beach. reporter michelle gile went looking for answers. >> reporter: what's going on? there's an explosion of tiny multicolored shells along the sand at blackie's just north of the newport beach pier. and it's got many people wondering what they are. >> a lot of clams. little shells. >> reporter: indeed they are clams. commonly known as bean clams. because of their size. >> just all the way down the boardwalk. pretty crazy. >> reporter: surf conditions and the low tide are exposing the creatures which spend most of their lives buried in the sand. >> they're pretty what do you think about the shells? >> they are pretty. >> reporter: she doesn't remember ever seeing such a plentiful display of miniature shells on the beach. >> a lot of shells. i don't remember seeing this many shells in several years. >> kind of hard to see now but there's a really neat variety of colors that you get in them. >> reporter: uc-irvine marine biologist has never personally seen so many bean clams in one place. although every 10 years or so he says it happens. >> we have some unusual suffer earlier this week and some erosion happened and it exposed them. if we leave them alone t

north yorkshire. for the last 33 years, ackill beach in western ireland, has looked like this after being washed away.nowowing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sand being dumped back on the coastline,during a freak tide. local people now hope there'll even be a return of hotels, guesthouses and cafes, all forced to shut, after the beach washed away in 1984. keith doyle reports. achill island on the west coast of ireland has many beautiful beaches but for the past 30 years this was not one of them. however, nature has now returned dooagh beach to its former beauty. storms in the 19805 stripped the beach, but over ten days ocean currents have deposited thousands of tonnes of sand to recreate its 300—metre white sandy beach. the most probable reason this beach has reformed is due to two things. it's either a change in sediment supply from further up or down the coast that has brought a fresh amount of sediment to this beach. or it could be due to a change in environmental conditions, either an alteration in the wave climate, or a series of tides that has provided the ideal conditions for this beach to ref
