norah o'donnell, good evening-- what's the latest? >> reporter: the president changed strategy today in playing broker in chief met separately with the democrats and then the republicans. these meetings that he's having are smaller, not bipartisan, and they have kicked staff out in order to prevent leaks. the goal of course is still to reach some sort of broad agreement that includes some meaningful reforms. but if anybody thought that that gang of six proposal was the solution, they were hit with a hard dose of reality today. it's really still an open question, how they get this whole thing done in time. as the president's spokesman said today these meetings are about narrowing their options and trying to, quote, figure out in a fairly short order which train we are riding into the station. >> mitchell: a lot of work to do. thank you so much. for much of the nation there's been no relief for that nasty heat wave, now being blamed for 22 deaths. weather experts say it's caused by something called a heat dome, when a large high pressur

norah o'donnell is there again tonight for us. norah? >> reporter: good evening, bob. tonight we're told that the president and vice president are busy making calls up to capitol hill, knowing that as soon as the boehner bill makes it to the senate, they are in a race against the clock to find a solution. today the president issued a strong warning to lawmakers that the time for putting party first is over. >> what's clear now is that any solution to avoid default must be bipartisan. must have the support of both parties that were sent here to represent the american people. not just one faction. >> reporter: he called again on the american people to contact their representatives in congress. >> make a phone call, send an e- mail, tweet. keep the pressure on washington and we can get past this. >> reporter: to help the effort, the president unleashed his reelection campaign's powerful online operation, urging his over nine million twitter followers to tweet republican lawmakers to support bipartisan compromise. when asked why mr. obama was using his campaign resources t

norah o'donnell was in the news conference. she's now outside with the other part of this story. norah? >> reporter: bob, there has been an extraordinary breakdown in trust in government here in washington between the speaker, speaker boehner, and the president of the united states. the speaker called president obama at 5:31 tonight, they spoke for 11 minutes and the speaker said "i'm sorry, the deal's off. i can only negotiate now with the senate." and so we saw the president here in the briefing room who said to us he just can't understand why speaker boehner no longer wants to negotiate with him. >> it is hard to understand why speaker boehner would walk away from this kind of deal and, frankly, if you look at the commentary out there, there are a lot of republicans that are puzzled as to why it couldn't get done. in fact, there are a lot of republican voters out there who are puzzled as to why it couldn't get done. because the fact of the matter is, the vast majority of the american people believe we should have a balanced approach. >> reporter: now, the president said that he

hold on there just for a second because for all the tough talk last night, norah o'donnell is picking up at least some indication at the white house that the president may-- may-- be willing to consider yet another approach. so what have you got, norah? >> reporter: good evening, bob. even tonight as the president issued a veto threat on that house republican plan, his advisors say he's still holding out hope of a compromise. it would have to be, as nancy indicated, some version of those two bills currently in congress and if that is the case it would mean that the president would have to give up on something he has long advocated, and this is having a deficit reduction bill with tax increases. >> this is no way to run the greatest country on earth. >> reporter: after laying out dire consequences in last night's speech, today the president sent his advisors across the airwaves to promote his message. the message is a political one. the president is preaching compromise while republicans are taking the "my way or the highway" approach. today, the president's advisors said mr. obama wou
