let's bring in nick paton walsh.is something pushed by british and france as well, not necessarily what the u.s. wants here. but what kind of signal does this send to the assad regime? is it even effective? do we think they're going to start sending arms? >> reporter: well, the british and the french first seized upon this, the idea to hang out the threat of supplying arms to the rebels to make bashar al assad more serious about political negotiations. things have moved on since then. they did manage to get the agreement to expire. the real issue facing them now when the arms may start to flow. they've left two-month plus window now for further political talks, a peace solution, until the 1st of august when they'll address at eu level quite whether arms can be supplied, who to, military train, other ways of providing assistance. a move to try to suggest they're willing to up aid to the rebels. >> nick, of course the rebels are saying, that gives two more months for al assad to kill people. i spoke earlier on cnn inte

. >> nick paton walsh is in dagestan.t the kind of violence playing out in this particular area. it's the kind of thing that might have impacted the suspects, the boston bombing suspects, and what they were exposed to. >> well, today's blast which killed eight or even three if you listen to different reports, not much transparency when it comes to these things, today's blast was a particularly bad and big one. two devices hitting the federal bailiff service outside of the city. apparently people tried to demine the first one. it went off and then the police in the area were caught up in a second blast apparently left there for them. it's the worst i think that's hit there actually since may of last year. and kind of these little peeks of casualty tolls really highlight a longer slow burning war that's been going on here between the police and these radicalized militants, which often leads to attacks at checkpoints around here, but also many different special forces attacks against buildings where they think these militant

nick paton walsh live in nearby beirut. siles and any reaction to this deal from the u.s. or israel? >> well, certainly u.s. officials have been clear that the s-300 air defense system is very sophisticated, and could mount a serious threat in the unlikely future event that may amount to some sort of airborne intervention in syria or the region. i should point out what we know so far. we know that syrian state tv is saying the missiles are being supplied. we have russian state media suggesting that the supply of these missiles will, quote, stabilize syria. we don't know for a fact they'll be delivered. and there's been a gray area over the past few weeks as the u.s. put pressure on russia to suspend this particular delivery. but it is absolutely vital there, because it does seem in the eyes of pentagon officials to be a bit of a game changer when it comes to syria's ability to defend itself. israeli officials even saying that the power of some of these missiles could, in fact, lead them to be offensive, even against the main

let's bring in nick paton walsh, nick, what more do we know about this american woman?hat was she doing in syria? >> we don't know what she was doing there. we do know what syrian state tv say she was doing there. they released pictures, some of them gruesome, of her corpse, they say of a british man who they found alongside her. when they ambushed the volkswagen they were traveling in. they produced the driving license and u.s. passport of miss mansfield as well. it's unclear who these people and what they are doing there, but what is clear is saying they're part of the foreign-fueled insurgency they've been fighting. the government very much trying to play down the idea that they're facing domestic discontent in this past two years of conflict, suzanne. >> nick, changing gears slightly. of course we talked yesterday about bashar al assad going on television, the hezbollah television network, and talking about all kinds of issues. what was your take from that? what is he saying of particular note? >> well, the overall tone was fascinating because this was clearly an ad

nick paton walsh is joining us from beirut. nick, what do we know about senator mccain's trip to syria? >> reporter: it seems to be reasonably brief, crossing over from turkey heading it seems about a kilometer inside syria. i've been there myself, it's mostly refugees on the other side of the border and quite a distance until you get to the first major heavily bombarded city. he appears to have met the heads of the supreme military council, the governing body. they clearly spoke, had meetings with other activists from the other cities around syria, too. but one of the main ngos that took him in, the syrian emergency task force, declared that part of the purpose was to show it's possible to get inside syria, that it's not too dangerous, that it's not overrun by extremists. of course this visit putting clear pressure, though, on the obama administration, wolf. >> how significant is it for a major united states senator to show up with the rebels in syria? >> reporter: well, it gives a degree of credibility. it gives the idea that
