in normandy, france. congratulations, to both evan and mr. stewart for being chosen to participate and thank you for telling the story of an american hero from the greatest generation who paid the ultimate sacrifice. . we look forward to hearing more in the months to come, mr. speaker, i rise today to stand in support of the local veteran who is the last surviving member of his world war ii veterans club. gene became the last member of his club when his lifelong friend, robert, passed away. both were among the 180 men from the stillwater area in washington county, minnesota, who joined the minnesota national guard's 34th infantry before world war ii. after the attacks on pearl harbor shook the nation, they deployed to europe where they helped defend this nation and the world. gene was injured twice during the war and bravely returned to fight each time after recovering. he returned to stillwater, minnesota, in 1944. many of his friends did not return. the survivors in the area formed the a and d last man'

president, a few years ago i had the opportunity to be at the american cemetery at normandy. at the end of the guide -- the tour of that cemetery, the guide had us set down over on a ledge with the english channel to our back, and those 8,000 graves in front of us that we had just looked at and talked about the sacrifices made. and then he flipped open his computer and at that exact same spot on the 20th anniversary of d-day, general eisenhower, former president eisenhower in 11964 was talking to walter cronkite and he said to walter cronkite, you know, walter, my son john graduated on d-day, graduated from west point on d-day. and over the last 20 years i've watched he and his wife raise their family and have the experiences they've had and he said many times i thought about these young men and the life they didn't get to lead because of what they were asked to do. and particularly to have the person sitting there 20 years later who ultimately was the person who asked them to do what they were asked to do and to understand that that's the kind of decision he thought about. i
