nick watt, cnn, ridgecrest, california. >> yeah, meteorologist karen maginnis is here now. talk about how severe this was and the number, the hundreds of aftershocks they're having to endure. can't imagine what's that like for these people. >> you know, it unnerves everybody. you know, when you've been through a tornado, you know that tornado is over. with these earthquakes and the aftershocks, they're not over. this could last for months. there was an earthquake in bakersfield back in the '50s. it wasn't even as significant as this one. and they had aftershocks for six months. and this is not going to be anything unusual for them. all right. let's go ahead and show you what's happened as far as where the area that was hit with this magnitude 6.4. initially it was a 6.6 magnitude, and now the depth of this is now about seven miles deep. all right. here is southern california. there is los angeles. and what are all these marks? i know it looks a little confusing, but each one of those marks represents where a fault line is. this is very seismically active, and the aftershock

nick watt, thank you so much.ppreciate that. >>> so as this storm approaches landfall, let's track exactly where it is, cnn's meteorologist allison chinchar is with me right now. give us an idea of how this thing is tracking. >> we just got the brand new update at the top of the hour. it is hurricane barry. winds sustained at 75 miles per hour. gusting to 90 miles per hour. it's still moving incredibly slow, however to the northwest at 6 miles per hour. that is the key all along. the slower the storm is, the longer it has to dump a tremendous amount of rain over this area. the hurricane hunters have been out. that's where we have been getting a lot of the recon from this storm, giving us that minute by minute data on this particular storm. that in part is what caused the hurricane center to upgrade this to a category one storm. the track is still expected to make land fall in the next few hours from now in the state of louisiana. from there, it will start to deteriorate and weaken. it also means it's going to cont

nick watt, cnn, lafayette, louisiana. >> reporter: the situation here in baton rouge does seem to beeriorating. the wind are kicking up, certainly gusting. we're here on the banks of the mississippi river. we're just outside the bell casino. we've seen whitecaps in the river which is already high from recent flooding. you can see the trees are blowing pretty strongly and also dipping into the water. and some of the water here is coming up on the edge of the steps, much closer to us. but this is a real concern. the main concern in baton rouge isn't so much the wind, even though it is strong. it's the water, because in 2016, just a few years ago, they had a pretty major depression that hung around and sat over this area and dropped about a foot and a half of rainwater. and those people are still struggling to get through that. i spoke to one woman who has been living in a fema trailer for three years, another woman who just moved back in her home and now has evacuated again because of this storm. right now we know the national guard is here. they have high water vehicles because they'r

first, let's go to the gulf coast, nick watt is in lafayette louisiana for us. nick, barry is getting stronger and closer tonight. what's the latest. >> wolf, we are about to get another update from the governor of louisiana, what we know already at this hour, is that they are already feeling the wind and rain of barry's outer bands down on the louisiana coast, and we know this storm is going to be big, slow moving and very very wet. barry is forecast to drop more than two feet of water on some parts of this state. >> tonight here in lafayette, last minute prep for barry's heavy rains. >> we're trying to be prepared. sandbagging their homes. >> everybody gets long. it's how we do it here in louisiana. everybody helps each other out. >> slow moving storm system now forecast to bring many hours and many inches of rain. 800,000 people now under a hurricane warning, along the low lying louisiana coastline from south of lafayette to new orleans. >> 48 hours, potential rainfall consistent rainfall over the city of new orleans. >> a sustained soaking for an already satu

nick watt jones me now from ridgecrest, california, the epicenter of thursday's earthquake. u still feeling those after shocks there? o . >> oh, yeah, we are jim. we did feel that. that was strong enough to knock our signal off the satellite. since then, my latest check, we've had 24 more after shocks since then. and listen, seismologists told us yesterday after that swarm of earthquakes and that 6.4, they said there will be many after shocks. they predicted 80% likelihood of a 5.0 or more and that has arrived already. they're still assessing the damage here. it is not too bad, a few cracks in roads, a few cracks in walls, some injuries, and not the big one by any stretch that anybody here in california is fearing. so those after shocks, jim, they will continue. and you know, a little bit of panic as well. about 20 million people they say felt the shaking from vegas all the way down to the coast and los angeles. you know, the lapd had to even put out a warning telling people unless you are injured do not call us. and everyone was a little bit upset that their early warning ap

cnn's nick watt joins us from baton rouge. moving storms, they sit there and dump a lot of water. that leads to continuing fears of water. are those dissipating or could it still happen? >> well, jim, there are still more than 10 million people under flash flood watches as barry moves at about the speed of a kid on a bicycle into arkansas right now but dragging rain bands behind. we're going to get some rain in baton rouge tomorrow. the worst has passed. as the local newspaper put it, close call, but those levies held in new orleans. on friday they were talking about maybe 30" of rain in places. now that's down to maybe 15 max from this storm system here in louisiana. but as you mentioned, 50,000 people still without power. those low-lying parishes south of new orleans got hit worse, they are still assessing the damage. but in new orleans, the levies held. in baton rouge, the rivers down about 6" i would say from overnight. barry did not hit as hard as feared. the reason for that is the storm surge wasn't as high as people exp

