friday in pyongyang, north korea. wherever you're watching from around the world, thank very much for joining us. up first a crippling cyber terror attack about to be officially blamed on north korea. an announcement expected as early as today by the obama administration. u.s. officials believe the north korean leadership directly ordered the attack on sony pictures and the fallout from the attack keeps on growing. sony is being criticized by some for canceling the christmas day release of the movie at the center of the controversy. the movie titled "the interview" angered north korea because it depicts a plot to assassinate the north korean leader, kim jong-un. pamela brown is joining us now. what have you learned about the u.s. linking the attack directly to north korea? because as you know, the north korean government has flatly denied it was responsible and praised all the criticism of the film, but it doesn't -- it insists it had nothing to do with the hacking? >> you're right. the north korean government has den

north koreans talk about race. they say they are the purest race, and this is very important for them. they understand our race relations to a greater extent than we think they do. as i said i'm not surprised that they were able to take the most inflammatory portions of the e-mail and release that. they are very good at this. remember, propaganda is really been the forte of the kim family. from 1948 since the founding of the north korean state. >> are we limited because we know so little about them, because dennis rodman is the only american we can rely on for insights about this guy? >> i don't think we're limited. i think there are a number of things we can do beyond a cyber attack. we know that the north korean regime depends on flows of money. if we cut them off we've seen what happens. in 2005 when the bush administration put financial sanctions in place it affected the regime. there are things. we are not without tools in this area. and especially with regard to the sale of ballistic missiles, nuclear weapons

>> naming and shaming north korea. it's a step that you have all the evidence now but haven't taken the step of publicly calling them out. it's something that took them years to do, frankly, john, with china with cyber attacks on u.s. companies in the government. multiple times for years and took them a number of years before publicly called them out. that's a first step. if they're able to determine who the actual hackers are by name and id, they could take a step again they took against an elite group of chinese hackers of filing charges against them. you're not going to take them into court, they're on the other side of the ocean but you could file charges publicly. but in the near term, raise the economic costs for north korea, tighten economic sanctions on the country. i'll tell you the most powerful one they could do is go after their access to dollar-denominated trade. this is north korea's lifeline to the outside world and by squeezing chinese banks that do business with north korea, you could exact an economic

the united states and north korea continue to intensify.or that, we turn to cathy moon, senior fellow at the brookings institution for east asia policy studies. how sophisticated is north korea's internet infrastructure and what is their ability to create hackers? >> the north koreans have quite a sophisticated infrastructure in terms of human resources, human skills as well as the technological know-how. they have a large number amounting to about 5,000 to 6,000 people who are trained in cyber technology, especially in attacks and other kinds of psychological operations. the best of them are sent to russia and china to be trained in advanced work, and so, they do have the capacity. the question is whether they have the kind of reach and sophistication that was able to bring down a system as large as the sony attack, which took 100 terrabytes 6 information out of the sony system and into the public. >> now, if the obama administration is looking at a range of options for going after those five or 6,000 who might have the know-how and the sk

in north korean studies and not the only south korean with a ph.d. on north korea. so they put in their time. he mentioned the expression inadequate pundit which is kind of funny at the risk of being one myself on this panel. it struck me as very eye-opening the last round of nuclear tests which were the first under kim jong-un, suddenly there were 50 more north korean experts being advertised by their universities, media departments than i ever remember in the circle of people i ever quoted in 15 years. you know, these people were accredited academics but when you look at their actual north korea it was maybe one was a part time diplomat at the cato organization for a while and then he kind of turned that into something. some of them were more insightful. these were people i never heard of and expounding on north korea. we don't rely heavily on those folks by any means. >> here's a question about credibility. how do you verify the credibility of sources and like in this case with john and, you know, recently we've had the reports of -- the reports of kim jong-un ha

they attributed to north korea.s that the most accurate way to determine the origins of a hack? >> well, i think it's the most direct way to determine those oogenies but i believe there are other attributes of that attack that they can assign to attribution. ip addresses is the simplest way, but there will be other factors tha and significantels that the fbi intelligence can determine attribution. >> how could north korea pull off such a sophisticated cyberattack? >> well, i think--i don't know the details of the intelligence findings, but we presume that it's been coming from north korea physically. they may have used a proxy. they could have conducted the attack elsewhere. i don't know all the details of what's been discovered through the forensics investigation. i think we have to understand that. we might assign attribution to north korea. there might be other intelligence sources that lead us to that conclusion. the attack itself may have come from some place elsewhere internet access is widely available. there

right at north korea. the u.s. government is expected to publicly blame the regime as early as today. the big question is what will the u.s. do about it? because so far the silence has been deafening. >> cnn learning that investigators have evidence that hackers stole the credentials of a system administrator getting access to the studio's computer system. meaning it was not an inside job. the losses for sony go far beyond canceling the release of the controversial film. it could be the costliest cyberattack against a company in u.s. history. let's begin with senior washington correspondent joe johns what do we know? >> the white house and the u.s. is waiting for investigators at the fbi and the justice department to wrap up their investigation as the administration tries to deal with the fallout. from sony's decision to essentially pull the film. >> the obama administration is ready to point the finger at north korea for the unprecedented sony hack. a move that could come as early as this morning. >> we're conside

it does not say what those will be. >> exactly how do they know for sure that north korea, the north korean government is behind this attack? >> if you look at the statement, they are not the specific. they say they recognize malware here being consistent with malware used by other north korean actors in the past. infrastructure that was used, ip addresses, malicious cyber of aity, other aspects technical nature they say lead them to conclude that north korea was involved. it is pretty clear that there may be other sources of information they have out there that point to north korea. more intelligence allowing them to make this definitive statement that north korea is to blame. we have a statement from the department of, security. jeh johnson saying the cyber attacks against sony pictures was not just an attack against the company and its employees it was an attack on our freedom of expression and way of life. what do you make of the fact that the u.s. fbi is making a statement on this and they are officially linking this back to north korea? >> north korea left enough breadcrumbs to
