chairman nolan: did director ramos have something? director ramos: later. >> we began today with special recognition awards. the first award will go to an employee of the safety and security enforcement division. they were originally hired in 2003 as a temporary officer for the boulevard project. he rejoined the agency in 2007 when he began as a parking control officer. they always maiain a professional attitude. his excellent work has made him a standout. they can count on lawrence to rise to the challenge of a duty presented to him. it is this reason they were recognized as a parking control officer of the month in 2010. lawrence volunteered, he noticed a white smoke coming out of the building. he started to honk his horn and blow his whistle to try to awaken the tenants of the building. in due to a quick thinking and heroic actions, numerous people and pets were able to escape the building safely. we proudly acknowledged him for his professionalism. i would like to present the award to lawrence. >> good afternoon, chairman, directo

chairman nolan: thank you. is there a second? are you speaking on this one? go ahead. >> i have spoken in front of this commission in the past. i think the new director comes a very good credentials based on the past director. i think the salary is a little out of line. if you look at the break out across the board, the biggest problem with the city is the salary and pensions. the previous director came from atlanta and was paid $180,000 a year. it is probably in line with most directors across the united states except washington, d.c. and new york city. even though we are now paying the assistant summer around those numbers, is proudly more in line with the city and county can handle in a budget. they will assume directorship and how it is part of the -- directorship is part of the mta. i don't know why gavin newsom picked him several years ago. in view of the liabilities that will come along with this man, it is off the charts. $300,000 a year, you're selling medallions to benefit your bottom line. it will pay for part of his pension and other pensions and

chairman nolan: next item. >> you have concluded regular items. chairman nolan: is there a second? we will go to closed session. thank>> thank you, everyone, for being here this morning. i have indicated to our new chief and i will be an active participant in comstat. of course, this is only one of many ways that we measure our effectiveness in the community policing in the city. i have been fond of looking at data and making sure we compare ourselves to previous years, look at trends and specific categories, crime to property, homicides, violent crime to aurora's, and other areas. various local captains of all the stations know that the chief and i, command staff, and police commission, are working together to make sure that we work our best and keep our positive trends going. we are now enjoying, year to date, a 6% improvement over last year on all categories of violent crimes. we are still down in homicides since 1960, continuing a trend that was very strong last year and continues to this year. all of this as a result of the men and women of the police department working closel
