staff attended several meetings in north beach and the fillmore. nicholas attended the north beach meeting. last wednesday, july 20. i attended a meeting july 21. my meeting was regarding outdoor events in the fillmore, hosted by the fillmore and the lower fillmore. there was a discussion about juneteenth that had problems regarding security. the -- it was an interesting discussion. they are eager to learn about how the city would like them to manage those outdoor events. do you want to chime in briefly? the would-be hopeful. >>-- that would be helpful. >> one is his meeting at the station open to the public and the other is the advisory board residents and merchants to meet, there is also a monthly meeting. i hope more captains decide to do that because i thought it was useful. there were -- was a lot of questions about how the city works and how the process works for permitting, how to file complaints that will have action come out of them. and general education about how -- if it is at the beginning stages of permitting. it was -- there was a re

i have been a north beach resident for 20 years. i love my neighborhood. i love the vibrant nightlife that we have during the entire day on any day you can go out and have access to entertainment and beautiful cafes. it is part of the charm of the neighborhood. however, another part of the charm -- a significant part of the charm -- is the fact that north beach, even though it is a densely populated neighborhood, it is a mix of residential and commercial -- commercial residents. most of the street fronts are occupied by commercial, and above that floor are all occupied by residential. applying a city-wide process to a neighborhood that has a specific character and composition, to me, is unfair and not well thought through. we are blessed in san francisco to have many such neighborhoods, and i do not see the logic behind applying something that applies city-wide to all of these specific neighborhoods. i would like to request that you take the residents of north beach into consideration and the fact that how this decision will greatly impact the quality of l

we had cases in north beach and had to remove them and could be advertising cell phone companies and had the banners and that could be considered a general advertising sign depending how much they have and we have to look at that and the zoning and whether it's allowed. >> but that seems to add to the character of the neighborhood? what do you think? is it part of the character? >> yeah, i think about that a little bit, and it is like art to the degree that it asks you to think what the city values and there was a time when the city really valued entrepreneurial energy and with these type of stores and immigrant entrepreneurial energy and you come to the new world, and going to make a go of it, and you're going to do everything you can to make your business work. there is a lovely graphic artist cater and i think some of his work is in u.s. weekly and he has a series about a real estate photographer and this character wanders through the city that is kind of like new york and not and a really important part of the city and how it speaks through ingenuity and a will to make a go of it

the weather channel's jeff moros is in atlantic beach, north carolina. it looks windy. i can see the waves behind you. >> reporter: this is one of those days. there has been some dang here in atlantic beach. this is the crystal coast. i don't know if my camera man can pan over there and she it to you. part of the pier has been taken off about the last 30 years or so have been sheered off overnight. looking at it from my perspective there's probably more in danger of coming down as well. we have had tremendous amounts of beach erosion here. i can't even see more than about 50 yards out in the water because of so much spray and rain in the air. the surf has been trem all night. the center of this hurricane is just now passing to our east. we're starting to see the binds switch around more toward the west. that's an indication that the center is passing us by. we're catching the worst of it right now. it should start to improve here as we head on through late today and tomorrow will be a much better day while you guys are catching the brunt of it. a nasty tay to to say the

- in fact, in the month of september, there will be sunday streets in san francisco's chinatown north beach. through the great work of our program and rose and the chinese chamber, part of the sunday street on september 18 will be a dedication to a citywide ping- pong tournament that each district of our city will field a team of people to play, and we will pick up in an alleyway in chinatown. there will be 11 ping pong tables, and we will determine the best ping-pong player from the city and county of san francisco. how about that in september? i'm in north beach which is of course filled with cafes and restaurants that could benefit under this new plan, bringing patrons not only great food but also live music. ♪ the cost for an entertainment permit is $2,000 making it out of reach for most places except entertainment venues which have a choice of the cream of the crop. but now under legislation proposed by supervisor a so-called limited live performance permit would cost $385. the san francisco board of supervisors gave unanimous initial approval for this permit geared mostly toward cafes and restaurants. this morning we did catch up with one musician heading to bars to play for commuters there. he was surprised by the change and says it's a step in the right direction. >> competition on the b.a.r.t. is fierce. musicians want to play, they want to play for people. it's like one of the last venues. there's a lot of street musicians in town. there are a lot of guys, quality musicians, that can't get in doors to play because they haven't been around long enough. >> reporter: it's estimated 700 cafes and restaurants could take

the planning team oversaw the completion of the north beach library and secured prop 84 grants. bonn programs are under way. last is our commitment to our own administrative deficiencies. as we reported previously, our staff has achieved a $370,000 reduction in workers' comp savings in the last 12 months. we did a very detailed custodian service analysis. custodians were reallocated to better meet needs. we are just beginning a reorganization of our aquatics program that will ensure more and better service to the public. it has been a very full fiscal year 2010-2011. we are looking forward to a fabulous 2011-2012. a very big shout out and thank you to the rec and park staff. i can tell you without a doubt that this is the hardest working, most dedicated staff. that concludes the general managers' report. commissioner buell: for being so brief, thank you.
