nokia's handset business last year is retiring the name saying, quote, nokia, as a brand, will not besed going forward. end of an era for nokia and finland, the birth place of nokia. >> it's now disappearing, huge blow. 90% of the people think it was a really, really bad thing. >> reporter: the prime minister of finland says microsoft is not the only culprit in the death of the nokia. the i phone killed nokia and the ipad killed the finnish paper industry. it once accounted for a quarter of fin issue growth. >> last year alone we lost 7,000 jobs around nokia. so many other companies are dependent on nokia. >> reporter: ad developers like angry bird maker are trying to reinvent the finnish economy. that will take time. the finns are far from finished. nokia is involved in other business but many are sad to see the phones go. >> many people out there will miss it. >> won't we all? >>> ivan cab repaira is hcabrer the weather. you and i are obsessed with our phones. >> i haven't changed mine for a couple of years. >> i have a nokia in the closet somewhere. >> a palm trio back in the day.

nokia mobile phones are about to go the way of the dinosaurs. at their peak in 2003 one in three phones sold around the world was a nokia. it was not able to keep up with the popularity of smartphones from apple samsung and others. microsoft completed a $7 billion purchase of the business in april. and microsoft announced it will replace the nokia name with its own, starting with the looumia range of smartphones. i'm joined by helen keegan, a mobile technology expert from london. are we surprised by this decision? >> no, we are not surprised. this has been a long time coming, and when we knew that the nokia business, handset business was solved to microsoft, it was inevitable that the name would go by the wayside as part of that. >> what about the agreements to keep the nokia name for a decade before changing it? why have they ditched it. >> nokia is kept in the infrastructure and mapping. we'll see it in telecoms, and nokia is a company and operational from finland, but not in the handset business. they have been pushing the looumia brand stron

you know, look, less than a year after agreeing with nokia and this deal that it will keep the nokiar up to ten years, microsoft says, you know what? we don't want that nokia name attached to these hand sets. why? what's the change of heart? >> well, the nokia brand has been really struggling in the past couple of years. especially in some key markets, the smart phone markets. if you look at the u.s. or western market, nokia has been doing very well at all. the lum ya brand is much stronger nowadays.ia brand is mr nowadays. >> for people who buy a microsoft hand set, basically inside, that hand set itself will actually be nokia technology? >> yes, yes. it's nokia technology, developed by nokia, but microsoft technology from now. >> we know the global picture of this market of mobile phones, smart phones is so fierce. even samsung is suffering. i mean, really, isn't it a bit late for microsoft to come to this party with its own hand sets? >> it might be a little bit late in terms of manufacturing hand sets, but microsoft has been in this space for well over like six, seven years, some

while the board wound up ultimately agreeing with that -- >> they bought nokia. >> they bought nokia. by that time they had heard from my i will probably go whether you buy or not. >> rose: you already said that. >> yes. >> rose: why did you say that gifelt if we buy it, we'd had enough negative attention between us it would be better off giving it to a new leader, if the board wanted to buy it. and if the board didn't want to buy it, i wanted support and if you don't have it, sometimes it's time to go. they bought it knowing i would probably say this is a good time to hand off the leadership, not just of nokia but the whole company to a new leader. >> rose: it sounds like everybody signed on to that idea. >> yeah. at that stage. if we hadn't had our tumultuous discussion, who knows? who knows? but we did. and then i said, look, there's an advantage in this next generation of microsoft, my replacement calls it cloud first, mobile first. i think you can also call it devices and services because those are our new capabilities-- in this new world, let the new leader build this from the t

we bought nokia after that. the biggest up was doing surface. i love our partners. i love hp, dell, lenovo, but there are things you can do and be or complete in your vision, your feedback loop is tighter, customers tell you what they like and don't like much more quickly. i don't regret the journey or the fact that we are true menace the profitable by making operating system software for pcs, but relative to new form factors, like the phone, we should have moved faster. >> you make the argument that because your culture was about software, your dedication was software, it was what brought you there. >> absolutely. software is also the magic in the hardware. it's not even like you abandoned software. it's how you address it and make it beautiful. it is highly advantageous, particularly in these very small form factors to do hardware as well. not required. samsung does not make the android operating system. it comes from google. google just tries to monetize through searches. in most businesses today, this is trying to become more direct with their customers. that's

sales boost comes after the largest round of layoffs in the company's history and the acquisition of nokia's mobile phone operations. what do the results reveal about their strategy? i want to bring in matt mcill way who sold a company to microsoft. so matt what do you think this report reveals about him and the work he's done so far? >> i think that he's off to a good start. a big part of it is that he is having the company think more outside in and listening to what customers want and also being much more open to the ecosystem. that's showing up more in cloud than in p.c. sales. i think they're fortunate in the secular trend on p.c. sales. i would note actually that on the application side, the office 365 numbers are very impressive. >> would you agree, corey? >> a lot of the numbers look good. including some things that were troubled, gross numbers in the phone margins were better when you didn't think they could get better. but he's got a lot to deal with, wrestling with the acquisition of know key qua maybe chief among them but also chaining the culture of microsoft to be more collabora

who would have thought nokia would have produced good up side for them in the quarter?ld about a million units a surface which is not great, but for them it's pretty good. they started selling xbox in china. there was a bit of a sell-in for the quarter for china. there was good news on the cloud side. it didn't show up on the up side you would see on the hardware side. >> does this mark a turn in the overall narrative for this company? >> i think the company's weathered the worst of the transition from office. that revenue is growing on a net basis. the loss of and the gain in cloud is net positive for revenues. satya is about to launch the expansion into the cloud. microsoft will be the biggest cloud company in the world starting this quarter. it will be bigger than amazon. infrastructure platform as a service. >> i was going to ask you, everybody is talking about the cloud. you hear it from oracle, sales force, microsoft is winning the cloud right now? >> it would be nice if it were all organic growth. 128% growth. unfortunately, it's coming out of other parts of the

so, could samsung go the way of nokia?ld say first of all that samsung remains very, very profitable. in that third quarter of this year, july, august, and september, it made $4 billion. but that was still a big decline. a decline of 60%. so it's all in the wrong direction. two reasons really. it's getting picked on at the top end of the mark by apple. the iphone 6, the big iphone 6. samsung started with these bigger phones, and they took off. apple's now following, and more than following. and the other thing that's hitting samsung is at the bottom end of the market, cheap, high quality phones from chinese companies and indian companies are biting away at the bottom end. samsung's retaliated by saying that it's going to address that middle and bottom range of the market with new products competitively priced. that remains to be seen. one thing about this market, though, it's partly electronics and technology and big brains stuff. of course it is. but it's also fashion. and fashion can be awfully fickle. >> steve evans the

if you take out trouble of having acquired nokia's mobile phone business, right, jay, you would haveery nice earnings report? >> even with the, hi, liz, by the way. they had a beat across the board. their total revenues at 23.2 billion, a billion seven above our expectations. earnings beat, doing quick calculations, looks like four of their business segments out of the six beat our expectations. the other two are in line or a little bit light but not materially some turns out the phone business was better than we thought. the surface revenues, the tablet, was more than double what we had thought. the cloud revenues were up almost 1%. versus our -- 130%. versus our 90%. liz: let me stop you on the cloud. cloud matters to microsoft. they just showed they're in this great many game. look at that revenue. see how well they have done with this what do you expect in future quarters from the cloud business? >> clearly we'll have to rethink those numbers because they did beat us by a good margin. liz: yeah. >> they're clearly well over $4 billion annual pace. some might argue that is still o
