. >> let's go straight to nicole mitchell. merry christmas. >> back to you guys. the good news were airport delays yesterday, this morning we're not seeing anything. there's much fewer people traveling and weather has cleared in big hubs. as we continue, this is a look at storm damage for yesterday, where north kore north carolinae two reports of tornadoes one with winds at 150 miles per hour. this has been a potent system and it has crawled northward. the southeast clearing nicely and heavy rain -- it continues to clear out. still getting the rain, you'll have improving conditions. this is really a heavy rain, though, so you can see all the areas that we ever in the extreme northeast and parts of new england that are still under flood watches and a couple of isolated flood warnings this morning, because of that heavy rain. not as many people traveling and not as many people, it's critical if you don't get where you're going, like people trying to get to work sometimes. we won't have as many people stuck in this. we still have a corridor of heavy rain along the co

for that we bring in our meteorologist nicole mitchell. >> some of the heaviest rain is over. it will stick with us. in is north carolina, a little bit of snow. cool enough to support that. we continue through the day, it's a frontal boundary across the area. you see this, and it's going to continue to crawl the moisture up the coastline. but not as much as we saw a couple of days ago. we had improvement. it will stay so as we get into the next couple of days. a little cooler in a couple of places. into the south and north easement. new york at 39, running below average, helping to support the snow in the higher elevations. most a right. into the day tomorrow, this is a region and a country that we cap see more precipitation. light at this point. the other big player is the system moving into the north west, and that will spread across the country over the next couple of days. more on that, impact on holiday travel in a few minutes >>> we'll be weighing for -- waiting for that. now to the top story, the two police officers killed in the line of duty, john, what is going on at

let's bring in meteorologist nicole mitchell. good morning. >> good morning, happy friday to everyone. moving across the south, the west has gotten so much attention for the system and impact on the drought, but we have a little drought area that's been expanding, a severe drought from louisiana to the panhandle of florida. this has heavy rain developing along with it. this is very good news, although making the commute not as pleasant as it could be. as this continues, mostly today into tomorrow, we are looking at a widespread area that could see two to four inches. you can see it continue to move its way along and clear out pretty well already by tomorrow and definitely for the second half of the weekend. the core of this centered around louisiana and that would be that two to four inches, but beneficial, a lot of this area along the coastline into severe drought. temperatures today in this corridor, 50's and 60's, 30's as you head to the north. >> nicole, thank you very much. >> cuban american families finding themselves at ad

for more, let's bring in meteorologist nicole mitchell.ood morning. >> kind of a mixed bag. >> the entire state is in some sort of drought category, a lot of it under the exceptional, the highest category, so the rain is really needed. it was widespread through the course of the state, we were seeing scenes with rain but also scenes like this one, some land slides, mudslides and the cleanup because of all this. people ask me which part of california was getting hit. it was the whole state. look at that satellite. you can see the potent system out as it spiral out, bringing high winds, heavy precipitation. the northern portion still bringing heavy rain, even to southern california. a little bit of a break right now right in central california, but the whole state will get bans from time to time. it's not just the rain. moisture for the higher elevation, snow, that is mostly good news because it helps out the snow pack, but as this continues to add up today and into tomorrow, this is the next 48 hours, you can see anywhere along the coastlin

nicole mitchell has more on that. had just taken out my heavier jacket. >> in the northeast, you can keep it out. the midsection of the country, some temperatures, 20-25 degrees above average, so look at this warm core going all the way up to billings and almost 60 degrees, memphis and atlanta, we have the cooler area into the northeast. high pressure in place, that's a clockwise flow. on the eastern side, you get the air from canada. if you follow that flow around, that means on the western side, you get more of a southerly flow. that's really cranking up those temperatures. you head to the panhandle of nebraska, about 25, usually 40 this time of year, will be in the 60's today. the other thing the flow is doing is bringing extra moisture into the southern portion of the country, texas to nebraska, we've had spay areas of fog. watch for that, and also just, you can pick it up a little bit on the radar, a little spotty drizzle, texas, louisiana, nothing too bad. most of the country very, very quiet with that exception

