i retired from the police department after 32 years, 27 years of which are was detailed in north beach. i was recently called in to the mayor's office to assist the city in the planning for america's cup in 2012. i am only telling you this because i am proud of and what i have done. there are many of us. it runs the gamut. there are many very successful people, all products of the boys club and girls club. i think the issue of the new building, which i am very much in support of reminds me, and i hate to date myself, but with the exception of women in law enforcement, and the facilities they ended up working at, the 10 district stations, at the time when women were accepted, it was 1975. as an eye witness, our law enforcement women were relegated to the basement of every station. a janitor closets were now makeshift showers and storage rooms. i know the boys club. the new building was built in 1971 or 1972. with the exception of the girls club, very much the same issues with law-enforcement women. we now have issues with these young women members. their club was the old boys' club, a c

whether it is our friends at north beach or people here in chinatown. in talking with the merchants all over china town, chinese chamber, the stockton street merchants, the chinatown merchants association -- we wanted to capture a little bit more improvement this year on pedestrian safety. there was an idea that was created and talked about for several weeks where it began by a few years ago when i was public works director, that we expanded some of the sidewalks for the benefit of pedestrian safety. we worked very closely with the traffic division of mta. we worked with our health department. we worked with chinatown neighborhood groups and the businesses to expand those sidewalks, and it has actually become quite a positive thing. then, we had sunday streets this past year in the summer where we literally took over grant ave. that became a very positive thing. in fact, we started the first ping-pong tournament in chinatown as a result. more and more, there has been an interest that more of the sidewalks and potentially maybe even a strip of the parkin

i live in north beach. i am a retired city employee. i have been involved in the present -- preservation movement for several years now. i am a third-generation san franciscan, born here. my mother was born here. her parents met here. my father was born in northern california. his grandmother is buried in the mission. i think i have a responsibility to try to keep san francisco the way it is, and i think you people do, too. this is probably the most popular tourist destination in america. there is a reason for that. obviously, people come here because they think they know what to expect. it is important to keep it that way. i am opposed to supervisor wiener's attempt to emasculate the historic preservation commission. there was a good reason for the city to vote for proposition j several years ago. it was resoundingly approved, if you will recall. i think that the historic preservation commission proved itself to be more effective than many expected, and since that occurred, there has been a kind of concerted effort -- shall i say, dest

i don't believe that when the planning department embarked a number of years ago in chinatown, north beach, on their program of the valley, that they necessarily have a project such as this in mind. this is sort of pushing it over the top. i am very impressed with the progress that was made regarding the building, it is coming along beautifully. the way they have been working, i am sure they will continue to push those designs. i have expressed to the museum, i had a problem with the design because when i walked into the building, i had no idea i was in the museum. there is no part in their or no flow in my mind, walking into the building. this creates a ground floor with an absolute flow init also crear where there is art. it creates are in non ticketed public space, which we have not had the four. it does a lot of things in addition true expanding in creating for the city. i only wish sacramento and understood what can happen with redevelopment. does it blow your mind when you think about 1995 and what it is now. it is crews positives. -- is proof positive. >> i think it is a wonderful d
