we all support a healthy, vibrant nightlife.ut we also support a safe nightlife that complements our neighborhoods and is not in competition with our neighborhoods. >> what are your thoughts on the city's economic development? what would you like to change about the approach to developing the economy? >> as a city, i do not think we have been good at creating jobs and economic development. there are things we can do to make life easier for businesses. businesses are the lifeblood of our economy. over the past few years, i have helped to eliminate dozens of fees that have been nickeling our small businesses to death. i have been pushing for more stimulus from city contracts. in the past, those would be awarded mostly to non-san francisco businesses. san francisco needs to do a better job of cultivating business innovation. we need to be the city that competes with silicon valley to attract clean tech, biotech companies. we can do a better job of nurturing creative industries. we need to create a better economy for our local artis

there are very few people who are more pro entertainment and more prone nightlife and i am. i have for years been fighting for our street fairs, when the city was threatening to fee them death. i came out strong against sfpd's proposed security policies about scanning people's ideas and videotaping them -- id's and video taping them. i asked for a study of our nightlife industry to show how heavily it contributes to our economic vibrancy. i also understand the critical importance of balance and never heard representation on the independent commission. this commission has to have strong representation on the entertainment commission and throughout the city, or it will not be effective. i am supporting d. gill sperlein. i have known him for three years. i will not repeat what he is said about his neighborhood work. he also is not just a neighborhood person. he is someone who deeply understands the importance of entertainment and nightlife in the city. i would never, ever support anyone for this commission who i thought for a second was anti entertainment. i think gil will be a

for those of us who care deeply about making our neighborhoods and nightlife and a life as well as vibrant as possible, this is an important step that sends a loud message that we are committed to allowing music and entertainment in our neighborhoods and not requiring that mom or pop cafe or small restaurant will have to go through the conditional use process and place of entertainment process. the other processes that are so daunting to anyone who does not have deep pockets and maybe a year or two to spend waiting. this is very important. i just want to note two things -- one is i -- if i could wave my magic wand and just control everything, which i know i cannot -- supervisor mirkarimi: but you are trying. [laughter] supervisor wiener: i try really hard. i have a 50/50 success rate. i would love to see the western soma included. i did not like the idea of exempting neighborhoods and including all these opt outs. if we have a good city-wide policy, it should be city-wide, unless there is an extraordinarily good reason for a sending an area, which i not believe has been shown here. from wh
