that it used to be north dakota and south dakota and mississippi. it's the senate in arkansas, in wyoming, larger number of states. and as we have states with just one clinic, these outside groups that want to abolish access to abortion, even if they can't abolish the right on paper, put a target on all of these states to try to pressure those individual clinics out of business. that makes your status in north dakota not just a north dakota story, but a story of national importance. and people who see it that way, how do they -- how do they make this a national issue? i mean, the other side has made this a national issue. but is support for you a national issue too? can it be expressed in a way that is helpful the you? >> absolutely. and i think ever since the north dakota legislature has started down this path, our clinic has gotten e-mails, phone calls, letters from all over. we've gotten support from all over. i think the rallies all across the state today have shown that we have support in state and out of state. and i think that when you are a

this was yesterday in minot, north dakota. in minot, north dakota, they weren't alone.ters came out all over north dakota, in minot, in bismarck and fargo, urging the governor to veto anti-abortion bills that passed through the legislature and landed on his desk yesterday. the bills included a ban on abortion at six weeks of pregnant which amounts essentially to a total ban, since that is before many women even know they are pregnant. a mississippi trap law that consists of targeted regulations to shut down one remaining abortion clinic in the state. today when news hit the governor of north dakota jack dell rim pell signed those bills, they say the lone clinic in north dakota got a flood of unsolicited donations. they posted this on the website. in big bold letters. abortion is still legal in the state of north dakota, despite the signing of some bills today by the governor. red river women's clinic is open, available for appointments and legally performing abortions in the state of north dakota. the director of the last clinic spoke with us on last night's show, givin

north dakota actually has seen significant economic growth over the last few years.s to a booming energy industry north dakota has the lowest unemployment rate in the entire country, 3.3%. the energy boom has brought north dakota more jobs, more wealth and more development. but the one thing it hasn't brought is more women. a recent photo essay "new york times" in the sunday magazine made the point painfully clear. in one picture, you can see plenty of guys milling around a singles bar on the weekend. but you sure won't and don't see plenty of women. in fact, the male to female ratio at that bar was reported to be 5 to 1. yet north dakota just passed and the governor just signed one of the worst, if not the worst, bills restricting women's access to health care services in american history. the bill would force the red river women's clinic, which is the only facility in north dakota that provides women access to the legal procedure of abortion, in addition to other health services, to close its doors. in fact, the legislation is so extreme, a number of republican sta

why is this happening in north dakota now? >> i think we're a very conservative state. low-population state. i have 13,000 constituents. it's a little easier here and i think that's part of the reason and we are conservative there's no doubt about that. >> michael: that's an interesting answer and one i never think about when wondering why these things happen in states like kansas and north dakota, aside from the conservatism is the low number of constituents per legislator and that's unusual, and certainly facilitates that happening. pro life republican curtis olafson blocked the state-wide abortion ban in north dakota because he didn't think it could withstand the constitutional challenge. and then he lost his seat and they said, quote . . . like curtis olafson you are opposing anti-abortion legislation. could this be dangerous for you politically? >> i'm not worried about it politically, what i am saying i believe is what a number of my constituents believe. that's certainly the world i am getting. is that it is a personal choice. whether you believe you are pro life

constitution, and he basically just set north dakota tax payers up for a long, lengthy battle over thisi don't think this is what every day north dakotans want from our state. >> the senate for reproductive rights says it will challenge the bill on the clinic's behalf. you said the bill is not the one that will end abortion, so why -- are you anticipating a massive legal fight in the days ahead? >> you know, we are already in a legal battle with the state of north dakota from legislation they passed in 2011. we go to court in april on restrictions for medication abortion again with the help for the center from reproduction rights. the center vowed to fight the heartbeat bill. but it's duplicate of what's happening in mississippi where doctors are required to have admitting privileges at a local hospital. there's only two hospitals here, and one has requirements that doctors will not be able to meet. we're up for the challenge. we have had donations rolling in. people walking in the door, people calling, sending donations in. it's been a flood this morning. so we're ready for the battle.

we have the bell like north dakota.er states that require doctors to have privileges, which depending where you live can be hard to obtain. hospitals don't want to get into the political side of whether abortion is obtainable in the state. mississippi passed last year and it's really challenging, getting challenged in court in mississippi is another one for there is one abortion clinic laughed. they may have to shut down. another pop the other while we've seen is to require abortion in ambulatory surgery centers and those are certain hallway requiring a certain requirement that sinks in closets and stuff like that. michigan passed a law last year and that is going to be very expensive for providers to conform to and therefore put them out of business that way. >> host: was go to the phone. hi, mark. >> caller: yeah, i just wanted to say that i'm only saying that republicans had the double standard about a bigger government, beget they want to take up women's race to have control of the body and just getting really frust

the north dakota clinic is still open. for those women that that is their option, it's not up common in states that are geographically large and where the providers are few and far between to have to drive up to ten hours one way to get an abortion. and when you consider that most of these states, there are also waiting periods in effect, so you're doing that ten-hour drive four times over the course of several days. cost wise, a first trimester abortion which is up to the 12th week of pregnancy generally runs between about $350 and $500. some, most private insurance companies still cover that, although not a lot of women use insurance. after the 12th week, the price can go up very quickly because the procedure is still very safe into the second and third trimesters, but it's a more involved procedure the later the pregnancy goes. so one of the women that i interviewed for my book, she had to have an abortion done at the 32nd week of pregnancy because of fetal anomalies. she had to fly from the east coast to colorado to ha

some in the northeast states represents a more serious challenge in terms of health than the north dakota. one of the reasons i am encouraged about possibility of common ground is that at our first hearing there was a fascinating back and forth senator hoven of north dakota and -- they talked exactly what you're talking about. there could be an opportunity for gabriel activist role for the state -- for a real activist role for the state. you could have a federal minimum standard and youc ould have a great deal of disclosure. i think if you look at the back and forth in that first hearing, walkednly they didn't out there in "we agree on the following steps," i think there is some opportunity for common ground. march 7th.e that's what are the first two or three questions you're going to ask at that hearing? >> let me tell you, i think she is inspired choice. you get people who have been around the beltway. i respect that. it comes either from an agency or a think tank. if you do not get the kind of expertise and fresh approach that i think we are going to get from sally. if you look at her
