nikki haley talked about her parents building a business. rick santorum talked about the immigrant grandfather who came, and the father who worked his way up. chris christie, ann romney talked about her father. so what it is is this nostalgia, right, this was this experience of american social mobility that is now gone. when chris christie says this line, which i thought was the most interesting, we are the great-grandchildren of men and women who broke their backs in the name of ingenuity. who was in that "we"? we are the great grandchildren. it's not people who came in this generation or the generation before. that's a very circumscribed set of people to whom he is talking, a set of people who feel america is not theirs anymore, who have the nostalgia of mobility in the past, that i will say objectively the case, no longer a part of american life right now. social mobility has actually decline. they're speaking to it in this very conservative way, but they are addressing something very real about the way people feel about where the country

talking about a number of the females highlighted at the rnc this week, various governors like nikki haleyuzanna martinez and condoleezza rice, somebody he often turns to for foreign policy advice. you could see it was a very concerted effort to talk about the woman in the gop, how they are well represented by his account and also how he would want to have them as part of his administration. he talked about those he did appoint when he was governor and how he felt that was very important. so there was obviously a very definite plan there to connect with women tonight. you noted this was a wide ranging speech. he talked about policy quite a bit towards the end. some of his biggest lines when he talked about opposing the environmental protection agency, his plan for energy product and also about going after the president's healthcare law pledging that he will repeal it in full if he is elected president. so weaving in the person pall stories, the outrage -- personal stories, the outrage to women and focus on policy that he knew would connect him with this audience tonight. tonight. >> shanno

nikki haley. i mentioned a story about one of the veterans who plans to speak this week at the republican convention, and that is senator john mccain. the story and "usa today" says -- he also plans to campaign enthusiastically this fall for mitt romney. the story says -- an independent from louisiana, good morning. caller: good morning, c-span. i am a combat veteran also and i would just like to remind all of us veterans -- i cannot speak for all of us, but i was unable to receive my benefits until obama came into office. i first applied for them during bush could go second term and was denied twice. just in case you veterans who are thinking about doing something that is not in your best interest, just remind you who took care of you when the chips were down. also, i would like to know why don't people ever call -- people say they would like to see ann romney speak. to me, she looks like the angry white woman. no one can sit down and have a decent conversation with her without her getting upset.
