miami >> in south carolina, governor nikki haley has ordered evacuations from charleston and beaufort. this is interstate 26 heading out of charleston, westbound lanes are packed at this hour and people are driving on that coast. for more, lets turn to nbc mariana, tell us the latest? >> reporter: well, kate, the latest is what you can see behind me of people evacuating charleston and south carolinas and low country. you can soo e the traffic behind me and people are heading west trying to get out as fast as possible. that historic lane reversal that we have been telling you about. we are going to see here to my right hand side of those cars starting to go westbound for the first time ever. that's set to take place any second now and actually it went into effect at 3:00 p.m. i have here james law, james is a spokesperson of the department of transportation here in south carolina. mr. law, when are we going to start seeing these cars going west for the first time to help folks evacuating. >> we should see traffic in both westbound lanes. >> how much will that help people trying to get out and evacuate with their families >> the amount of vehicles and

nikki haley is giving a press conference and update on the storm. >> we want them to evacuate as soon as possible due to storm surges. we'll probably stop the lane reversal tomorrow on i-because the storm is starting to move in faster. we need to reposition our men and women on the ground so they are safe. we need to reposition the equipment to get ready for post storm. so you will see a stop, tomorrow if you want to drive 2 east or west you can. but we are hoping that everybody is headed this way. in terms of the ease of that lane reversal. you only have until tomorrow to use that. everybody has made record time, everybody has been pleased with the lane reversal. please take advantage of the fact that it's there now. we can't promise what you will have after we go forward. as of 3:00 p.m. today, we had 280,000 people who have evacuated. that is up from 175,000 this morning. we appreciate the south carolinaans who are listening to the guidance we are giving and being careful in terms of that. we hope to see stronger numbers. but we are at a $80,000 number right now. we'll be closing our high-level bridges once we hit the 40-mile-an-hour winds. t

nikki haley said about 175,000 people evacuated. she said that was not enough. they need at least 200,000 more people to evacuate from the overall general charleston area and they've opened up the lanes26, they've closed the eastbound lanes and opened it all up for westbound traffic to get out. that's gone very well. another situation are the bridges, there are a lot of bridges that connect these islands back to charleston and the bridges, some of them are low, the roads are low to the water and they could get flooding. if you're on an island like this you could get cut offn't if there's the kind of flooding they expect and these islands may lose power so if you're stuck with no power, no way to get off the island, you are in for tough going, bridges here, a lot of hi span bridges, 65 feet and higher connect these islands to charleston and that's a concern, too. a local emergency official told me when the winds get to 40 miles an hour and above the bridges automatically close, they're too dangerous. that could be a factor, too. people are being urged to get out while you can. they're worried about not enough people getting out of here. >> don't let that window close brian todd in fol

is all, all lanes on both sides of i-26 are going to be taking people out of charleston and into the western we vons of south carolina. they don't want people sticking around. governor nikki haley saying she wants people to leave because if they stay they put first responders at risk and so they don't want to take chances there. we know the air force is moving out some of their planes, moving out some of their people. as we stand here we see planes taking off. court has been shut down. they want people to leave. lots of colleges shut down as well because right here on the water in charleston it's a wide open space for the hurricane to come in. it could be very dangerous so they're asking people to not play meteorologist, to not stay here and try to figure out which path the hurricane is going to take. get your things, get your loved ones and leave and come 3:00 eastern time all of these lanes in both directions will help people do just that. >> no playing meteorologist. let's go to the real one. jennifer gray watching this thing from the cnn weathercenter. here's what i want to know. florida. do we know what part of florida could be hit first? >> we don't. and that's the
