we nearly went through, when i was on your show and other about the nidal hasan court marsh am, and he'sn death row, sentenced to death. now you look at this case, he took his own the life, we want to look at what has taken place, he was an iraq war veteran. he was on the base with fellow troops at the time. we don't know what the issue was. the general was clear we have not ruled out terrorism. it doesn't seem likely. he had only reported two fort hood in february. i think that's critical, because he probably had the problems with post-traumatic stress disorder prior to arriving and they are evaluating that now. a couple of months. i think that goes to show how important it is to get the people appropriate treatment. >> we heard from chuck hagel, he gave a statement from hawaii, and referenced the navy yard shooting. a review of that took place. a defense secretary said when we had the tragedies, something is not working. what is your response to that. >> the secretary is correct. we are having to evaluate how this happened. i look at it in what jeff cornerwas saying. some of this is go

the 2009 mass shooting by major nidal hasan is still a fresh memory to those who lived through it. 13eople died, 32 were wounded. another instance of a soldier turning on his fellow soldiers, hasan was tried, convicted and is awaiting execution. a chilling fact that we've just learned. lopez and hasan bought the guns that they used this their killing sprees at the same gun store, guns galore near killeen, texas. my next guest was one of hasan's victims. former army staff sergeant alonzo lunsford is joining me now. mr. lunsford, you heard me make reference to the death sentence hasan was given. is that ever going to get carried out? >> i personally don't think that they're going to put him to death. no, i don't think it's going to be carried out. >> why not and do you think he should be put to death? >> well, it's not going to be carried out because he's a paraplegic one. two, because if you look at the time span that has occurred with the trial, and how things are being done right now, hasan is an embarrassment to our military. he's an embarrassment to our country. and throughout the

hood was shaken by another shooting rampage, this time by nidal hasan, who killed 13 people. lopez shows no links to terrorism, but they're still struggling for a motive between yesterday's attack. charles hadlock has been reporting. what can you tell us about ivan lopez and actually how he got that gun on to the base? >> reporter: well, he bought the gun several weeks ago. lopez had only been living in the killeen area the last three months after he was transferred here. he bought a gun recently. we confirmed that with the gun store owner today, that he purchased the gun, which is not illegal. he passed all the background checks. and guns are not illegal to take on to ft. hood. however, the owners must register them with the post and that did not happen in this case nor in the case of nidal hasan, who also bought his gun from the same store here in killeen back in 2009 before that rampage. the family lives in an apartment complex not far from the post here. we sent a crew over there today. they found what we believe to believe the spouse of the soldier at that apartment. she

. >> now, wednesday's shooting at fort hood brought back some painful memories of nidal hasan's 2009 rampage at that base. he killed 13 people, wounded dozens more. hasan was convicted last year in a u.s. military court and was sentenced to death, he wanted that. he had admitted targeting soldiers who were about to be deployed to afghanistan. ben corps ban is the mayor of the nearby town of killeen, texas. i had a chance to speak with him just a short time ago. go back when you first heard about yet another shooting at fort hood. what was your first reaction? >> it was just like a kick in the gut. it was -- it made me sad, it made me angry, it made me want to do something to help. our city was offered immediately all the assistance we could in terms of ambulances, police, our investigative resources and -- but it just didn't feel like -- it felt like you wanted to do more. those are real professionals out there in fort hood and they know how to deal with these situations. i know what it's like to be at war for a year and that's what they do and they -- they need our moral support, th

these were the same individuals that engage nidal hasan, the army major in 2009 in that shootout and finally resulted in his arrest. they will be the first responders as well as first aid people. the first thing is obviously trying to care for those that are wounded and injured to include as initially reported at least one suspect or one shooter. with the possibility that a second shooter is still out they are going to be tactical teams pouring on that base. we are talking tens of thousands of acres and thousands of people on that base at any one time, military and civilian. so it's going to be a real challenge trying to get people to shelter in place and trying to find the one more potential shooter and find out who he or she is and get them in custody, too. so there are a lot of things going on simultaneously. one of the things they will do is set up a chand post quickly where every agency who is contributing people to care for the wounded and try to hunt to see if there are more shooters. that post will be put together very fast to make sure we don't have a redundancy, people doin
