i'm norman yee the president of the board of the supervisors and i represent everything i say today. the sentiment of the total board. first of all, i want to thank the department heads and community leaders to be out here on this press conference to stress the importance of our celebration that we have every year, year in and year out. it's something that i grew up with in chinatown. i'm chinese hospital-born kid. every year i look forward to the celebration. it's one of the biggest, most colorful celebrations in the united states. same thing for chinese new year. it's the best in the world outside of china. so, i want always to could continue being able to have that enjoyment. now, we have many different celebrations throughout the last week and so fourth and the one that's going to come on saturday is the biggest, of course. i myself had a lunar new year celebration last week in my own district. it grew from 500 people the year before the first time i did it to last saturday where over 1,000 people came out to celebrate the lunar new year. we have safety people there we rewinded p

so first of all, thank you, norman yee, for selecting theresa for planning commissioner. i agree, i don't know of a better candidate to show racial equity in this year of 2020. it's amazing. theresa, i think i can speak more to what affects theresa. she has done a lot of this work. bishop was actually not staffed. she volunteered and would do that after work every day and make it happen until we finally were able to raise money for it. and bishop, i know you're not familiar with it, but it is one of the only organizations that helps residents get into b.m.r., below market rate housing. i actually see it as her implementation. she looked at the policy and figured out how to make it work when things didn't fit. we have these great ideas, but we don't know how to do that. i think it's important to have someone like her for all people in san francisco. whether you're a business, whether you're a senior, whether you're a parent. she also has a great big view picture. i sometimes get caught in the weeds and she would pull me out and check me because there's a bigger picture, an

members to non-profits, to our elected officials, such as assessor howard chu, and ta collector, ad norman yee and supervisor stefani and supervisor fewer, we are so excited to get this done together. every 10 years the federal government puts together a census to count everyone and to make critical decisions about our future. yet the hard work happens in our local communities right here on the ground. this time we know that it will be harder because the census is digital. and so we must bridge that digital divide. some people discrust government, -- distrust government, so we must work with organizations such as the institute and self-help for the elderly to educate them and inform the community on why it matters that we get counted. let's face it, san franciscoians, many of us live in apartments and s.r.o.s. and folks are just plain busy and may not get around to being counted. so we have to remind them why it matters to be counted in this census. mayor breed and speaker pelosi are here today because they know just how important this work is and how much it matters. thank you and thank you f