. >> lets bring in nicole mitchell for the latest on that. >> numerous places reporting extra accidents that they were having to respond to, and imagine trying to even respond to this, if you're one of the responders, as we head to riverside, california, that is just east of the los angeles area. there you go, this was just one of five different vehicles in that 80-foot mud slide. that is in the mud. and this area that is just east of the los angeles in some places, rain was coming down at over an inch an hour. that was the problem, bringing all that into gear. they had to rescue 14 different people. that is one system. this is pulling out. we have the other one off the coastline. you can already see this funneling moisture into california. this will push northward. the coastline will get spotty rain, but most of this up into washington and oregon. some places in california are very happy to dry out. one system goes through and by the end of the weekend, another is on top. we will still see heavy rain northern parts of california over the next couple of days could see two or three-inche

first a look at the forecast with meteorologist nicole mitchell. >> good morning. for the east coast one last day of the warm air. this is rain versus snow for most of the region look how widespread it is tapping into the gulf area spreading through the region. we have had more on the way today. flooding from louisiana to portions of georgia. at least that participation is in effect so be aware of that. you can see the moisture spread to the north, it will be fighting moisture for points of the north-east. most of this is today and gone into tomorrow. the rest of the front pushing through, as it clears out in the mid west looking at the next snow, it's a couple of days out. that is this system that we are watching to the north-west. starting to see some of the snow piled up in the higher elevation, and this system while there is a front that is pushing through the east coast now, this is the one that will bring in the cold air after the next few days. one last day of warm stuff up the east coast. you can see already behind it, a lot of 20s billings minneapolis, let

. >> lets bring in meteorologist nicole mitchell for more on that. good morning. >> good morning. not a busy weather day, we've got little bits here and there and one of them, authorities felt this yesterday to the northeast, the rain came down and fell on the backside of approximate, northern side of michigan getting the snow. the problem right now is this is close enough to the coastline, still that spiraling bringing a little moisture in, that what is coming off the coast is warmer air now over the colder air, so that gives us a set up where you could have rain coming down through that warmer layer, freezing in the colder layer before it hits the ground and so some areas of freezing precipitation would be the concern, places like new hampshire and northern parts of maine cold enough that we could get four to six inks of snow in a few of those areas. most of the region continues to dry out during the course of the day today. you get on the backside of this, we have temperatures in the 30's. right next to the coastline, the cold air funnels in tomorrow, so enjoy one more warm day

for more, let's bring in meteorologist nicole mitchell. good morning. >> good morning, a little earlier this morning, we mentioned the pineapple express. this moisture, you can pick out the brighter greens are more moisture, the tap goes all the way back to hawaii and funneling the moisture in, california getting it now. yesterday, you can pick this out on the satellite, too, all the moisture coming into the area, yesterday it was more into the northwest, places like washington, now the heavier bands shifted into northern california and tomorrow southern california will get a bit more of this. in the meantime, high winds and when you combine high winds and rain, that can be a power outage nightmare, because the soil system, the trees are able to topple over once wet and you have to wind. the higher elevations, the pinks, that is heavy snow. here's the moisture as it spills in. northern part of california looks like they will get the most widespread areas, a half, a foot, some places six to eight-inches, as you get towards the mountainous t

nicole mitchell looks at the weather foreaft. >> a couple of big systems. the one moving through the south caused a little flash flooding in places like houston. as you understand, houston is the example of a concrete jungle with not a lot of paper for drainage. underpasses - easy to get it built up. for the day the area of moisture has moved along, you can see it more to the south-east. places like georgia, south carolina, higher elevations. speaking of snow, 42% across the country now if you look at the white christmas possibility yip. through the south, more of this spread as the low pressure stays off the coast line. more pressure, once the main batch moves off, a little less. some of that into the day. other places that for sunday, a lot get the jumpstart. we see moisture to the mid west. we have a widespread system in the west coast, including heavy snow, higher elevation, one, two, three feet possible as we get through the next couple of days. more on that and the christmas forecast in a little bit. >> looking forward to that. president obama called

nicole mitchell is back with that. >> good morning. we have the broader system moving now into the midwest. if you look southward, you can start to see a little bit of a flow, a little bit more cloud cover, so today, more into tomorrow is when this builds up. over the next couple of days, you could have widespread areas, louisiana into mississippi, for example, widespread two to four-inch, but isolated amounts sticks to eight inches. we already have flash flood watches, that means the potential in effect. this really doesn't start until tomorrow when the rain gets going. a wet saturday, lingering into sunday, as well. this is also in the core of it, because of the heat. you can see that where the red is, that's warmer temperatures, some places into the northeast as much as 20 degrees above average, but because this is a warm system still on this side of it, just some isolated chances for stronger storms. you can definitely see the blues on the backside, that is that next weather system, the current one and being rein ford by the next o

