progressive nina turner lost to establishment candidate shontel brown. trump's gop pick, mike carey, won his race. cnn chief national affairs correspondent jeff zeleny is with us now. big takeaways. what are you seeing from these races? >> the big takeaways are that president biden, his agenda was at the center of this race, the democratic one in cleveland. we saw shontel brown embracing it. she said, look, send me to washington to help advice president biden's agenda. nina turner who is a recognized face here, a former cnn commentator, a big supporter of bernie sanders, she supports the biden agenda but wanted to push the message in a much more progressive direction. it's a classic age-old fight we've been watching inside the democratic party. a moderate lane or progressive lane. the moderate won out. so there's no question with president biden in the white

progressive nina turner is backed by many house progressives. brown is backed by hillary clinton and the congressional black caucus. jeff zeleny joins us live from cleveland. a test of the democratic party's struggle at an interesting moment. >> john, there's no doubt. this is not a question of the democratic majority. whoever wins the primary tomorrow is almost certain to win the general election. this is a democratic district. but there is a question about the direction of the democratic party. are progressives going to see a moment here that they really have not seen all yearlong in other primary races across the country. we spent the weekend in cleveland. and i can tell you there is a sense of a reviving some of the old divisions going back to the 2016 campaign, you mentioned hillary clinton endorsing shawn tell brown, a council member here. nina turner, a familiar face a long-time bernie sanders ally. bernie sanders was out in force endorsing her. establishment versus progressive. and we had a flavor here of

defeating progressive nina turner. it's not only that this pitted the democratic establishment against the progressive wing, this primary got quite ugly along the way. what can we take from all of this? joining us is cnn political director david chal land. >> both of these ladies had a long history in cleveland through local politics. the race become nationalized and that changed the tenor of it. over the weekend we saw senator bernie sanders supporting neen that turner. we saw members of the congressional black caucus supporting shontel brown. president biden's agenda was at the center of the conversation. which one of these candidates will help push his agenda forward. shontel brown was the answer. she said she was going to run as a partner. it was a coalition of moderate

bernie sanders acolyte, if you will, in nina turner, who was not happy when she lost. she said this was big evil money, manipulating the race. what is the impact? that's a primary in ohio but you see this every day on capitol hill, these same tensions between the progressives and the establishment. >> this was a really interesting split screen on the hill. you had the big eviction moratorium and then the establishment candidate won in ohio. all of the senior democrats were texting me like let's see what matters here. it's the primary. progressives can do so much. the eviction moratorium was important but there are only so many sit-ins and outside activist tactics you can do on the hill. >> it's interesting because if you just look at the interpret, the progressives dominate the

while nina turner campaigned with bernie sanders and other progressives. what does your win tell us about where the future of the democratic party lies and what voters want in ohio? there's been a lot said about your win, eric adams' win in the democratic candidacy for mayor of new york. in your opinion, is that being overblown? is it something else? what does your win mean? >> so, first of all, reverend al, thank you for having me on your show. i'm a big fan. but i think this win says a lot of different things. first and foremost, i've never really ascribed to labels. when i'm helping people get their needs met, when someone calls me and says, shontel, how can i get my hands on a ppe loan, or when is the next food bank or how can i get rental

[ laughter ] it really is interesting seeing how this played out in ohio. we were all watching this because we hear republicans often talk about how democrats are these liberal socialists, right? but then you see brown's win in ohio as well as eric adams in new york city. president biden, sure doesn't seem like progressives have control of the democratic party. >> well, as an ohioan, i think ohio voters are very far from socialism. if you look at the district in which brown and turner were running, that was former secretary fudge's district. before that congressman stephanie tubbs jones. very democratic, black women, northeast working-class folks.

on the progressive side, you have nina turner, a former state senator who was, of course, a surrogate for senator bernie sanders during the presidential campaign. she is advocating for universal health care and a $50 minimum wage in an effort to advance more progressive policies. on the establishment side is a local county council member who chairs the county's democratic party. she has aligned herself as a loyalist to president joe biden. joining me now, our nbc news senior political editor. so the race for the 11th district in the cleveland area, it has drawn a lot of national attention from democrats and it's taking a bit of a nasty turn. certainly when you're talking about interparty fighting. take us how -- take us through this. how contentious is this race getting? >> yeah. . watching the tv advertisements airing in this cleveland-akron district are the nastiest democrat on democrat ads i've seen probably since going back

this one pits nina turner. that's a name you might know from cnn and a top ally of bernie sanders, against shontel brown, a cuyahoga county congress member who is influenced by the dems. we talk about covid and you have to occupy the sexes to see if we can replicate it. listen to president biden giving props to the most vaccinated state in the country. they may be the first to reach true herd immunity. listen. >> this past week, the most vaccinated state in america, vermont, has seen just five new cases, five per day of covid-19 for every 100,000 people who live in that state. that means on any given day, only 30 people in the entire state of vermont got covid-19.

