let's go to cnn's nick robertson, who is joining us not far from gaza. nic, what more are we learning about this strike? >> reporter: well, the hospital is saying -- officials there are saying that 15 people were killed and 50 injured in this strike. and the international committee for the red cross say they are aware that the hospital was organizing a convoy of ambulances for a medical evacuation from the hospital in the north of gaza there to the south of gaza where the idf has said there is a safe, humanitarian zone. the road cross weren't involved with the convoy but aware that it was being established and it was leaving the hospital. what the idf say is look, we had intel agents that said there were hamas operatives and hamas weapons being smuggled out on those ambulances. they say that's why they targeted that particular convoy. so it was, again, intelligence leading to a specific targeted strike. but once again, as we have seen civilian casualties as a result. the total now in gaza, according to the hamas-led ministry of officials, there's more th

nick robertson is back with us. show us what you saw when the idf spokesperson showed you that first tunnel there? >> reporter: yeah, it was a tunnel that was in a hut, in a residential neighborhood. and the interesting thing about the tunnel was it had a carefully concealed lid, tiled floor and if you looked, you wouldn't know it was there. it was 20 meters deep and a big ladder and the cables running into it there the switchboard and communication switchboard above ran from a house close by that the spokesperson who was talking to there, you see in the pictures, you see was telling us it was a house of a hamas leader. so solar panels on the roof of the house, powering the tunnel network down below. and he told us they put a robot down the tunnel and it connected through in the direction of the nearby hospital. he said they hadn't proven the connection all the way. but that is what they were investigating. when we were there looking at it, jake. >> and you were reporting all of this just a couple of hundred feet aw

nick nic robertson on the scene. what do you see? lot of bombs coming in, a major development going on? >> reporter: wolf, significant development that began about five minutes ago. s a significant number of flares dropped over gaza. what are you looking at right now is looking into the urban areas in gaza. you're looking at rockets coming down as well into, falling from the sky there into gaza. these flares in the sky are illuminating the ground, because there are ground forces, idf ground forces, in gaza. the city of gaza city. surrounding it. now the idf says we've heard small arms fire -- -- the illumination on the edge of gaza city. i believe i just saw a rocket fly to the right -- the illumination on the edge of gaza city. a rocket coming out of gaza city. i see no irntdce interceptions hearing that. while this is going on here it's clear to me from where i stand right now hamas, one of the other groups is firing rockets out of gaza even while they run this, under heavy fire right now. i heard at least two intercessions from th

nic robertson is "outfront" in sderot, israel. >> and, nick, i know you were just hearing some loud explosions there, of course, in the early hours of tuesday morning where you are. what's going on? >> reporter: we're hearing fighter jets in the sky above us. we've seen flares dropped over gaza city. heavy explosions there. flares dropped in the sky behind us, some very heavy detonations and shaking this building. it's something that has been a persistent part of the military actually the past couple of weeks. the idf saying there was another couple of explosions. the idf saying that they've captured 50 hamas rockets, now taking control of a number of hamas rocket launch sites. some of them in children's play parks. and also that they've cut off the north from the south of gaza along the length of the gaza strip. they're operating a humanitarian corridor. the idf keeps it open to allow some hours of the day from civilians to move from the north to the south of gaza. but it's really what happens next around gaza city. we're hearing the explosions. but are the troops going in on the ground, and

nic robertson, we'll continue to check in with you live on the ground in sderot, thank you. >>> and as nick was menging, the situation hor the hospital has become dire. one said tanks are surrounding the medical center making it impossible for hundreds of people who are sheltering there to leave and to move. they rub out of medicine and water and now asking the red cross to help with the evacuations. cnn's nada bashir is live in jerusalem. what do we know about this particular medical center and who is still there? >> reporter: well, kaitlan, that appeal for support for the evacuation of patients and civilians came from the director of the hospital and the pediatric center in northern gaza. this is one of the only pediatric centers left functioning in northern gaza. and as we know, there are many patients here who cannot be evacuated including children reliant on life support and dialysis. and as we've heard, as you mentioned there, they have said they're being surrounded any by tanks, the world health organization has reported significant bombardment around this hospital complex. and there

robertson who is in sderot, israel, near the gaza border. that's one of the communities that hamas brutally invaded and attacked on october 7th. nick, walk us through what you're hearing and seeing on the ground there. >> reporter: just heard a large detonation behind us in the distance. i believe you can see there images from inside gaza, flares illuminating the sky. we're perhaps a little north of there, looking into gaza from further away. we were able to see about four or five flares hanging in the sky. we can see -- we were able to see those flares a short time ago from here. earlier on there were more flares over that same area, over the past couple nights in that part of gaza, we've been able to see flares and hear detonations and at times see some very, very heavy detonations, multiple detonations. right now i'm listening to a fighter plane in the sky above us. we know on the ground, in gaza city itself and surrounding it, the israel defense forces have been about and poised to go in on the ground. of course, this is dangerous territory for them because hamas for them sort of controls these streets, until now at least. they

nic robertson is at the camera position in sderot that has been trained on those images over gaza for the past several hours. so nick, do we know what we were looking at and what's been going on now on the ground? >> we believe were looking at beit anun being illuminated and military smoke screen on the ground to potentially give the idf a little bit of freedom of movement, or make their movement safer around this town. this town, bait anunn is in the most eastern corner of the gaza strip. it's about 2 1/2 miles from where we are. and a little bit later on after that attack, there was an attack on what appeared to be another town a little bit behind b beit anun. it's very hard to tell what was being achieved on the ground, but it certainly gave the impression that all the firepower that was being brought to all that illumination, all that smoke screen, that this was the focus of a very intense and concerted push by israeli forces tonight on these particular towns, anderson. >> what's the idf saying about its operations around gaza city? >> yeah, it's saying it's at the gates of gaza city, that it's going into gaza c
