this brings us back to why did nimitz not cancel peleliu. the late and much missed colonel joseph alexander, an marine officer and distinguished historian, i think has provided by far the most and best in-depth analysis of what transpired at this point. by far, the most important reason why halsey's message did not result in the cancellation of the operation is that the support force that basically provided the bombardment and other naval assets to support the amphibious force going to peleliu had already been off peleliu for a day and a half. they had already conducted bombing, bombardment, and other preliminary operations. if nimitz were to order the invasion canceled at that point, it would provide the japanese with a huge propaganda bonanza that they could claim they had actually driven off an american invasion in the pacific. would be, have the effect of fortifying the morale of japanese forces that would not be desirable. it would also be politically embarrassing to president roosevelt, who had embarked in his fourth campaign for presi

time across the span looks pretty good with 15 minutes from 880 two the 101. 880, also known as the nimitz freeway, traffic off to great start with great speed moving nicely. out of oakland to the maccarthur maze, no delays. southbound 880 looks great from oakland all the way into san jose with no delays to report. if you take 101 along the peninsula and you have an early flight at sfo, you're good to go. the marin county commute looks good with southbound 101 drive not bad out of novato. keep in mind we have closures in effect on highway 37 westbound. it looks like we are loaded up with business as usual through the altamont pass with brake lights out of tracy. at mountain view it bogs down and stays busy up to north flynn road. you're good to go a few get past the passed at the dublin interchange and 680. traffic is clear and does san francisco. 280 two a great start into san mateo and redwood city. we have wants accident at north 280 off to the shoulder. >>> a new fitness trend is sweeping the world, one piece of trash set a timethe plogging and we explain what that is. >> reporter: it

we start with a live look at the nimitz freeway, that a stru especially past the coliseum. it will slow you down if you're trying to head towards the san mateo bridge. i'm going to show you 880. south of there we have a trouble spot, also. that will slow you down, a broken down vehicle also stuck in lanes making matters worse around winston avenue. in the south bay we have some flooding to report, so that will affect your drive as well, southbound 280 a little slow, northbound 87 connector over to southbound 280. that's where you'll find the right lane blocked because of flooding. you can see a lot of red. we're seeing the bulk of delays on the southbound side of 101 out of mountain view into san jose, looks like things are really bogged down along 280 southbound as you work your way through downtown san jose. so a pretty rough ride in the south bay. if you're commuting in and out of san francisco, there are some trouble spots here, also. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza where they do have the metering lights on which is usually the noncomputer connection, a busy ri

light along the nimitz freeway as we take a live look near oakland with traffic moving nicely northbound and southbound. clear in both directions between san jose and oakland. it's a good time to be on the freeways. if you're traveling out of marin county, traffic is pretty light on 101. we have the ongoing closure on westbound 37 and that should be wrapped up soon. we have broke work on the richmond-san rafael bridge with one lane closed in both directions but that should wrap up within the next couple of minutes. the next time around we will take a look at the south bay traffic. >>> the westbound lanes of highway 37 near novato are expected to reopen today. the levee broke during the storms last week letting the highway. yesterday the marin county board of supervisors voted unanimously to ratify the state of emergency declaration. the crews are repaving a section of the road that was underwater and expect lanes to be open by noon. >>> i am anne makovec at the live news desk. in washington dc you can see the snow coming down and they are in the midst of a big winter storm. we are waitin
