cnn's martin savidge is in north charleston in front of city hall. tell us more martin. >> reporter: there's a demonstration going on as you so pointed out. it's under the broad banner of black lives matter. there are people here from the local community and elsewhere. there's probably several dozen people. they've been expressing a number of points of view. one of them has been that there should be the stepping down of the mayor of this community. also they pointed out that there is a difference between the racial mix of the police officers which is about 70% white, versus the community which is about 50% african-american. and then on top of that there is just the anger over the shooting itself. here's some of what was said. >> this has been a long standing affair. this has been a long standing occurrence and something that we've had to live with. what you're going to hear is the passion of the people right now. not reacting to a video like you might be reacting to but reacting to a live situation and opportunity to finally share with the world and

there were 50 or 60 of them holding a rally here on the steps of north charleston city hall. gathered a lot of--they really have gotten the word through social media some of them from the charleston area. some of them from the outside who have come in. and you heard that some had very pointed questions for the police chief, but the mayor was very clear. he couldn't answer the questions because of the initial the really main part of the investigation has been handled by sled, as you mentioned the south carolina law enforcement investigation division. there have been other officers who may or may not have been involved. did they witness the shooting? did they come forward with the narrative of what happened? we heard the police chief doctor we heard the mayor say that we only believe slagger was part of the shooting took part in the shooting and was witnessed it. one other thing that we heard from the mayor was that they were moving forward and getting body cameras for all of their officers. that's something that has been talked about for months but has stall: but because of th

north charleston? >> sure. i think the relationship between the community and the north charleston police department has never been stellar, to be honest. i think, you know north charleston is a citye a reputation for being a little heavy handed with their police work and so there's always been some level of distrust. to be honest, you know this obviously sets that relationship back quite a ways. so i think from here you know what i would expect and hope to see is the city of north charleston take some really aggressive actions to make sure that their relationship with the community is better and improved and that there's more community policing as opposed to more heavy handed police work. >> i haven't heard overt calls for the police chief to step down but we have heard calls for the mayor to step down. why is that? >> i can't tell you exactly why that is but i think that some level of you know the buck stops at the top. so i think in cases like this you know people want action and they want results and so one of the things is now that we have the officer in custody and know that he's being tried for murder there's still some feeling in the community that this has to stop. you kn

city. senior national correspondent john roberts joins us live from north charleston south carolina. john? >> good afternoon to you. the protestors will be back here at the north charleston city hall about 12:30 today. protests, demonstrations they had this morning were all very very peaceful calling an end to police action saying there's far too many incidents that go on. when you take a look at the videotape, in this particular case at least they make a salient point. it's about 9:30 saturday morning in north charleston. walter scott is pulled over for a traffic violation. he had a broken taillight. scott apparently tried to flee according to his brother. he had some delinquent child support payments didn't want to go to jail for that after being pulled over for a traffic violation. slager tried to hit him with hiswatch what happened immediately after that. sleger fires eight shots, five of which hit walter scott. he died soon after that. slager was arraigned on murder charges. family of walter scott obviously grieving but according to their attorney, taking some solace in the idea

on wednesday, dozens of people rallied outside of north charleston city hall. the victim, walter scott, had been stopped for having a broken brake light which protesters say was part of a pattern of harassment of african-americans over minor offenses. the officer, michael slager was fired by the police for on wednesday, one day after his indictment for murder. police initially backed his claims that slager feared for his life, but were forced to retract that after a witness came forward with video of the shooting. speaking at city hall, the mayor announced a new order for body cameras. >> we received a grant to purchase 101 body cameras. [applause] >> those body cameras are on order. today, i made an executive decision and have notified my counsel -- we have are to ordered an additional 150 body cameras him as a that every officer that is on the street in uniform will have a body camera. amy: meanwhile, the witness who filmed the video has spoken out for the first time. in an interview with nbc news, feidin santana said he felt a duty to hand the footage over t

i was watching the video you showed of the rally outside city hall in north charleston today. hink it's important for people to understand that lest they think it is limited, the concern, to the black lives matter movement or to protesters in particular cities or locations, i've been talking with people all over this country, young people, faith leaders, church members, some of the most influential business leaders in this country who are african-american, and this issue is number one for everyone. we are in the midst of a national crisis and the crisis is that a significant number of americans are losing or have lost faith in the rule of law and lost faith in our law enforcement system because of what we saw on that horrific video. >> and the differentiator i was talking to jim clyburn about this earlier, is really the video. we've had decades of african-americans believing that they have been treated unfairly in fatal or otherwise incidents with law enforcement. but now there's proof. and that kind of proof could have been what led to the difference in the way the mayor and t

two hours from now we're expected to have a mass demonstration here at north charleston city hall. we've already seen several protesters show up. a press conference for a similar issue related to officer slager's work history. the threat today is people calling for prosecution against this second officer seen in the tape alongside officer slager. officer clarence habersham. national bar association calling for him to be held accountable. they say he did not do enough to help walter scott and may have been complicit in a cover-up when he chose to document in his police report the version of events officer slager wrote on his police report. so far, no formal charges have been filed. we've reached out to to clarence habersham and his attorney. we have yet to hear back. this community very much still grieving and upset even more than a week later after 50-year-old walter scott was shot five times. >> nick thank you very much. paul ginsburg forensic audio expert who's worked with the fbi, cia, dea, homeland security with me now. he's listened closely to that first piece of audio, and i'
