north korea. this past august, as the lead democrat on the east asia subcommittee, i led a congressional delegation up to korea, to china, and to japan. i asked senator chris van hollen of maryland, senator jeff merkley of oregon, and congresswoman ian wagner from missouri to accompany me on my trip. and we went and met with president moon. we traveled to the border of china in north korea as the first-ever u.s. delegation to visit the major point of commerce between north korea and china so that we could discuss and witness oil tanks going across the bridge from china into north korea. that is just last august. we met with our generals, we met with our admirals working in the region, and with our diplomats. and then last october, i met with president trump in the white house before his trip to south korea to underscore the importance of strengthening economic sanctions and engaging in dialogue. i told him that there is only a diplomatic resolution to this issue, there is no military resolution of this issue, which would not turn catastrophic very quickly. and i also told him that talks in and of t

north—east of china, they have been put on hold and america's number two automotive company linking it to pressure from the authorities ahead of the talks. thank you. and let's cross over now to our asiain singapore, who has the latest on the chinese smartphone giant xiaomi filing plans for a highly—anticipated initial public offering in hong kong. as you said, xiaomi, one of the world's biggest smartphone makers, even known as the apple of china, it is expected to raise a massive listing. it should be at least $10 billion, analysts are saying. if it does raise that much, it would be the largest ipo since 2014 and in fa ct the largest ipo since 2014 and in fact that was another chinese company. if the share sale does make that much, it would put the company value at $100 billion. what else do we know about xiaomi? it is big in china but it is also a major player in india where it has been battling it out with samsung to be the most popular handset maker. but besides smartphones, it also makes home appliances like air purifiers and rice cookers. it offers intimate services. it has even set up apps offering music and entertainment, like its chinese rival. so there is a lot of buzz and e

east asia policy and u.s./korean relations. should this development surprise anyone? i mean there is this pattern of north korea's erratic behavior. so inspite of everything else, is this just business as usual for kim jong-un? >> no. i don't think it is. and i don't think this is erratic behavior on north korea's part. first of all, donald trump is the one who had been tweeting, many, many times, for weeks now, even before he agreed to a summit, that a summit may never happen. and then after he agreed to a summit, he still tweeted it may never happen. or that if he doesn't like it, he will walk out. i think he set the united states up for a potential retaliation and this is -- this is a retaliation in words. why are the north koreans doing this? first of all, the join military exercises between south korea and the united states, these are held annually. and so there is no surprise there. however, this time around, there are eight f-22 stealth fighters for the first time being deployed and joining in the air -- the show of power in the air along with b-52 bombers. even the south korean government's news s
