a look at all the damage. >> reporter: the danger that remains tonight from irene comes from the hurricane's huge rainfall. rivers like this in vermont are raging there is overflow from north carolina to new england. this was pennsylvania near philadelphia. >> this storm is transitioning into a flooding event. we're going to experience major flooding. >> reporter: in bayhead, new jersey, rising seawater filled the streets near nancy walton. >> we knew at 11:30, 12:00 we made a mistake by staying, but we couldn't go anywhere. we were stuck. >> reporter: new york city firefighters had to rescue more than 60 people, including three babies on staten island. >> when i looked out, my heart sank because all of the sudden the water was up to the level of the cars. >> reporter: despite water in some streets, 300,000 new yorkers were allowed back home. after the city's first ever evacuation of coastal neighborhoods. mayor michael bloomberg also closed the s

let's check in with nick o'kelly, check in on the weather. what's going on, nick? >>> we're talking about fairly quiet conditions around the bay area. e were concerned about somecc1: iels lated thundershowers. not going to show. the reason is, temperatures just didn't warm up enough.cc1: we couldn't get the instability going and temps once again well below the average. just 74 in san jose now. normally this time of year we'd be in the low 80s. 81 livermore, 69 in oakland, 62 in san francisco. we saw that strong sea breeze that's kept the marine air in the day.oughoutcc1: saw a burst of man soon moisture up the valley but didn't come into the bay area. we were left high and dry, okay with a lot of folks. we'll see low clouds tonight spreading inland. they already are in san francisco and across to oakland and emeryville. tomorrow, mostly sunny, summer like wenather with one exceptio. the temperatures are below average because of this trough of low pressure. it's not big, not strong but also not going anywhere. so it will keep us with that strong onshore flow all wee

meteorologist nick o'kelly will have more on that in a moment. first kerry sanders has this look back on the path of hurricane irene's destruction so far. >> reporter: hurricane irene made first landfall just south of the outer banks on north carolina's coast. winds in excess of 100 miles per hour ripped apart, unsecured siding. tilted electrical poles and church steeples. downed trees. an unconfirmed tornado is believed to have touched down in belhaven, damaging waterfront businesses. while the storm surge damaged the roadways, the waves hammered the atlantic beach pier. this is what the pier looked like before irene and now after. the final section is gone, washed out to sea in the early morning hours. north carolina state officials say early indications are damage is minimal. duncan reeds who rode the storm out with his 80-year-old parents said he is thankful eye clean had been a category 3 hurricane showed mercy when she made landfall here as barely a category 1. >> i just kind of battened down the hatches and put everything away that can blo

i'm meteorologist nick o'kelly. we are watching some thunderstorm activity this morning we thought might make it into the bay area. that did not happen. what we saw instead was a lot of low cloudiness this morning. it took forever for burn off and temperatures really suffered. way below the average for a lot of us today, just getting into the low to mid-70s around santa rosa. normally you'd be in the low to mid-80s. 77 in concord. normally you'd be up to 87 degrees. 79 for a high in san jose. 66 in san francisco. that worked out pretty well for the san francisco marathon. in terms of what's ahead, we had been watching that monsoon moisture, big thunderstorms across the southland lifting northward. in fact you may have felt a little bit of extra humidity in the atmosphere, but we didn't have enough instability to kick off those thundershowers around here, which was actually a pretty good thing because the hills are dry and fire danger would be an issue. thought goi not going to be looking at any thunderstorms going f
