cnn's nick valencia joins us now. nick, anybody who watched this video can see that at various points that were more than five officers at the scene wh. what do we know about this sixth officer's role? >> reporter: they told me the sixth officer has been relieved of duty, put on administrative leave. that officer identified as preston hemphill who's been with them since 2018. we have reached the attorney, the man who said he's representing mr. hemphill. he can confirm that that is his client. he also says that it was the body cam footage of mr. hemphill that we saw in video one. as per departmental regulations, officer hemphill activated his body cam. he was never present at the second scene. he is cooperating with officials in this investigation. a lot that we don't know, though, about this latest officer who has been relieved as a result of this is involvement in tyre nichols arrest, we don't know exactly what he did to catch the attention of the police department that put him on administrative leave. we're working o

cnn's nick valencia has been tracking this. , we already knew that the footage contradicted the memphis pd's first public statement about the arrest, but now there are more inconsistencies showing up in this initial report. i mean does this represent the makings of a potential coverup? >> well, we have reached out to the district attorney's other in shelby county to see if they're investigating this as being a filed false police report. we have not heard back. importantly, the bottom line of this these initial claims, the alleged claims made in the initial police report directly contradict what we all saw with our own eyes. most importantly, this report was written in the hours after the tyre nichols stop and most importantly it makes no mention of officers kicking or punching tyre nichols while he is on the ground. it actually alleges that nichols was the violent one. it says he was an aggravated assault suspect, that when officers approached him he was sweating profusely and irate and refusing to exit the vehicle, and then it

cnn's nick valencia has our report which contains graphic content some viewers might find disturbing. >> clearly there were other officers there. i'm curious as to why they have not been disciplined or suspended. just days after the release of the graphic video showing the brutal beating of tyre nichols by five memphis police officers all now charged with second degree murder, a sixth memphis cop has been relieved of duty. he's been identified as officer preston hemphill, also a member of the so-called scorpion unit now disbanded. major karen rudolph says he was relieved of duty with the other officers going on to say, remember, we said this investigation is on going. more information will be shared as it developments. the lawyer representing officer hemphill says his client was the third officer at the initial stop of nichols. video one is his body cam footage. asing that as per departmental regulations, officer hemphill activated his body cam. he was never present at the second scene. he's cooperating with officials in this investigation. the new development comes as questions conti

nick valencia reports. >> reporter: it was an adult rated, unabashed nonstop beating of this young boy is what we saw in that video. >> reporter: the mother of tyre nichols wailing in agony as the family attorneys described what they saw in the video of his arrest. on january 7th, nichols was pulled over by memphis police officers for suspected reckless driving. during the traffic stop, police say there were two separate confrontations between nichols and police as he was being taken into custody. nichols was transported by ambulance from the scene, in critical condition. he died in the hospital three days later. >> he was a human pinata for those police officers. >> we don't want next week to see another video of a black person losing their life because of a traffic violation. >> reporter: emerging from the meeting with memphis city officials, nichols' parents said their son was a good kid, who did not deserve what happened to him. police said nichols fled from them on foot. nichols' stepfather said after watching the video, he believes nichols fled because he was scared. >> our son r
