photographer, jeff burton, who's been driving up north highway 515 in pickens county, that also was in north georgia snowplows and brine trucks have done a good job keeping the interstates and major highways open even during the overnight. as you head further north snow conditions thickened. some secondary roads were deemed impassable overnight. meanwhile, in carolinas more than 200,000 customers lost electricity. georgia power reporting less than 2500 customers affected, mostly in the northeastern corner of the state. air traffic has returned to normal at atlanta's hartsfield-jackson international airport. now, the snow that you see here that blanketed much of north georgia overnight, it stopped just short of the atlanta city limits and that is good news because that prevented major gridlock on atlanta roadways. however, the atlanta public schools canceled classes today out of an abundance of caution and many atlanta employers have allowed their workers to come in either late or to stay home, and that's kept a lot of extra cars off the road especially during the normally busy morning rush hour traf

we'll get kind of a brush of this storm, but it is hammering north georgia, northern sections of alabama back into mississippi and now across into tennessee. the smokies will get a foot of snow easy. critical time 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. and the roads become slick very quickly, much like saturday, same deal tomorrow morning. futurecast 6 a.m., there's the snow. you can see the darker blue. that's moderate snow across la plata and back to fredericksburg down into the northern neck, pretty decent snow now everywhere across the metro area. by 8:00 on the futurecast temperatures low to mid-20s. it's going to be another dry snow. by 10:00 the snow begins to end from west to east, but still some accumulating snow along the i-95 corridor. by 12:30, 1:00 snow moves across the bay, temperatures remain in the 20s, a couple peeks of sun possible tomorrow. the mountain showers tomorrow. you folks pick up your snow on friday. martinsburg and winchester won't get that much snow with this system. tonight mostly cloudy, cold with snow by dawn, heaviest to the south, low temperatures in the 20s, yellow alerts.

we could see a wintry mix even snow as we go through mississippi, alabama, even into north georgia bytiming this out, it will all end for texas and louisiana as we go through the overnight hours. then we will see it pop up again as we go through northern alabama, north georgia by tomorrow morning and pushing offshore. even south carolina possibly getting freezing rain by tomorrow around midday. here is the next system already making its way through wednesday morning commute. we could see more snow and ice in dallas texas, all of east texas and then southern arkansas and then wednesday afternoon, pushing into mississippi, alabama, even into north georgia. atlanta forecasting snow and possible winter mix wednesday. pushing out into the carolinas, virginia d.c. getting snow thursday afternoon. temperatures are also going to stay well below normal. we have 30 and 40 degree below average temperatures expected for tonight into tomorrow morning. 20 to 30 degree below average temperatures as you head into the midwest. the south and the deep freeze could get another round of this winter weathe

stand by, because i want to can him about the emergency decoration coming from north georgia, but let'sill ripley literally in the car on the road headed to boston from new hampshire. how are the roads right now? >> reporter: you know i have to say, poppy, the road conditions have been pretty good and in large part because of what you see right in front of us. snowplows like this. we have seen a whole steady stream of these snowplows out on the roads both on i-95 north and southbound and also on the side streets, as well. they have the plow down and they have the sparks on the pavement which means they're not pushing a whole lot of snow. we know the blizzard has long since passed but they're out here because they want to make sure that there's not any snow blowing on to the roads and they're also monitoring for the dangerous black ice that we've been talking about, the black ice that can take drivers by surprise especially as they get over confident and start thinking that because there's no longer white stuff, snow on the road that they can go fast again only to hit a patch and find th