nick watt is live at naval base san diego where the deliberations are ongoing. nick?ing game. >> it certainly is. >> they came back this morning, the judge said they could stay late until 10:00 p.m. last night, no, we'd like to recess. they came back this morning, after an hour they asked to hear a recording of the first witness that was called by the prosecution. that guy was a seal officer, he testified you walked into the compound, saw eddie gallagher treating this detained wounded isis fighter. he went away, came back, and saw the isis fighter is dead. he saw eddie gallagher with a knife in his hand. he did not say he saw eddie gallagher stab the detainee. after the jury heard that piece of evidence they said, we heard enough. we're told that military juries generally reach a verdict quicker than it might be. it doesn't have to be unanimous. it has to be 5-2 to convict. this jury is taking their duty seriously. everyone wants this to be done by the july 4th holiday, the jury is taking their duty responsibly if gallagher is committed of that charge, that means life

kn nick watt was in that courtroom. and the skrir wjury was harsher?rter: another surprising twoois. this morni twist. the prosecutor only wanted his rank to be reduced. they did that and more. they also sentenced him to four months confinement which he won't have to serve because he's already been behind bars for longer than that in the pretrial period. they also want to dock his pay by $2697 a month for four months. the judge had earlier said that he would reduce to two months. so this is a far harsher sentence than anybody was expecting, than the prosecution was even asking for. and the jubilant tone after he was cleared of the six charges last night has dissipated somewhat. we were told that eddie gallagher would talk to the press today and he didn't. they walked straight past us and drove off. of course remember president trump has been involved in this case and he has hinted that he might have given a post-trial pardon. and that we assume is still on the table. >> so harsher there than anticipated. nick watt, thank you. so the flip side, this bre

let's get right out to cnn's nick watt, just outside new orleans in youngsville, louisiana. ght now one of two levees not reinforced after katrina is overtopping in several spots. nick, what is the concern from this levee? >> reporter: well, ana, that is down in plaquemines parish, 40 miles or so outside of new orleans, as you mentioned. the levee being overtopped. and we heard from the lieutenant governor who said that people in the southern part of that parish only have two or three hours to evacuate before highway 23 there is inundated and closed. he said they don't want to evacuate people along the tops of the levees, because there will be water on both sides and a car tipping off that could be fatal. now, as you mentioned, new orleans so far fine. the levees on the mississippi so far, fine. let's get an update on that from the governor of louisiana. >> we actually anticipated that the back levee would be overtopped, and so we are not surprised by what has happened. but what everyone should understand, no mississippi river levee has been overtopped, and not a single levee

first to cnn's nick watt. he is near the quake epicenter near ridge krefrcrest. what are you seeing there, nick? >> reporter: brianna, this is the town that bore the brunt of this quake. as you mentioned, the biggest earthquake to hit southern california in 20 years, but its location is key. it's out here in the mojave desert. it's not too close to los angeles. so this town, ridgecrest, bore the brunt. downed power lines, cracks in roads, some cracks in building, a couple of fires as you mention. the authorities here seem pretty confident that they are on top of it for now. this is the hospital behind me, probably the tallest building in this town. they did evacuate this hospital just to check for damage, and a few patients have been taken down to bakersfield. but frankly, brianna, right now the bigger issue is the threat of aftershocks, or possibly even a bigger quake than the 6.4 that was felt this morning. there have been dozens, more than 100 aftershocks since that quake this morning. some of them over 4.0, and we're told by seismologists at cal tech there is

i want to go to nick watt in san diego outside of the courthouse. our viewers what the jury decided. >> reporter: well, wolf, after about six hours of deliberation the jury found chief eddy gallagher not guilty on six counts, guilty only on one of the charges that he faced and that was posing with the corpse of the young isis detainee who was dead and who gallagher had been accused of murdering. he was cleared of that charge. now as the deliberation went on, it was beginning to look worse for eddie gallagher. we could see they were beginning to get tense on that side of the courtroom. but this morning the jury asked to hear the testimony of the first witness once again and that was all about that scene in which eddie gallagher was alleged to have stabbed that isis detainee. but not guilty of all of those six serious charges. only guilty of posing with the corpse and that -- that comes with a maximum sentence of four months behind bars. and eddie gallagher has already served more than that during pre-trial confinement. the official sentencing will be

nick watt has more on the case from san diego. >> it looks like navy s.e.a.l. eddie gallagher will be at home, a free man, for the fourth of july. he had been facing life behind bars. had he been convicted of premeditated murder. he was charged with stabbing to death an isis detainee in iraq in 2017 and posing with the corporatiocop corpse. he was using a rifle toll shoot a young girl and pressuring his fellow s.e.a.l.s to not turn him in and retaliating against those that did. the only charge he was found guilty on, was posing with that photo. the photo existed. everyone had seen it. there was no point in arguing against that. that photograph was really the positi prosecution's key piece of evidence. saying got this one with my hunting knife. got my knife skills on. there was no ferenorensic evide in this case. it was about navy s.e.a.l.s taking the respond stand and giving testimony. they say, we saw him do this and others saying he didn't do it at all. and in the end, the jury decided that eddie gallagher is not guilty. he is a free man. the sentencing is go