we saw it again earlier this week in akron, ohio, where you saw schon tell brown beat nina turner, who was a well-known surrogate for bernie sanders. we saw it in the virginia gubernatorial primary and we saw it in the new york city democratic mayoral primary where eric adams beat back a slew of progressive candidates. the bottom line is, at the ballot box we have an idea of what the base of the democratic party looks like. it looks a lot more like the democratic coalition joe biden put together. in congress right now, the base of the party is perceived of the progressives. the question is, where are democrats going to govern? govern towards that base in the electorate or the supposed base on social media and that they've seen elected to some parts of congress? >>> when we come back, more evidence that in politics, twitter is just not american.

brown but progressives are backing nina turner. millions of dollars are being spent. lots of attack ads. name calling. what do you think this outcome will mean for the direction of the party? >> well, it all depends upon what the results will be. you know, i -- i'm a great believer that we must do everything we can to elevate the political discourse in this country. we just had a president, who lowered the discord -- discourse to a level unimaginable. we cannot have legislating by sound bytes. and i am a big believer that we should be working on trying to make headway for the american people. but there seem to be people who are more interested in what the headline is. more interested in got-ya politics. and so, i've been supporting chantel because chantel asked me to support her. chantel is the kind of person that i think will help elevate

nina turner has several hundred thousand followers there.aces are not reflective of what's happening on the ground. let's talk about the republican side. last week the former president trump endorsed a texas candidate and he lost. overnight the guy he wanted in ohio won the primary. what do you think? >> and won big. look at the margin, 24 points in a crowded field. 24-point margin over his next competitor there. yeah, the mike carrey endorsemet was big. inside republican politics donald trump's stamp of approval means something. that's why you saw them put money in that race. he didn't just endorse, he wanted to make sure he came away with a victory in ohio and he did. that will give him another data point inside the party and say you need my endorsement to move forward. it's tough to make the argument, given what we've seen in his fund- fund-raising, given that he can turn out victories with the weight of his support, that donald trump's power is waning in the party. >> if the midterms were held tomorrow, would democrats lose the house? >>

that she's more pragmatic than nina turner.biden and the white house. and jeremy is right, it's about making sure even in washington, they want people come here and do the work, right? they want to make sure the people coming are a little bit -- even some folks in this white house want to make sure people are a little more moderate, right? joe biden won because he's a little more moderate, he's a little more pragmatic. and we're seeing this in some of these special elections and these primaries as they're happening. you look at the new york mayoral race and eric adams won mostly because of a biden-style democrat. that's something is that we're watching. as all of the evidence piles on top of each other, is in fact that voters after four years of donald trump really do want to continue, as we started with biden, making sure that more moderates who are going to come here, can compromise and get work done as opposed to completely flip the table over and come here in washington and do that work. it's also important to note that yes

and that was the position nina turner was in.at yourself and how you blew that lead rather than claiming it was an outside force. i can't think of another example of someone blowing a lead that big outside of a scandal. >> you just opened a hornet's nest. eric, i want to turn to you, because, again, i think a lot of this is the media framing around this and you always have such great insight, calling out the media in what they can do better. what's your take on this fight? >> i think we're in the dog days of summer. political press is kind of scratching around for good stories, and i think the press misses the trump circus, the scandal, the hate tweets and things like that. the press has complained openly that the biden administration is so boring to cover. so i think ohio in 11, it was a way to gin up conflict and re-fight the 2016 hillary, bernie sanders battle. but that's not really what unfolded here. this idea that there was a schism in the party and this was moderate versus liberal, if it had been a very liberal black woman

of moderate democrats, also jewish democrats who were concerned that some of the rhetoric that nina turneran-american voters in that district. so a coalition of voters, but it continued setting the signal that moderate democrats, the joe biden wing of the party, if you will, is alive and well and winning these primary races. i just learned a few moments ago, an official says the president called shontel brown to congratulate her, and looks forward to her winning in november. with a district like this, it's a fait accompli -- >> it's the ball game. you don't like to say it because you like to be most perfectly precise. i'll say it. it's the ball game. david, i heard your voice this morning. you can't draw too many conclusions from a special election. with this, do you see this as offering any message for the midterms? >> in terms of the midterms, kate and what jeff just said, this is not a competitive battleground district. this won't determine control of the house. it's a reliably democratic district. yes, this gives us information about the state of the democratic party and where you can
