we're talking about parts of north korea. and that could lead to flooding as well as potential for mud slides and landslides. we see continued showers across the philippines. we have a tropical depression in the area, just towards the northeast. it doesn't look like it is going to be getting any stronger for the time being. but certainly enhancing the rainfall across the philippines. plenty of showers across indochina as well. let's talk about the temperatures. we have this very cold air descending across mongolia. that's bringing the temperature to just 7 and we'll see the low getting down to minus 4 i think your overnight hour. beijing, 25. for the time being, we're still seeing much of the rest of the continent looking at around 30, upper 20s, low 30s. but we will start to see that changing into the weekend as this cold air descends and we'll see the temperatures coming down by a few degrees. all right, into north america. we'll start also with the storm here. this one is maria, just here down -- moving up towards bermuda.

north korean defectors there is no evidence that the human-rights sedition and north korea has improved as the regime proceeds with steps towards leadership succession. on the contrary, it appears the border crackdown aimed at preventing the north koreans from defecting to china has intensified, and the political prisoner camp population has been on the increase. in may of this year, amnesty international released satellite imagery and new testimony shedding light on the horrific conditions of north korea's political prisoner camps. according to the organization, the prisoner population detained at such camps is up to 200,000, and it compares in the latest satellite photographs of satellite imagery from 2001 indicates a considerable increase in the scale of the camps. moving on to the flow of information and getting into north korea, although officially all personal radios must have a fixed dial and be registered with state security offices, programming by stations including voice of america, radio free asia and broadcasters based in south korea may have a listenership of around 40% in

while the frequency of north korea's submarine and semi-submersible exercises increased this year... reports show south korean patrol ships ability to detect them was poor. national defense committee lawmaker shin hak-yong said on monday, that north korea conducted submarine exercises twice from january to august 2008, and held drills five times during the same period in 2009. however in 2010, that number rose to 28... and this year it has soared to 50. the drills were most highly concentrated between june and august in the west sea... and the number of drills conducted more than doubled compared to the same period last year. moreover this month is the start of the crab fishing season, when north korean and chinese fishing boats frequently appear near the northern limit line... which opens up room for scuffles as north korean ships try to chase chinese boats away. meanwhile, shin claims the south korean navy's vessels that are supposed to detect and destroy these north korean submarines are old and outdated. he said the reports from 2010 and 2011 show certain south korean patrol ship

hills of north bay.erstorms are possible from monterey points south looking at a very active pattern this morning. we'll show you that in just a moment. this system will continue the threat throughout the weekend but cooler air is on the way tomorrow as the stronger onshore push heads our way. dry lightning the wet thunderstorms throughout the sierra nevada and into the north bay right through 11:00. gusty offshore winds, still the possibility and down by monterey we are looking at still very inclement weather. take a look at the area of low pressure. you can see rotation. subtropical moisture is flowing north and with that lift provided by the low we're talking big thunderstorms from los angeles, orange county, notice around santa ana the reds bakesersfield all the way up to san luis obispo, some light rain. further south you go, better chance of showers and thunderstorms but with the clouds on this radar you notice this is keeping the atmosphere pretty stable up by the central and bay area. the thunder

they're reportedly saying that they saw no future in the north. on wednesday, the justice ministry allowed the detectors to land in japan on a provincial basis. they're questioning the group of nine north koreans including three boys to determine how they defected. the refugees said they had heard that a higher standard of living and more freedoms available in south korea and other countries. the group leader says he is a fisherman who worked to procure funds for the military. they say they have more money than farmers in north korea who suffer tremendous hardship. the nine refugees were relatively well dressed and immigration officials believe they wish to flee north korea to seek a better life abroad. meanwhile, nhk has learned that south korea's ready to accept the nine north korean defectors. government sources say that under humanitarian conditions japanese authorities have begun unofficially talked with south korea. the south korean government apparently conveyed the readiness of humanitarian grounds. >>> japanese prime minister yoshihiko no
