. >>> another area where people have been picking through the rubble is shujayea and nicole johns johnson is there. >> reporter: we're in the central part of shujayea and it's utter deaf station in the neighborhood. whole houses have been pummeled to the ground by israeli air strikes as well as tank shelling from the eastern border with israel. you can see that there is nothing left of this neighborhood. all day people have been arriving here to take a look at what's left of their homes, if anything. they're going through the rubble, the concrete looking for anything that's worth salvaging. we've seeing people pick up mattress mattresses, canisters, in one kay we saw a man with his bicycle lifted on his shoulders as he tried to walk over the rubble to get out of shujayea. it's a really desperate situation here. the people of gaza are hoping that this 12-hour cease-fire will continue, that it will last for longer and give them more time to work out what they'll do next. almost everyone in shujayea has left this area, and they're now living with relatives or the united nations, but they don

john, even though as nicole pointed out six different schools have been attacked before today. >> nick, any indication or account that a permanent ceasefire and how would that take hold? >> yeah, the only sliver of good news in what has been basically two sides completely rejecting ceasefires is an israeli official saying the last couple of hours they might be only two days or three days away from completing their tunnel mission. of course that is not about diplomacy but that is the main israeli military objective here, to eliminate, to destroy those tunnels that go from gaza into israel. so much time has been spent on that and so many have died because of those tunnels. u.s. officials tell me that yes, that would likely mean that the israeli officials who have rejected attempts to get to a ceasefire at least resisted a ceasefire, you will see the israeli side much more willing to accept negotiations led by u.s. secretary of state john kerry, the question will be whether hamas and its intermediaries will accept assurances from the u.n. that the borders will remain open and the israeli

nicole says neither side want to respond to each other's ceasefire proposal. the original ceasefire, the 12 hours that was respected - that came from the international community. it came from secretary of state john kerry, and the secretary-general of the united nations ban ki-moon. behind the scenes the u.n. are working hard to get another ceasefire. robert, ban ki-moon's man, the special coordinator from the middle east peace process, he's been involved with both sides. i think there's a difficulty after the ceasefire has been broken. it will be easier to extend the ceasefire, the 12 hour cease fire. now it's broken, getting it back together is harder. there's hard liners in the israeli political and military establishment who want to escalate the military operation. they believe the fact that hamas is asking for a ceasefire shows that hamas has been wounded, and it's the time now to escalate and try to, as they would say, finish the job. what they mean by that, if you read the israeli media, is to dismantle the sophisticated tunnel and deal with the rockets coming from gaza. they want to remove the rocket launchers and the storage facilities and the production facilities. there's some talk of
