. >> you are not going to get off that easy, because in a non-partisan way but as someone who has covered so much politics and covered so many of these and worked with so many of us and is looked up to by so many of us here, how does this moment feel, what the democratic party just did? >> well, with all of the talk of the problems and difficulties along the way, a woman has been nominated by the democratic party, the first time that's happened, and it feels extraordinary. i have to say. i remember being in little rock in 1992 and seeing some of the women who were being introduced as cabinet members and thinking wow, they're of my generation. these are women in the cabinet. and there were only a few. it was not a big number. but to see the change in politics, the aspirations that michelle obama spoke of yesterday, and she praising hillary clinton, remember how bitter that race was in '08, praising hillary clinton for what she now represents to her daughters, those wonderful young women growing up in the white house. it's a pretty amazing role model, no matter how this turns out, all of us

you guys are totally non-partisan, neither liberal nor conservative, but you have been aggressive at sticking up for veterans, in particular veterans that get overlooked. and the issue of women in combat and the issue of women in the military broadly became sort of unexpectedly, at least to me, unexpectedly controversy when the republicans decided to put an antiwomen in combat plank in their platform. mike pence has a history of talking about women being unsuited not just for combat, but unsuited for the military itself. in terms of the veterans community and that issue, where does that go? we're getting an unexpected partisan divide on an issue that i wouldn't have expected it on. >> yeah. i think the reality is it's way out of step with our current military. i mean, women have been in combat really since the beginning of time. but in the american military, they've been in combat, definitely post-9/11. now they're in combat roles. they'll be allowed in the infantry, they're going through ranger school. so, they're really out of step with the functioning military. transgender people
