fox weather's nicole valdez joins us live from palm springs here with an update on the current condition is likely just a glimpse of some of the intense flooding that the palm springs and really coachella valley area experienced really sunday afternoon into the overnight hours. let me step out of the way to give you a much better view of what's left after what was tropical storm hillary dumped inches of rain on the coachella valley. a bone dry area. what you're looking at is a bridge that actually moves several feet over the wash beneath it. but you'll notice that at one point the water so high up, it was likely a rushing river moving all of this mud and debris over the road. and just beneath it, if you can see that wash is still flowing pretty strong with those currents from that mountain runoff. this is really just one of dozens of roads that remain closed today just impassable because of either debris and mud like you see here, or still intense water flow. we know in those overnight hours there were at least a handful of rescues. the california national guard, part of the several team

check in with nicole valdez. e is in tampa where we saw that bridge start to get a little flooded by storm surge. is the storm surge impacting you where you are, nicole? >> it absolutely is. bayshore boulevard. an area that is very low lying even after a few inches of rain. what you are looking at right now is unreal image of the really majority of bayshore boulevard now underwater and you're looking at very intense waves that are being pushed on to the shore here now reaching the median of the roadway here as these very strong wind gusts push all of that water from the bay over that bayer. you are noticing these crashing waves breaking over there and essentially heading right into the area. police now have this area blocked off. it has been under water for the last several hours. but, the intensity and the pace of the water that's been moving over here has been incredible to witness. every few minutes or so it's another couple inches higher and we are having to move further and further inland to stay safe because

fox weather nicole valdez is live in palm springs how things are shaping up there. what are the conditions where you are? >> sandra, the mess you see behind me, one example of how intense of flooding we got here across the coachella valley. this bridge moves over one of the many washes that tends to fill up when you have even a half inch of rain. you look at it now, it's clear it was once a raging river. you can tell just how high the water got at one point during the most intense portion of what was tropical storm hilary sunday afternoon into the evening hours, one of the many reasons why city officials went and gone ahead and shut down so many of these major roads trying to keep drivers from getting swept away in those rushing waters. we'll show you some video of what we are seeing today, other roads still seeing as some significant strong currents moving through, so we have a lot of roads that are still shut down today despite most of the rain having moved out of the southern california area. but one area that is going to continue to cause some major problems is

nicole valdez joins us in california with more. how are things looking there? >> neil, the mess you see behind me is an example of how intense that flash flooding was across the coachella valley. you're looking at a mess of tree limbs and caked-on mud, this is one of dozens across the palm strings area that are still shut down because of what you're about to see. some roads still have running water over them. just so much rain, torrential rain fall. all of the washes getting filled with the water and all the run-off moving downstream. you'll notice the mess of debris and mudslides reported. we know a handful of people had to be rest used after getting swept away from some flood waters. one of the major roads closed, i-10 at cathedral city. a massive traffic jam there. we know some of those rescues were down by the california national guard who was prepared to respond to the potential of that catastrophic flooding. some did not expect the wind damage. we saw one home crashed by a falling tree. >> by the grace of god, could have happened to any one of us. it's so

. >> steve: nicole valdez joins us from cathedral city with the very latest. >> steve, brian, ainsley, good morning to you all. saladly you are looking at a very messy situation here. in fact, nearly 50 people had to be rescued from their homes after being trapped by look at this inches of mud. you will notice the road behind me still closed. there is even cars still stuck in it back there if you can make that out. let me point out really why it took a forklift, a front loadser to get those people out of their homes, i mean, take a look at how thick of a mess we have got here. it's going to take a long time to clean up. show you video of that rescue effort. and we know it's not just happening here in the coachella valley. san bernardino county officials are still searching for one woman reported missing and still trying to get to several others that are still stranded in their homes it. san all-out effort here to start that clean-up process. meanwhile, other big news, the i 10 finally back open in both directions. of course it's going to be slow moving as the

nicole valdez is in tampa. what are you seeing this morning? >> dana and bret, incredible scene along tampa bay as the storm surge continues to pick up and the rain falls here. you are looking at three feet or so of water that has been pushed in from tampa bay as these incredibly strong wind gusts continue to pound the tampa bay area. this is not a coast or clear water beach. this is not p st. peter beach but this is tampa bay area. bay shore boulevard, a low lying area that tends to flood but this is unlike anything even police officers who worked in the city for more than 20 years tell me they've ever seen. what you are noticing are waves that are breaking up against the barrier there and pushing over and crashing over with such power. it is so dangerous, meanwhile as people wake up this morning they are coming out to try to see just how deep this goes. what this person is doing here is so dangerous, so ill advised. police officers will likely stop him in a few moments. meanwhile across the state of florida more than 200,000 people are withou

bob we'll check back in in a minute but i want to check in with our team, nicole valdez live from the tampa convention center as floridians brace for idalia's land fall tomorrow. nicole, what's the latest there. >> well, jane, all the rain bob talked about is now moving over the tampa bay area. we're just along the river walk here so you're league over at the bay. this is an area where the storm surge threat is really top of mind. i will point out not only the rain that we're seeing, but just how strong the wind gusts are slowly becoming. take a look at the palm trees. you'll start to see really the way that they're swaying and the strength here is becoming visible. that is the key here. as i move over towards the bay area, i want to point out that while we haven't started to see the real storm surge just yet we are already seeing a good amount of water pull off as we approach really the edge of the river walk and that's just because of all the rain we've had over the last few hours as it continues to fall so this rain continues to build we'll already have an inch orb two of water on
