he was a very prominent individual not only in the state of north carolina, but also throughout many high ranking circles throughout the southeastern region. not only was he a prominent businessman, he was a co-founder of the north carolina mutual and private association, which is one of the oldest african-american insurance companies in the nation. he's also a very prominent politician. now, he wasn't a politician, but he was a very strong supporter of the republican party in the late 1800's and in the early 1900's, so he had very strong ties to political candidates throughout his life. so he was a very influential individual due to the ties of his father, due to his ties with the duke family out of north carolina, and due to his political ties and his political connections. and all of those residuals of his connections ends up in the long term benefiting his institution, which ultimately would benefit african-americans in the state of north carolina. >> i'm intrigued because you said the republican party, so what does that tell you about the state of the republican party during the
