berkeley. a fire at a well-known restaurant along shattuck avenue on the north side of town. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is live at the scene at chez panisse to tell us the latest. >> reporter: the fire is under control. we know that investigators are currently on scene and they are trying to figure out how this happened. right now firefighters do not have a cause. we do know when berkeley fire first arrived on scene, they say the entire front part of the restaurant was covered in flames. firefighters got the call just after 3:00 this morning. the flames caused the sprinklers to go off and berkeley fire tells me the sprinklers played a key role in keeping this fire at bay. we are told if they had not gone off, the building could have become a complete loss. the public information officer says at this point it appears the fire started from the outside and we asked him if that made it suspicious. but he says at this point, it is too soon to tell. firefighters are trying to assess the damage and save what they can. you may note that this is chez panisse. this restaurant is wel

berkeley. a fire guts part of a well- known restaurant on the north side of town.amage is bad but investigators are not sure of the cause. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is live at the scene. >> reporter: investigators are still here on the scene. they have been here for hours. there will be a lot of work to do. i got an update. it turns out the damage to this restaurant isn't as bad as anticipated. we actually got an up-close look to see how bad it was. take a look. you can see the front part of the restaurant the outside dining area is completely charred but the inside was not affected as much according to firefighters. they got a call around 3:00 this morning. when firefighters got on scene, they say it was just that front part of the building that was covered in flames. the flames caused the sprinklers to go off and berkeley fire says the sprinklers played a key role in keeping this fire at bay. if they had not gone off, the building could have been a complete loss because of the wooden frame and its age. >> it spread up, got through some areas structural openin

uc berkeley police are trying to find her shooter. officer s searched the neighborhood north of lawrence hall of science. they believe that from up there someone shot the girl in her thigh with a 20-inch crossbow arrow as she sat on a life-sized replica of a whale outside the hall of science where she had been attending a school field trip. the ambulance took her to the hospital with the arrow still stuck in her leg so surgeons could remove it. one remarked how brave the girl was in handling the situation. one neighbor who lives above the hall who has reason to believe this may not have been accidental. a few months later she and her daughter discover ed a deer wit an arrow still in it. >> someone who has malicious intent. >> reporter: trying to figure out the exact trajectory of this arrow, leading them to the place where it was shot. >> thank you, bob. >>> we want to get you to the breaking news in san francisco. crews have just put out the flames of an overnight fire that swept through an apartment building. this happened in the bay view, 3rd street and mckinnon. christie
