niemann marcus. in the height of the holiday shopping season, they say that hackers got into their programming system, and started grabbing information. how many customers? we don't know. and jennifer is watching it for us today. and so for those who use the niemann marcus card, what do you say to them? sgel w it >> well, it is difficult to know how concerned people should be, because we don't know how many numbers have been taken, and with target, the investigation is farther along and we have the new information that 70 million people had other information taken aside are from the credit card numbers like their name and phone number and e-mail address and mailing address, and we will find out what happened with niemann marcus, and the days to come. it happened in mid--december when niemann marcus learned about a possible security breach, and that is when they informed the police, and they started to work with the secret servi service, and the forensic team, and it took until december 31st for them

let's talk about niemann marcus.ey said they were alerted to in mid-december. it took until january 1st for a forensic team to determine that there was fraud at the department store. they are working with the secret service now with forensic team. they seem to be uncovered more information and because they know they are a victim of this cyber security fraud, that means that customers are also victims in this case. so far they don't know how widespread it is. the other unknown is what was the timeframe this happened. niemann marcus is saying that they will contact those people who they believe their credit cards have already had fraudulent charges. they issued a statement saying we have taken steps to further enhance information security. that is essential right now given that target has had this breach and niemann marcus is the latest one. >> what more can can you tell us about what banks and credit card companies are doing? my bank is the one that told me don't worry. we're monitoring everything. we'll let you know

we've got target, we are also adding niemann marcus to the list. the u.s.trialized countries when it comes to credit card security. do you think these incidents are going to now push us into the 21st century? >> yeah. we hope so. but you're absolutely spot-on there. when it comes to security and retailers in the united states, you know, not to be offensive, but they are very antiquateded when it comes to security and cyber security. instead of spending a lot of their money, capital expenditures, on security and beefing that up, a lot of these retailers end up spending that money online, you know, to beef up sales online or maybe beef up sales in stores. so as we see these numbers come out, and i can guarantee you, more retailers are probably going to come out with more statistics about how they may have gotten hacked or, you know, down the line this may be an issue. you're going to see a lot more retailers spend that money to try to beef up that security. >> i'm curious about the impact on target. i mean, these kinds of things can further erode the trust of

now niemann marcus. it's a major security breach that they learned about before christmas. they say they have been working to shore up security and not exactly sure how many customers need to be worried. jennifer merrily is following this for us. what kind of information might be compromised? >> we know credit card information was compromised. the unknowns is how many numbers and the timeframe from when the information was stolen. the target investigation is farther along so we have learned more. originally it was 40 million that had numbers taken. now there's an additional 70 million that they are talking about. those numbers could cross over a little bit, but have had more information taken. personal mfgs, names, mailing addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. i suspect in the days to come, we'll learn more about what was taken through that security breach. here's what we do know. in mid-december, the company was contacted about a possible security breach. it it took until january 1st to determine that that breach did happen and that customers' information was take

that means if target or niemann marcus realizes they have been hacked and realize it was a certain piece used to penetrate their systems, why not share that information with other retailers? if your goal is to protect the consumers, you have to share that information with other retailers so they can get a head start in protecting their systems, as well. i also did speak to a professional hacker about the importance of security at the point of sale systems. take a listen. >> what they need to do is, they need to focus on hardening their point of sale systems. and this is what's called end point security. and so this includes anti virus and other technological measures to make sure that hackers can't get in, they can't stay in, and they can't remotely access computers. >> reporter: and he also mentioned that there should be -- retailers should have a completely separate network to handle credit card systems that isn't connected to the internet. that means that if it is connected to the internet, it makes it easier for hackers to gain access, to get in there, to play around, and to basicall
