i think that the question for nikki haley and the problem for nikki haley, of course, is you're looking forward. people are already projecting on to her what, is she going to be in 2012? what is she going to be in 2011? is she going to be the face of the republican party? we've already heard her mention could she be a vice presidential pick? will she be the keynote speaker at the 2012 republican convention. she has to be very careful, take it one step at a time and not look like she's already going for the next big job and focus on what she needs to focus on, which is the state of south carolina. >> woodruff: adolphus belk, we are watching here the thread of the story that has to do with rejecting anybody connected to washington, anybody connected in a couple of these instances in the haley contest, she was running against a congressman who had voted for the bank bailout. and has happened nay couple of other races around the country. to what extent do you feel in south carolina the role of the tea party movement? >> south carolina is a small state benefit 4.5 million people.Ñ- nd so in

haley and also what he views as nikki haley's weakness is heading into the general election. host: the analysis for the general election. guest: this is a republican state, a republican year. at this point i would have to say that this is a likely republican hold. host: there was also an interesting house race in south carolina. the fourth kundra -- congressional district, a challenge from the right, tea party organization, that he was not conservative enough. guest: he made it into a runoff but trailed behind his republican challenger, the prosecutor from spartanburg. trailed him by i think 25 points. he still trailed by double- digit. so he heads into the runoff i think as the decided underdog. inglis had frankly, over the past six terms, a relatively conservative record but not conservative enough for tea party activists, gowdy, and clearly a lot of the voters in the district. a lot focused on a couple of key issues. he voted for the tarp bill. he had said over the past several years that global warming was a real and that it was caused by humans. he voted against presiden

nikki haley just barely missed getting 50%. she's got a runoff, but she's now considered to be the favorite. what's the lesson here? >> i wish-- well, one is , can you actually run a gubernatorial race where a candidate agrees to take a lie detector test? that, to me, was one of my favorite parts here. i think the lesson is this is a great case where the anti-establishment candidate was able to still keep that mantle even as she was being attacked. in fact, the more she was attacked, the more she grew in stature because what i think she was able to tap into was a frustration along south carolina voters that they'd become something of a laughing stock after the mark sanford debacle, et cetera, that they wanted to be proud of the person they elected and this looked like it was sort of a smear campaign. i think what-- the straw that broke the camel's back was the racial epithet made by a republican state senator about her on the radio and i think that is is the issue where the voters say we don't want to continue to be on comedy c
