with us today is john heilemann, cynthia tucker, nbc's norah o'donnell and "the washington post" michael gerson. with barely five weeks left before democrats may lose the congress, president obama is trying to fire up the people who sent him but have lost faith. some presidents were the same politicians in office as they were running for office. f.d.r. was, reagan was, clinton was. a moment this week showed the contrast between president obama and president clinton. with barack obama, recall how george bush 41 suffered in comparison to clinton in the 1992 town hall debate when a voter asked a feel your pain question. >> how has the national debt personally affected each of your lives? and if it hasn't, how can you find a cure for the economic problems of the common people if you have no experience in what's ailing them? >> i think the national debt affects everybody. obviously it has a lot to do with interest rates, it -- >> on a personal basis, how has it affected you? >> has it affected you personally? >> i'm sure it has. i love my grandchilden. >> tell me how it affected you again? >>

norah o'donnell is breaking down the winners and losers. all right, certainly wasn't dull last night. let's start in delaware. so, you've got, you've got this christine o'donnell who, for a lot of people, it seemed, came out of no where. she beat a guy who had all the experience, had quite a bit of money, what happened there? >> well, now you have the republican hopes of winning joe biden's seat shattered. i mean, she is not the republican's dream candidate. she is their nightmare candidate. the state gop chair in delaware has called her dilutional and said she cannot be elected a dogcatcher. there are a lot of enraged and stunned republicans here in washington. saying privately they will probably not pour any money into that race and it's done and it's now likely the democrats will hold that seat and hold on to joe biden's seat. i think what's also stunning about it. not only it shows the power of the tea party and palin-endorsed candidate, but also what christine od'donnell herself sad this morning republican canbleism because, chris, karl

i'm norah o'donnell here in washington. we have a lot of news to cover today. first, though, the weather and what's left of tropical stonico is pounding the carolinas. people are dealing with washed out roads and power outages. the storm is tracking further north today. let's get to central new jersey. the morning commute was a next. and it's going to be that tough ride home for a lot of people as well, right? >> reporter: yeah, absolutely, norah. as you can see, things aren't so bad right now. things are expected to get much worse. worse weather is the way. what's happening is essentially this storm right now is parked to the west of us. so they're getting a lot now. that's when this area will be affected. new jersey is expected more rain fall than they got for the entire month of august. they're also expecting high wind gusts of 20 to 30 miles per hour. the wind is picking up a little bit right now. some areas are expecting as high as 50 mile-per-hour gusts. now in terms of flooding, i want to show you quickly the river is right on the other side of these tre

chief washington correspondent norah o'donnell joins me and mark murray. does this defeign what the gop needs to do in 48 days? >> probably not norah. sorry, contessa. it doesn't really change what they need. the political wind are at their back right now. everything is going their way. yes, they might not have the mathematical edge to get the majority in the senate but they still stand to pick up some big gains in the house and also in the senate. this does hurt their chances of winning the senate seat in delaware but it doesn't end and as christine o'donnell's victory proved, anything is possible right now and she could be able to pull off the win perhaps come november. i mean, she certainly starts out with a disadvantage but as even she said this is an unpredictable season so far. >> now the republican leaders in washington are making it clear they'll back here. in fact, the head of the republican national senatorial committee cornyn says personally we stand by the nominees include including o'donnell in delaware. that statement coming out this morning.

msnbc chief washington correspondent norah o'donnell is live in washington. that's one of the things that makes you go hmm, but it's not the only one. >> well, look, karl rove has called her nutty. and she's responded by accusing him of political cannibalism. now we realize christine o'donnell is going to have to eat a lot of her own words. including this interview from some 15 years ago, in 1995, when she was with the concerned women of america here in d.c., and she was asked specifically if she believes that women should serve in taxpayer funded military service schools. and she said that it was constitutional to exclude women from such schools, and she said that having women in those schools cripples the readiness of our defense. her opponents also point out that christine o'donnell has insisted that west point has had to lower their standards. those are christine o'donnell's words, in order for men and women to compete. contessa, as you know, in 1996, the supreme court weighed in on this with vmi saying the categorical exclusion of women did not equal pro

chief washington correspondent nora nor norah o'donnell joins me now. tell me what it gives us as we're heading into november. >> it reflects what we've seen in our poll, a lot of americans are fed up with the direction of this country. they don't trust washington. they don't trust big institutions. and they want change. and then you see segments of the voting population that not only want change, but they are mad as hell and that is particularly the tea party movement which has really driven and controlled a lot of these primary contests like we just saw this week in delaware electing someone like christine o'donnell who many republicans thinks is unelectable and even karl rove has called her nutty and she was able to win that primary. i was struck by "the new york times" poll today who polled on people's opinions of the tea party and in that they found that close to half of republican voters, 48% say they have a favorable opinion of the movement when nearly all the rest said they have no opinion at all. independents here you see have a double unfavora
