i'm norah o'donnell, and thank you for being with us. to begin tonight with the fate of social media app tiktok hanging in the balance. in a rare moment of bipartisanship, the house voted overwhelmingly to pass a bill that would ban the popular platform unless it severs ties with the chinese communist party. president biden vowed to sign the bill if it passes the democratic-controlled senate and if the bill becomes law, it would give tiktok's chinese-based parent company bytedance six months to sell the video sharing app or it would be removed from app stores and web hosting services here in the u.s. now, tiktok's massive lobbying efforts were not enough to stop the crackdown, despite a flood of phone calls to members of congress and these online influencers who are here in washington visiting capitol hill. cbs's scott macfarlane is going to start us off tonight from capitol hill. >> reporter: tiktok has lured 170 million american users with its quick viral videos. but perhaps nothing has spread faster than a plan in congress off from it

i am norah o'donnell. and thank you for being with us. to more turbulence in the air and on the ground for boeing with the terrifying incident involving a passenger jet over new zealand and a new investigation into the company's practices. we will have more than that in just a moment. but beginning with the breaking news coming in of a deadly school bus accident in western illinois. state police say five people were killed including three children when the school bus crossed over the yellow line and then slammed into a semi truck. both the bus and the truck burst into flames killing everyone on board in both vehicles. cbs's roxana saberi is going to start us off tonight with the tragic details. >> the semi has hit a school bus. one of the vehicles is on fire. >> reporter: charred and twisted metal is all that remains of the school bus and semi truck that collided in rushville, illinois, this morning. >> preliminary information indicates that the bus was traveling west on route 24 and for an unknown reason crossed over into the eastbound l

i'm norah o'donnell, and thank you for being with us on this wednesday night, and we do want to beginight with a rising crime rate in new york on america's largest subway system. with millions of commuters and tourists writing every day. well, now, next ordinary new approach by the governor there to bring down crime in the big apple. the democratic governor announcing a major crackdown, hundreds of national guard will begin tonight patrolling subway platforms and checking riders bags. the show of force comes after a recent spike in crime in the underground transit, including three killings since january. and even today, just hours after the announcement, a train conductor reported that she was hit in the head with a glass bottle. cbs's elaine quijano spoke with subway riders about the new security. >> reporter: new york governor kathy hochul's plan is aimed at improving subway rider safety, adding 1,000 more personnel, including 750 national guard troops, to help with patrols and random bag searches. anyone looking to do harm or spread fear on our subways, you will be caught. >> repor

. ♪ ♪ good evening, i am norah o'donnell. and thank you for being with us. to begin with the news and analysis of that historic decision from the supreme court. the justices ruling that states cannot bar donald trump from running for another term. even though he is accused by some of insurrection. colorado and several other states were seeking to disqualified trauma because of his action surrounding the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. now today's decision was unanimous. all nine justices agreed that trump cannot be barred from the ballot. and perhaps the most important ruling about a presdential election of more than two decades since the decision of bush versus gore in 2000. this is the key paragraph of the ruling. "states may disqualified persons attempting to hold state office, but states have no power under the constitution with respect to federal offices, especially the presidency." now the courts three liberal members say the court's majority went too far. justices sonya soto mayor, elena kagan, anton g ketanji brown jackson expressed frustrati

i'm norah o'donnell and thank you for being with us.e going to begin tonight with donald trump facing a cash crunch. the former president is on the brink of being forced to surrender some of his most valuable real estate properties to help pay that $454 million civil fraud judgment in new york. he's already admitted that he doesn't have the nearly half a billion dollars in cash, entity's lawyers revealed that more than 30 firms that they were unable to or "unwilling" to accept the wrist associate with such a large bond. the clock is ticking with the bond to do next week. it's worth remembering the civil judgment stems from a ruling that trump falsely valued part of his real estate empire for financial gain. and then on the campaign trail, trump is also defending himself after a series of disturbing remarks about migrants, january 6th defendants, and warning of a "bloodbath" if he loses in november. it was all while discussing tariffs on chinese made cars. cbs's robert costa is here and he'll start us off tonight. >> reporter: former pre
