just nikki haley has so far. joining me now, political columnist matt tyree. you heard about the division within the tea party. is this a real reflection of what we're seeing just across the state? >> well, it is. it is. south carolina is a little bit different than certainly what we have seen in new hampshire and iowa. it is really three countries as i say. you have the northwestern part of the state, very evangelical and then the center part is business-like. and then the southern and southeastern part around charlotte there is retired military and retirees from other places around the country. you don't have just evangelicals controlling politics in south carolina. it is more of a melting pot, more conservative than many republican states, but more symbolic of most of the red states that will go through in the next few weeks. >> evangelicals make up 40% of the electorate there in south carolina. and does that mean that, you know, regardless of where it is that evangelicals may be determining who wins in south carolina? >> for example, let's look at john mcc

he does have the support of nikki haley, but as you've been discussing, nikki haley is not a popular figure at all. jim demint, as ed schultz was pointing out, his comments favoring mitt romney, not an endorsement, but certainly a broad hint. that would be very helpful, because of jim demint being mr. conservative in south carolina. interestingly, romney split the conservative vote, the exit polls tell us, here in new hampshire with rick santorum, but, again, new hampshire conservatives are a very different breed of cat than south carolina conservatives. so mitt romney goes south with a big head of steam. there's no discounting the fact that he won iowa, he won new hampshire. we can say it's by four points more than he won it last time. we can say that he still is, you know, not dominant in not building much of a broader base, but at the same time, he is really consolidating a very strong hold on the nomination. it's going to be very hard to stop him, unless the opposition, the un-romneys, get together. and so far, as you've seen, everyone says they've got a ticket to ride out of her
