on our campus we have all these 18-year-olds who are fascinated by nina simone. -- her musicy speaks to them, and her later music especially speaks to them. it is not always the case, but in a lot of cases good music continues to be heard and injures -- endures. >> larry, you helped start this all 50 years later? all, nina simone was in philadelphia, lived in philadelphia for quite a period of time as a young woman. she performed at various jazz clubs. her husband at the time was a cop. again, it started before the 1960's, it started in the 1950's with r&b music and white kids embracing it. they did not necessarily see a difference. a difference between races. growing up, the mass media inted at an important part the development of music, which was bandstand, the first national televised show for kids. show thato a dance played music, spoke at different .anguage than protest songs folk music, just developing and atting kids their own voice helping to elect a young president who people said they would never elect a catholic. there are was enough people that it did not matter too. us t
