"eyewitness news" reporter noelle mclaren is live in wilmington with all the breaking details for us.lle. >> reporter: well, delaware drivers can breathe a long awaited sigh of relief with the reopening of this bridge. now, deldot representatives tell us that these columns that you see over here surrounded by scaffolding have new support systems which make it safe enough for the reopening which just happened under three hours ago. the first traffic going in both directions is a welcome surprise for many who were expecting lanes to be closed for yet another week. both the north and southbound lanes have been closed most of the summer after a driver noticed four columns tilting just south of the christina river. engineers say soil stockpiling under the bridge may have been part of the problem. the bridge was deemed unsafe and shut down june 2nd. drivers got a bit of a break at the end of july when southbound lanes were reopened. now their commute can return back to normal. now, if you recall, president obama used the broken i-495 bridge as a backdrop to speak about the need for infrastr

ktvu's noelle walker is live with what she knows about the fire. >> reporter: the fire department said the fire department will be here through the night monitoring things, keeping an eye to make sure no hot spots spark up. that is the building right there. built in the early 1900s. it was vacant and in the process of being renovated when the fire started around noon. you can see the smoke from news chopper 2. the fire burned inside the hotel between lower floors is up and a light well. two dozen construction workers were inside the building at the time. all of them made it out but 8 were treated for smoke inhalation. firefighters got the install to get -- signal to get out of the building till they knew it was safe. >> they were able to get water on the fire between the first and second floor but they weren't able to contain it enough to render it safe. the building is very valuable but not worth risking lives for. >> reporter: investigators have not determined the cause of the fire but they will be looking at construction activities to see if that might have anything to do with it. t
