nick payton walsh and his team are on the ground in sao paolo for us, they're getting a haunting lookfight on the front lines. a disturbing jean, and hospitals and the brazilian president for whatever reason seems to continue to downplay this entire crisis. >> yeah, he used to call it a little flu, he's talked more about this being a war, but he's still pushing hydroxychloroqu e hydroxychloroquine, the drug the president of the united states is using despite studies that it may be harmful. the latest numbers put brazil with 347,000 cases, that makes it the second worst affected country in the world, vying with russia the last 24 hours, back and forth as they release numbers for top position. even the best equipped icu's, hospitals here are running out of beds. sao paolo, the biggest city and hottest spot for the coronavirus in brazil, the deathly quiet, no new patients arriving on ambulances, is not a good sign. in fact, it spells the worst. >>> and already this enormous icu and been tween the beds there is a sense of anxiety about what lies ahead. doctors here have heard the presiden

our nick payton walsh is in rio de janeiro for us. nick, what is the latest?reporter: 26,417 cases confirmed in just one day, anderson. that is a record for brazil. a startling number, frankly, if you just bear in mind that is not the entire picture here. many doctors we've spoken to essentially say you need three coronavirus symptoms to qualify for a test in brazil. so when you say the number 438,000 positive cases, in a population of 210 million, that possibly suggests maybe a lot happening in brazil that isn't part of that formal number. >> nick, you also traveled to the hardest-hit city there. what did you find? what has it been like there now? >> reporter: sao paulo, the biggest, wealthiest city, sanjay, wealth not protecting anybody from the spread of the disease in the post densely populated cities. sao paulo, one of the hospitals we went to -- to, one of the best, were already full. this was a week ago now. essentially, i think we're a week to a fortnight away from the peak of the virus hitting sao paulo. they are reporting approximately 15% of the con

let's bring in nick payton walsh.you got an inside look at the poorest areas being devastated by the virus. what did you find? >> it is extraordinary to just look at the numbers as they begin to grow here. here not even at the peak. doctors here wear face masks and there is a lockdown, they can the peak is still possibly two weeks away but in the poor, suburban areas, the sort of shantytowns, almost, where people live, there is little government assistance. people left, frankly, to look after themselves and doing the very best they can as this virus sweeps through their dense streets. brazil has always had the haves and the have notes, but in sao paolo, coronavirus has the poor of its favelas going in more than ever alone. we follow emergency workers through the dense streets that fuel the fire they're fighting. this is the place people don't want to live in, yet poverty means it's packed all the same. these densely packed alleyways, you can tell the real risk of a high infection rate. in these tiny rooms, a sickness
