ambassador nikki haley and her counterpart from japan and south korea held a news briefing. we will hear first from the president of the security council. this is 20 minutes. >> good morning, everybody. in my capacity as president of the security council would like to brief you on what has been a productive meeting of the security council on the nonproliferation and the dprk based on a briefing with the secretariat. we underlined the unity of the security council on a number of issues. we strongly condemned the most recent ballistic missile launches by the dprk. these activities contribute to the dprk development of nuclear weapon developed in systems and decrease the tension in the region and beyond and increase the risk of regional arms race. members of the security council called upon all members to implement fully the mission imposed by the security council particularly the comprehensive sanctions regime. we all express our commitment to a peaceful diplomatic and political solution to the situation and we welcome efforts by members of the security council and other membe

nikki haley spoke with other u.n. members opposed to the conference to prohibit nuclear weapons. here is that conference from new york. ms. haley: happy monday. we have a lot of people piling in. come on in close, love each other. first of all, thank you very much for being here. just tod to be here have our voices heard. the first thing i want to say is you know me as the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. first and foremost, i am a mother, i am a wife, i am a daughter. i always think of my family first, as everyone of the people behind me do, as well. then we look at our position. what are we supposed to do in our jobs? our job is to protect the people in our country, keep them safe, keep the peace and do it in a .ay that brings no harm every one of the people behind me, that is our number one goal. that is the goal of our country. so now, suddenly the general assembly wants to have a hearing to ban nuclear weapons. as a mom, as a daughter, there is nothing i want more for my family than a world with no nuclear weapons. but we have to be realistic. is there anyone that believes that n

and nikki haley later confirmed -- by the way she has been spectacular so far on a number of issues where she's -- as tom said it's not enough for the u.n. ambassador or secretary of defense to always clarify things. the president needs to worry about it as well. but her comment that we still of course support a two state solution is helpful and to me reassuring. on the broad question you raised i'm going to make a comment that may or may not speak to it. it's a tying together of all the different situations where -- we're discussing today. but yes the united states has a lot of challenges. china rising, other countries creating infrastructure, you know, better bases, china expanding the access. you know, of all the countries in the world i would prefer our problems over anybody else's. if you think about the way we look at the world today, we still have that $600 billion military budget. we're worried up here about whether it's enough. thank god we can have that conversation when we have a resource base that allows us to have that. that's about 35% of world total military spending but it
