where i am from originally in south dakota and communities where i work in north dakota are rural and particularly tribal populations. rural populations i work with that are underserved, we tend to have less access to health care and less easy access to healthy food. in kyle, south dakota, if we want to purchase healthy food, it costs more than what you would spend in a city or suburb, because it is perishable and costs money to bring food out to rural communities. in public health we call that a property tax, not a tax where money is collected by a government, but people have to pay more money for healthier options when they live in rural and underserved populations. it also links to the need for health education. one challenges i had seen when i was a full-time clinician and certified diabetes educator was that all the education and theory is not of value if we can't implement it, if people don't have access to things we are recommended. -- are recommending. then we are not going to improve outcomes for diseases like diabetes. when i look at the groups i work with, there are so many