this next storm will bring freezing rain across north georgia, tom. >> rob, where exactly is that storm headed? >> reporter: stretching out tonight, st. louis will get a fair amount of snow. it will pour across ohio, pennsylvania and into the northeast. and the rain-snow line is near the new york city area. generally speaking 3 to 5 inches in spots. higher amounts especially western pennsylvania looking at 5 to 8 inches. i mentioned this stretches out back to california as well. that's where the base of the storm is. southern california into arizona. moisture rotates in. there's heavy rain potentially into the phoenix area. there are flood watches out there. beneficial rains from california but the bulk of the moisture will be into phoenix. >>> a massive storm. all right, rob, thank you. and this nasty wintry mix of snow and ice triggering travel trouble both on the ground and in the sky. across the country, check this out, nearly 3300 flights were either delayed or canceled. almost a dozen of those at dallas ft. worth alone nine-hour delay for some american airlines passengers. here's

we're looking at places from north georgia to north carolina widespread black ice is what we'll haver. you have high-pressure, that is a clockwise flow. on the eastern side you get that flow from the north that is still keeping about half of the country 10 to 30 degrees below average. so it's a few more days of these cold temperatures. if there's any sort of melting to refreeze overnight, it will be a problem. the temperatures i was mentioning, atlanta still only at 46 and minneapolis a high of 8. that's a lot of cold air as far south as houston. dallas could be in the 30s tomorrow. that's important because that means this next round of moisture, even though it is not a lot, could be snow instead of rain. in fact that looks very likely. and maybe a little freezing drizzle on the light side of that that moves into saturday night. so it's not overyet. >> i love seeing 87 in miami. that was really nice. nicole thank you. >>> it seems like it's the right thing to do when temperatures plummet, good samaritans try to help the homeless. but all across the country people are being asked not

look at the roads in north georgia. causing treacherous drivewaying down south. leaders asking people to stay off the roads. >> at least 25 people have died because of the extreme cold across the country. the record breaking cold will last through most of next week and we are keeping an eye on the snow and rain through parts of the midwest. as far south as alabama. more than 100 roofs collapsed in massachusetts like this one in westford. several horses had to be rescued here. a pair of dogs pulled from a frozen marsh. coast guard cutters are making their way through the river so commercial ships can travel. it's a danger to the citrus crops in florida. >> could you be safer when it's cold outside? crime goes down when it's cold and picks up as the temperature picks up. since winter began, crimes have plunged in boston and memphis. new york had a 12-day stretch without a murder. that was the longest span since the city began tracking that data in 1994. this shows a frozen jeep imprint. the woman snapped a picture when she couldn't believe her eyes. she sent it to

the drive home is going to be very rough for portions of southern arkansas and even north georgia getting in on the action tomorrow afternoon beginning and it will taper off by the time we get to thursday morning it will push off the north carolina coast. by thursday around lunchtime. snow accumulation. we're expecting more snow than ice with this system which is the better news. a lot of these areas in south don't have the proper equipment to get the snow off the road. we're expecting more trouble. dallas could see an inch or two. as we head into the east we could see six to eight inches of snow in the georgia mountains. even forecasting one to three inches of snow in downtown atlanta, the metro area and we could see quite a bit around coastal north carolina even up towards norfolk. the cold air is not going anywhere any time soon. we'll continue to see bitter cold across much of the country. that does include the north, northeast getting a break. temperatures are still awfully cold. we'll be at 32 in boston tomorrow. new york city even in the 20s thursday and friday. >> terrible news be

but this one story about a man who was born and group in a mining town in north georgia. we moved around looking for work in alabama, tennessee, went to arkansas and couldn't make it and came back ending up in central north carolina where he took a job in 1859 digging ditches for a local landowner. they got into a dispute about his wage. he murdered the man and was eventually executed by the state of north carolina. but before he did, his defense attorney, the man assigned to be his defense attorney who is from here in greensboro took down his life story. so we know details about, for instance, all of the various jobs he did, the fact he was so mobile. a lot of the same things the poor whites did but he is very atypical because he was a murder and not many of the poor whites i talk about are murders. i don't really have those voices or kind of individual personalities that come through the way he does because those documents don't exist for people in this social class. i have a lot of fragments i tried to put together. they filled in as a casual labor force and plugged the
