hillary, make a deal. >>> nordstrom reporting second quarter results. let's go back to gerri willis with the numbers. i was help this one too, doing my part at nordstrom. reporter: you didn't do enough. a split decision. earnings a big beat, 90 cents a share versus 75 cents a share expectation but revenue falling short, 3.87 billion in the quarter compared to 3.93 billion expectations. so split decision. good on bottom line. revenue line, not so great. this is company that had high expectations. they are up almost i believe 9%, 10% now after hours. that is a very strong performance. let me tell you what is going on beyond that. digital business. up 4%. represents about 30% of their business. that is very good news. they also are reporting themselves, this according to nordstrom, strong inventory discipline, expense ferb sys. that is what they're attributing the positive results to. also a stronger performance in their, softer performance, pardon me at the anniversary sale and off price business. i can tell you net sales, seems like they're guiding lower

in ordnordstrom is surging -- jg us now is paul, a retail analyst with a hold rating on nordstrom and35 a price target do you share this optimism about the back end of the year >> we're whole rated and while profitability was far better than we expected in the second quarter rkts some of that was drif p by cutting costs and frankly, the company is outlining a pretty aggressive outlook in our view as it relates to the second half revenue. as courtney mentioned, down 5% in sales in the second quarter and ultimately, they're outlining a view that they can get to a flattish if not positive by year end while there are, we're probably on the skeptical side. >> you think this is a short squeeze plan on the market today? >> absolutely. expectations were very low for nordstrom with a view for many investors that their full year guidance was going to be cut we did not get that. in fact, they beat earnings in the second quarter pretty meanful meanfully. >> we want to start with your retail winners, who you expect to be b the biggest winners going forwad if not nordstrom. >> absolutely. we think

nordstrom, target, lowe's are all doing extremely well.ich we have right now. stuart: surely it's got to be all eyes on jerome powell, who speaks tomorrow, he's in wyoming, he speaks at 10:00 eastern time real sharp. it will be during our program so obviously, we are going to be dealing with that. but that's what the market's all concerned about, isn't it? will the fed lower rates dramatically and soon? what's your opinion? >> well, i think that historically, the jackson hole symposium has federal reserve members or fed chair before have made statements about what they're going to do regarding rates. i mean, in 2007, ben bernanke signaled he was going to cut rates and he cut 50 basis points the following month. on your show tomorrow, 10:00 a.m., i'm sure retail investors and institutional investors, all eyes will be on jackson hole and the symposium for any statements coming out of the fed. i think they're just going to stay on hold, on pause, where they are right now, as evident by the minutes yesterday that this is a midcycle adjustment.
