obviously governor nikki haley already started that process, so i don't know if he gets to the finishwhy would he not run and raise money off the rubes that's raising money from? >> right, but if he runs, do you really think he doesn't get the nomination? today he would. there's no doubt today he would get it. do you think in 2024 he wouldn't get it or he'd pull out and say all right, i'm not going to run? >> i think it could get interrupted by the potential criminal investigations that are going on and the potential indictments, so if he runs and there are no indictments and i think he has a clear path to that nomination, and that's why senator mcconnell said of course i'm going to support him, which is even more levels of hypocrisy, but yes, he runs, he wins the nomination. there is risk here, though, because of his potential tax fraud case and other cases, even the d.c. case related to the insurrection is a potential speed bump to him getting that nomination. >> certainly party leadership would have to think long and hard about it. at this point in time, they're divided over trump.

so florida senator marco rubio would be a good example of that. south carolina governor nikkily criticized the president in the face of politico and he didn't quite like it, so a lot of candidates have been thinking to mar-a-lago, she wanted to go and he told her no but we put her in the trump lite category, right in between. now, she wasn't invited to cpac, by the way. marco rubio was. in the trump zero lane, it's a pretty small lane. one of the consultants we talked to said not much a lane as much as shouldery gravel on the side of the road that could tumble over, that was be larry hogan and if mitt romney decided to run, then ben sasse. pretty small lane and almost every republican we speak to and anyone who has been following politics would say that the chance of there being a never trump or a trump zero candidate as the republican nominee assuming trump doesn't run at all would be pretty slim. >> i would mention that, he has the if trump runs, he's most likely to win. but i do wonder, what is the smartest path for republicans? not just to win their own party's nomination,

but i think nikki haley, she wants one foot in the trump camp and one foot out. and it's hard to do both. and so war as we're calling it is just brewing up. there are factions developing who want a clean break from trump and trumpism. and she can defend the policies all she wants. but maybe she likes the protectionism. maybe she likes all the ag subsidies. maybe she likes the trampling of congress's article 1 authorities but a lot of us didn't agree with those policies. i think she's got a lot of explaining to do from my perspective. >> it's interesting abby because it seems like there was this moment right after the -- you know, the attack that a number of people were kind of seeing which way the wind was blowing. you have lindsey graham suddenly announcing that he was done with trump and sorry for the way it ended but he just can't do it anymore. and then you know, that certainly -- that was then and lindsey graham is now saying that trump's more important than ever and he wants the whole trump family involved in politics. >> yeah. i mean, the only thing i can gather from the behavior of both

nikki haley? i mean, they -- their futures are now so tied to the whims of president trump. >> a lot of people i'm will be dangled out there as red meat for the base. i would imagine for the next two to three years. and i expect that's what we will hear from the former president sunday when he speaks to cpac. and i agree with s.e. on a lot of the points about cpac. the founding principles of the group is about conservativism. the constitution. limited government and fiscal responsibility. and that is what got them going. but over the years, it has become a lot more about bedazzled jackets and men in their patriotic costumes. but the important thing to keep in mind, these are solid republicans. this is the big, huge part of the republican base now president trump's base, and they do have an important role moving forward in terms of keeping republicans on board and keeping people motivated. one of the things i remember from cpac, i got a huge poster of ronald reagan. i have it on my office, in here on my wall, and he was a big factor in cpac. i wish we could get back to more of that. because ronald

nikki haley. but you would probably find very few of them willing to say so on the record and by name. and that's because donald trump remains the dominant force in the republican party. he has widespread support among republican voters. according to virtually any poll and survey. the question, however, will be what kind of role will trump have going forward? he's been canceled effectively on social media. he's lost that platform and that ability to speak out hour-by-hour and inject himself into the news cycle. he has told advisors he's determined to play kind of a king maker role in the next election cycle in the 2022 midterms. he of course has talked and mused about maybe running for president again in 2024. although many people around him have told me they think that's very unlikely. but nonetheless, he could be a big force. he could also just disappear and you could see the republican party rebuild in his wake. and there's going to be real competition among haili and many others, dozens of other leaders around the country, governors, senators, members of congress, even mayors, who
