he headed west today to defend his energy policy, and chief white house correspondent norah o'donnell is with the president in nevada tonight. norah. >> reporter: scott, with the president taking heat from republicans, he came here to defend his agenda. he wants america to be less dependent on foreign oil, to explore new sources because this white house is keenly aware that those spiking gas prices could doom his reelection chances. the president today came to boulder city, nevada to tour the largest solar plant of its kind in america. these nearly one million solar panels power 17,000 homes. it's the kind of picture-perfect backdrop chosen by the white house for the president to takes on republicans who he says don't take the need for alternative energy seriously. >> think about that mindset, that attitude, that says because something is new, it must not be real. if these guys were around when columbus set sail, they'd be charter members of the flat earth society. >> reporter: but republicans note the price of gas has doubled under the president's watch, and today the conservative re

norah o'donnell traveled with the president today. and she's in columbus, ohio, tonight, norah. >> reporter: and, scott, the president is still facing a lot of criticism for his decision to block the keystone pipeline project. today he went all the way to oklahoma to try and prove that at least he supports part of that pipeline. it was a day when both parties played a bit loose with the facts. >> and today i'm directing my administration to cut through the red tape, break through the bureaucratic hurdles and make this project a priority. >> reporter: today, while the president threw his support behind a portion of the pipeline other, he failed to mention a critical point. these pipes will be used to build the 485-mile southern portion of the pipeline, transporting 700,000 barrels a day from here in cushing, oklahoma, to the gulf of mexico. but here's something to keep in mind-- this part of the pipeline never required presidential approval. only the pipeline's northern leg required presidential action. house speaker john boehner today.

norah o'donnell has been talking to her sources at the white house, and she joins us there theret. norah? r reporter: scott, israeli prime minister netanyahu is pressing president obama to make ke explicit threat of military action against iran if the sanctions fail, but sources tell cbs news that the israelis are not likely to receive such a public assurance. netanyahu is going to raise the issue in an oval office meeting on monday. there has been some very intense inplomacy. u.s. military officials are concerned that israel is elanning an attack on iran, and the israelis are furious about thments made last week by the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, general martin dempsey. sraelid it would be premature for israel to attack iran, but, scott, sources i've spoken with wi general dempsey was just reflecting obama administration policy. >> pelley: norah, thank you. moving on to syria, now. the freedom movement there has suffered a serious defeat in its battle to end the dictatorship of bashar al-assad. a rebel stronghold has fallen in hold hty of homs. e bababa amr neighborhood

chief white house correspondent norah o'donnell is with us. norah good morning. >> the obama administration says there's still time and space to pursue diplomacy is iran. that may not be enough for the israelis. netanyahu plans to press president obama to stay publicly and clearly that the u.s. red line is to prevent iran from gaining nuclear capability and not just a nuclear weapon. >> the last time president obama and israeli prime minister netanyahu met, it did not go well. and already the tension is building over whether the u.s. has done enough to prevent iran from developing a nuclear weapon. the israelis fear they would be a nuclear iran's first target. on capitol hill, secretary of defense leon panetta tried to reassure skeptics. >> we are committed not just to contain but to prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon. >> but secretary of state hillary clinton faced a tough audience. some staunch supporters of israel questioned the administration's resolve. >> what are the red lines that the iranians cannot cross? >> i think it's probab

megyn: before norah o'donnell asked that question another reporter suggested president obama was doingth his reelection efforts. in 1980 poll.taken around this time of year showed president jimmy carter would easily win reelection against a gop candidate considered a sure loser. ronald reagan. didn't turn out that way. michael reagan is the late president's son and chairman of the reagan group. they didn't think your dad would win it was january 1980. jimmy carter 63% in the hypothetical matchup. and ronald reagan 32%. 63% to 32% and we know how that ended. are people counting out mitt romney, other candidates on the gop side a little too soon? >> what you in fact for wishing for with jimmy carder is wishing for ronald reagan in 1983. he was an actor, governor much california with hollywood, i can easily beat this guy and it was a landslide 50% to 40% in notch of that year. but you might also remember during that process we were going through a rough primary. four or five different candidates vying for the nomination. megyn: it sound familiar. four or five would-be nominees vying for t

o'donnell. she's sitting in for bob shaefer and of course, the big question, norah, did you think the words etchtch would be linked? >> good day to you, derek. usually it's my four-year-old twins that are talking about a etch a sketch, not republican presidential candidates. but mitt romney's top adviser got into trouble when he said that when the general elections start, it's going to be like an etch a sketch. you can erase everything that happened before and push the reset button. it wasn't just democrats that pounced, it was also the other republican that are running for president. newt gingrich and rick santorum have been walking around on the campaign trail with an etch a sketch in order to make fun of mitt romney. so we are going to talk to rick santorum on sunday on face the nation and in fact, he mentioned that voting that has been happening tomorrow in the state of louisiana. rick santorum is way up in the polls. >> he is way up in the polls. everybody expects him to win that. how much does it matter when some of that flow of inevidentability is around mitt romney? >> it will give rick