. >>> cnn's nick watt has just arrived on sea at ridgecrest. tell us what you're seeing, knick? >> well e. were outside the ridgecrest hospital which has been evacuated as think 'says structural damage. we are out in the desert. it's up in 90 degrees. that's an issue for patients. they are trying to get them in structures nearby. we have just driven through the town, went through a liquor store, they lost power a lot of bottles have fallen off the shelves. one patient is being brought in with what looks like a twisted ankle. we're told there are power lines down. the assessment of the damage is still going on, but so far just and the authorities say they are confident that they will get a handle on the situation, but of course the issue is the fear of thoughts aftershocks. an you've been reporting more than 80 since this hit this morning. we are told by seismologists at cal tex there's a percentage of an afterhost of 5.0 or more. as sara said ner has been mentioning before, we're about 1250 miles away from los angeles here, this town of about 30,000 people, lower buildings, no h

cnn's nick watt has the story. >> reporter: the biggest earthquake in southern california, but the location in the mohave desert. ridgecrest, this bother the brunt? also some minor injuries being treated here at the hospital. the hospital was evacuated to assess. there are some cracks in the road as well. what everybody is waiting for are the aftershocks. there were more than 30 aftershocks after that 6.4 hit and we are told by scientists that they extekt an 80% that there will be one today, tomorrow, next week. of course, that is what authorities are preparing for. also, this was felt from vegas to the coast. there was a bit of panic. why did our early warning app not trigger? well, it didn't trigger because the earthquake by the time it got to l.a. was only a 4.5 and that's under the threshold for that app to trigger. that has already been changed. so here in ridgecrest they are still waiting for the aftershocks. in southern california in general we're all still waiting for the big one. dave and michelle, back to you. >> nick, thanks. >>> breaking news overnight, three people stabbed, 16

cnn's nick watt has been following the story and outside the courthouse in san diego.ppens to gallagher now? is his career over? >> reporter: he's probably going to retire quite soon anyway. he's already been in the service nearly 20 years. listen, this was a man potentially looking at life behind bars but no more. he was found not guilty on six of the seven charges laid against him. as you mentioned, not guilty of stabbing a wounded isis detainee to death, not guilty of three different counts that involved allegations that he'd fired indiscriminately at civilians and also not guilty of pressuring his fellow s.e.a.l.s not to turn him in. he was only found guilty opposing the courts of that isis detainee, and that carries a maximum sentence of four months, and gallagher has already been detained for nine months during the pretrial period. so he will not see the inside of a jail cell again. it is unclear, though, he may get bussed down in rank which would affect his pay, which would affect his pension. we don't know that yet. we'll find that out soon. also gallagher has

that's where we find cnn's nick watt. did you just feel the aftershock, nick?> reporter: oh, we certainly did. listen, the seismologists told us it was coming, and they were right. at about seven minutes after 4:00 local time, that 5.4 aftershock hit, shook us around. was strong enough to knock our satellite signal off the bird. but i would doubt it was strong enough to cause any major damage. and since then, we've had another 11 aftershocks but lower in magnitude. now the big one so far the big one of this swarm was the 6.4 that hit yesterday at 10:33 in the morning. some power lines came down, gas lines were ruptured, a few fires in ridgecrest and minor injuries. we saw people here at the ridgecrest hospital being treated for sprained ankles. that kind of thing. no fatalities. but of course, this was felt by millions of people from las vegas all the way to the coast and in los angeles it was felt where, of course, millions of people live and where millions of people are waiting for the big one that we all expect, that we all fear will at some time hit souther

let's bring in nick watt outside of new orleans in youngsville, louisiana. , power is now out for 118,000 people statewide. what are you seeing and experiencing there? >> reporter: well, here in youngsville the power is still on, but we've heard from the mayor of morgan city, the power there completely out, and we also just heard that the water is beginning to lap across highway 23 that is down by the coast and they are trying to evacuate that parish, but that's going to be problematic if that road 23 is covered in water. there are now, i believe, partial evacuations in four parishes down towards the coast. here in youngsville, we are low lying and we are flood-prone and we have been getting bands of wind and rain coming through the past couple of hours and they are forecast to continue until maybe sundown on sunday. so the question is just how much water will barry drop in that time? now the governor of louisiana has made it clear that this is far from over. this is going to be one of those storms that we're going to feel for days. it is just a question of h