nicole mitchell joins us now with an analysis of the year's tropical activity. good morning. >> i can almost just say it was quiet, back to you, but we'll get more in department than that. this was a pretty calm season, this was the original names and we only made it animes i eight n to man in a before moving along. the storms that were out there did become intense, about 75% versus usually that being 50%. the other thing noteworthy with all of that is only one glanced by the united states, hitting you the outer banks of north carolina, so we didn't feel a lot of impacts of those storms. the eastern pacific was more active, they had 22 storms, some moved to the united states. >> i remember a couple of those in hawaii. i think you just jinxed us for the next hurricane season. >> that's not until next year, so we've got a while. >> sending astronauts to mars is the stuff of science fiction but soon could become a reality. >> it won't be easy. >> in the first space race, landing a man on the moon was a goal, fulfilled in july of 1969 by kneel armstrong. >> that's o

. >> let's find out the latest on the west coast rains, as always we go to nicole mitchell. still not a drought buster yet. >> meteorologist: no, the california drought is so long-term for years. it will eroad a little bit, but this will not turn it around. these are images out of san francisco all the way down to san diego. north and south we've been seeing these problems. more rain is on the way depending on where you are. some of the totals yesterday we started to wind down southward and definitely central. places like sacramento. this is just 24 hours from now. but through the course of the day it was 2.2, record rain, and more is on the way. especially in to tomorrow. the one system is clearing out, giving a little bit of a break today, but you can see another one tomorrow. as we get through the next couple of days we're going to see northern parts of california, and northwest get that next system that starts to move in. >> nicole, thank you very much. >> well at least one person was indicted in the wake of the eric garner choking death. >> he said that is total bull. i

nicole mitchell is back with more on that. actually, more rain. >> we just had a big storm that covered most of california. this is starting more into the northwest. you can watch one band go through. this is the developing system. watch that start are to wrap up and how widespread that cloud field is. that means a lot of available moisture with it employee that is going to get worse. those are high winds warnings. moisture moving into california, higher elevation snow, we had blizzard warningings in effect for that, because that will drive that snow. here's the initial banding moving more into california, northern parts later today, southern parts by friday. the heaviest amounts of rain will be in the northern portions of california, six to eight inches possible over the next couple days. flash flood concerns will definitely be a problem. >> ok, thank you. >> now that that report on that c.i.a. interrogation is out, will anyone be held accountable for misconduct? what it means for the agency and the country going forward. >>

. >> nicole mitchell is here, good morning, the storm now moving east. >> a lot of this has moved out, but there's still a lot of lingering problems on the roads. these are images out of south dakota, near interstate 90 were five or six inches of snow. the snowplows are out this morning because some of that started as ice, so the roads are pretty slick especially south dike into minnesota. we still have the winter weather advisories as far as parts of michigan with this system moving on. here's where that is now, moving into a warmer area, so more of this will be rain as it moves along. this is the same storm that extended to the south with severe weather a couple of days ago, as this moved along. as this continues, should be rain showers southward. the bulk is on the northern side, more rain for the great lakes and more into this afternoon, we'll see rain moving into the northeast, and that lingers overnight with a little bit of lingering stuff for tomorrow. most people, it will be rain now. >> pushing east, nicole, thank you very much. >> we'll focus on the man behind the deadly hos

. >> nicole mitchell, good morning, what storms are we facing today? >> yesterday, we talked about the risk of for severe weather which we saw. this is a very warm system for the most part, so this could be a huge snowstorm if it was colder, but it's been more of a storm with severe weather and rain associated with it. here's where that system is right now, and the core of the rain still into the east. the storms, the severe stuff from yesterday, all these pings indicate a weather report, almost 70 of them. the biggest threat was wind, but we did have 14 reports of tornadoes as all of this moves through and even still this morning, we're looking at that risk. the areas in red are still under a tornado watch. that doesn't mean anything imminent, just means the atmosphere is ripe for it. that goes into this afternoon. you see the greens, that is widespread, because the heavy rain we've gotten flooding across the area. so now for today, there's still a lesser risk than yesterday, what we call a marginal risk but really through to corridor, we could still
