joining me right now, republican strategist kaley mckennedy and democratic strategist nomiki konst. so kaley, carson's campaign says his trip to jordan is a listening and learning trip. but in recent weeks, carson has come under criticism for his knowledge or lack thereof of his knowledge of foreign affairs. will this trip be what he needs to kind of bolster his foreign policy chops? >> it definitely can be the first step. you know, if you think back to obama's campaign in 2008, people were really questioning his foreign policy credentials. so what did he do? in 2008, he went to jordan, he went to iraq, and he kind of buffed up those foreign policy credentials. and that's what carson is trying to do. this is the first step. i don't know if it's enough to have him keep up with the likes of ted cruz or donald trump or others who are perceived to be good on foreign policy, but it's a good step. >> so nomiki, you agree, a good first step, especially since he has fallen into first place in iowa according to the most recent quinnipiac poll, he is losing to some evangelical supporters. so

joining me from new york, democratic strategist, nomiki konst.miki, carson usually quiet and calm but last night he was a little agitated and he said he was being treated differently than president obama was treated when he ran for president. listen. >> wait a minute. hold on one minute. one second here. now, you're saying that something that happened, that a scholarship was offered is a big deal, but the president of united states, his academic record being sealed is not -- wait a minute, tell me -- tell me how there's equivalence there. it doesn't matter where it is. that's a silly argument. tell me how there's equivalence there. tell me how there is equivalence there. tell me, somebody, please. >> so nomiki, what do you think is going on here? this is material that he put out there. he's repeated this material, whether it be in his book, on the campaign trail, in sit-down interviews with various networks, but now he seems troubled by it. what's really behind this in your view? >> so, you know, i think there are a few things happening here. ben

. >> nomiki, are you suggesting that she wasn't referencing attacking a shooter with a gun, wrestlingm down as in the case of the restaurant paris or the concert hall in paris that was stormed with armed terrorists in. >> that's exactly what she was doing because in the case video, there's a zion to this, this isn't hocus pocus. fbi has researched this and sent out video where they instruct people to use coffee mugs, chairs, fire extinguishers to knock the weaponry out of their hands. you don't want a shootout. >> i've got to get gail in here. what is your take on this? is would appear that she was making a suggestion that if you're armed and carrying a weapon to then use it and apply that force. how did you see it? >> yes. concealed carry means that soft targets the may be not so soft and isis has said that they would like to bring a paris-style attack or worse to d.c. the d.c. city council should take immediate emergency action to streamline the process where law-abiding d.c. citizens can get conceal carry permit. now in the past year 79% of conceal carry permit applications have be

nomiki, you don't like this, why not?mpanies stepping up and educating citizenry is bedrock of our society. great for pr and great partnership with these educational institutions but it will not fix the problem. when you have 75 million millenials, 30% which want to sell an organ to pay off student loins. we have a student loan program, when $1.1 trillion in student loan debt. that is not going to be solved with companies, especially companies with limitations on these offers. some of them actually decreased the offer. for instance, starbucks offer, they got a lot of attention when they offered free tuition through asu online no -- neil: understood. kathy, you don't quite agree. explain. >> no, certainly private solution while i might tweak this one somewhat, private solution is certainly better than public solution. for years the government, including obama and president clinton promise free things. every time we do that or they do that they overpromise and underdeliver. certainly never worked in the past. private sector
