so activism continued in north carolina post 1965 and later in the black power. there was activism happening. and cindy smith is of the people can i focus on right so she was from south carolina, a small town, south carolina, piedmont. she came to bennett college as a student after the uprising in greensboro. and so let me go to that. so greensboro uprising happens may of 1969. claude barnes, a student at all black high school, he's radical. he's part of these multiple growing black power movements organizations. he wants to be body president. he was already like junior body president, but he wanted to be senior student body president, the black administration, this allowed him from being a candidate because of his radicalism. the students protested and still voted for him. right. despite it being this allowed. so they protested. use the police because laws and starts attacking harassing both students and teachers. they run to einstein's campus for support at his campus a student organization of black unity kind of being founded one of the key leaders is nelson jo

a man of faith, a man of north carolina.residents, a selfless man of god who lived out his calling by preaching and teaching across the world. always returning to his beloved home in the blue ridge mountains of north carolina for respite. then to return again to his world wide ministry. i will never forget as a child hearing him preach and rally. he brought together people of different faiths and different races. today we acknowledge that he is a better representation of our state than the statue it replaces which brought memories of racism. he realized that he and all of us here together have feet of clay. we are imperfect. we have been found wanting. but he believed, as many of us do, that there is redemption. he dedicated his life to delivering that message. the reverend really graham also recognized the responsibility of public servants such as us and especially that of the president of the united states was so that whoever was in that office deserved a presumption of good faith. the power of prayer. the gift of his wisd

in north carolina i led through the covid crisis. one of the things we had to stop doing was stop relieving -- receiving lab data by fax machine. we have moved past that. there's been a lot of investment. but we have to keep going. we are focused this year on getting more electronic case reporting. this allows for faster identification of those health threats. we can do it. the technology exists. we just need to use it. as far as a.i., we already are thinking about whether the really important use kays for a.i. for public health, think about all the tai ta that's out there and how do you detect signal to noise, how do we use large language models? we're not just looking at e.d. syndromic data, which we have for 90% of the country, which is great, but how do we look at what's happening online, korchtion social media that might identify for us a problem that's happening in a community? lots of opportunity in the future. i'm hopeful for the future but we have to invest. and make sure that we are working together as one team around data.
