big developments in north carolina.here we have been covering the most aggressive push against voting rights anywhere in the country in a very long time. all right. the news tonight begins here in the town of boone, north carolina, which is home to appalachian state university. last year in the precincts in and around appalachian state they voted for barack obama 60-35. it was a bright blue part of a very narrowly red county. the republicans in north carolina, the college vote is a nuisance. it is maybe even a problem. and so when north carolina republicans got control this year of all the boards of elections across the state, they used that control immediately to do something about this pesky student voting by trying to make sure there could be less of it. they've not been subtle about this. last month the newly republican board in watauga voted to roll all three of the boone precincts into one superprecinct. north carolina elections guidance say precincts should have something like 1,500 people. the one they made in b

sing what's wrong with north carolina by the public's view? and over the last couple years it has been a very much a politicized and political state. we've seen the voting, the voting rights act down there rolled back by the supreme court and now they are putting in very strict, i think the strictest voter i.d. laws and restrictions down there. then, of course, with abortion, it very much has taken a right turn. i think typically north carolina has been viewed very differently than south carolina. i think that's changing. you see pat mccrory having a republican legislature down there, the legislator is more conservative than he is and he's having battles down there with that republican party that is much more conservative than he is. >> i'm amazed by this. i thought north carolina was on the move here because of the research triangle, unc, nc state and, of course, duke, all that. all the thinks going on down there. all the sort of natural -- nationalization of the state. everybody fwogoes to north caroa to get educated now, go to the beaches.

in north carolina last night in north carolina last night the winston-salem city council voted to changet's local laws to allow guns on winston-salem's city play grounds. they don't want it, but a new state law signed in july by the republican governor in north carolina same day he signed the state's new abortion restrictions, signed another law that day that basically forces every city and town in the state of north carolina to allow guns on their playgrounds, even if they do not want to, even if they do not think it is right for their city or towns. state republicans are forcing them to with this new state law. north carolina is about to enact a new state law basically banning gun buy backs. they'll offer some sort of cash payment or maybe a gift card or a bag of groceries or something as a sort of gun amnesty. so if you have a gun laying around, if there's some gun in your life that for some reason you do not want, at one of these buy backs, you can hand it over to is local authorities. maybe you get something in return, maybe you don't and they just agree to take it no questions aske

most were from the mountain areas of north carolina, virginia, and tennessee. the mountains were filled with prounion people. there was plenty of proconfederate people, but plenty of prounion people because there was not a lot of slavery up there, mostly small farms, family farms, poor farmers eking out a substantive living, couldn't afford slaves, and they were not all that excited about risking lives fighting for a confederacy established by the slave owning, plantation owning rich people from the lowlands who never treated the mountain areas all that well. they met a lot of these disdents from the mountains in the prisons and they formed a secret prounion organization called the heros of america that had something like 10,000 members in north carolina, tennessee, and virginia, mostly in the mountain areas, and they learned all the secret handshakes and secret signs and passwords that the members of of the heros of america used to identify themselves to each other. these were things that came in handy later when they escaped. life in sulsbury was not bad unti

the curriculum is specific to a famous north carolina educator who believed in teaching women. principal there at the female institute. he believed in recitation and contemporary literature too as a way to sharpen young women's minds. so, what you have is this, situation where this -- this very talented slave who had -- acquired enough literary east to have the curiosity, was right there with these texts that were being practiced over and over. and in bleak house which was obviously just a fascinating text to hannah bond the i will have to say one of the things that was eye opening for me was teaching bleak house after teaching a series of slave narratives. after reading hair yet jacobs and take students through bleak house all of a sudden you can see through the eyes of a slave, harry jacobs, if she read it, she would have read it like hannah crafts did and hannah bond did. and voila you, have this amazing alchemy, and just brilliant text. >> henley louis gates told "the new york times" today, about what you have accomplished here with this -- with this proof of authorship. wo

most of them were from the mountain areas of north carolina, virginia and tennessee. the mountains were filled with prounion people. there were plenty of pro-confederate people but there were a lot of prounion people. because there was not a slavery up there. it was mostly small farms, family farms, poor farmers eking out a substance is living. they couldn't afford slaves and they really weren't all that excited about risking their lives fighting for this confederacy that was established by the slave owning, plantation owning rich people from the low lands who had never really treated the mountain areas all that well. so junius and albert met a lot of these dissidents from the mountains in the prison. and, in fact, they were initiated into a secret prounion organization called the heroes of america. would get something like 10,000 members in north carolina, tennessee and virginia, mostly in the mountain areas. and they learn all these secret handshakes and secret signs and passwords that the members of the heroes of america used to identify themselves to each other. t
